Tuesdays with Barry – December 12, 2017 |UW Badgers

Hello Wisconsin Wrestling Fans,

It was another successful weekend on the mat. Thursday was our first home dual of the season against Big Ten foe, Maryland. Our guys came out and wrestled hard and finished strong. We were especially pleased to see true freshman, Ethan Rotondo, in his comeback win, he showed us some great things in that match. Patrick Spray stepped in with little notice and competed hard to get his win as well. We have been talking and teaching about finishing strong all season and these two men showed us in competition that they can finish strong. Eli Stickley also showed a strong finish, wrestling all seven minutes to get the upset win against #12 Ryan Diehl. There were some very promising things to take from this dual, but we know we can always get better.

Saturday was a busy day for us, as we split time at a dual against UW-Whitewater and the UNI Open in Cedar Falls, IA. We had a strong showing against UW-Whitewater. We liked what we saw from all ten guys, but were especially pleased with the effort again from Ethan Rotondo to win in overtime; Jared Scharenbrock also had an exciting match to fight off his back and get the reversal and pin Vela. Brady Wetter also stepped in at 197 pounds and scored a big tech fall for the team.

The Badgers also saw many podium finishes at the UNI Open. Cole Martin led the success of the Badgers winning the 141 weight class. Trent Hillger (unattched-Hwt) finished second, Paul Konrath (unattached-133) finished third, Johnny Jimenez (unattached-125) finished fourth and Jake Covaciu (174) finished 5th.

We are now in the last week of class for this semester and finals week begins on Friday. The team will have plenty of time to prepare for their final exams and term papers. We will be doing some more individual work with each athlete to improve skills and prepare for Midlands and the second half of the season.

One note of business I wanted to share with you all, Big Ten tickets are now available through the Michigan State Ticket office. You can order them via www.msuspartans.com and use the promo code WISCONSIN to purchase tickets in the designated Wisconsin section. Or you can call the MSU ticket office at 1-800-GOSTATE. All session tickets are $40/adult and $25/youth

In this holiday season, I want to thank each of you for your continued support of UW Wrestling. We have the best fans in the country. Happy Holidays to you and your family!

Tuesdays with Barry – November 28, 2017

Hello Wisconsin Wrestling Fans,

We hope you enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and friends last week! The team had a few days off to get home or enjoy a short break after a successful weekend in California. We are very happy with the way the team responded both in the duals and at the Road Runner Open tournament. To come away with two dual victories and 5 individual champions in the tournament gives us great momentum leading into our next competition. The guys overall had great intensity all weekend, scored a lot of back points and we were very pleased with the way our guys approached every match all weekend. We feel this has prepared us for the weekend to come.

Next up is the Cliff Keen Invite in Las Vegas, we leave on Thursday and competition starts on Friday. We know this will be stiff competition, but the way the guys have been practicing and the dedication they are showing in and out of the room every day, has us confident they are ready to compete.

Dont forget our first home dual of the season is next Thursday, December 7th at 8pm in the Field House against Maryland. This will be the first wrestling dual of the season on the Big Ten Network and currently our only scheduled TV appearance of the season, so we hope you will come out in person and help make it a great atmosphere for our wrestlers! For this dual only, we do have pre-sale tickets available, be sure to visit UWBadgers.com to secure yours today. Well see you next week!

Hello Wisconsin Wrestling Fans,

We are excited to get back into competition this weekend in Bakersfield, CA. Friday we will be competing in duals against the University of Pittsburgh and Cal State-Bakersfield. On Sunday we will be competing in the Road Runner Open, hosted by Cal State-Bakersfield. The athletes and staff have worked hard since our first competition at the Michigan State Open to make the adjustments needed to set them up for a successful weekend of competition.

This weekend, some of our athletes will be competing unattached at the Lindenwood Open hosted by Lindenwood University in the St. Louis area. We will update you on the results from all of these events next week.

Last Wednesday was the start of the early signing period for our sport, and it was a good one for us. We are very excited to welcome the incoming class of student-athletes for the 2018-19 school year. We feel like each one of these athletes displays the positive characteristics we strive for as Wisconsin Wrestlers and as men. We look forward to helping them reach their goals on and off the mat. For details on this class, please visit HERE.

We also want to take a minute to congratulate incoming student-athlete Tyler Dow who competed in the Stevens Point Open last weekend. Tyler finished 3rd against a strong field of collegiate wrestlers. We want to congratulate Tyler on this accomplishment and we look forward to helping him reach his collegiate wrestling goals when he arrives on campus next fall.

Mark your calendars, our first home dual is less than a month away, Thursday, December 7th at 8pm, live on the Big Ten Network.

Hello Wisconsin Wrestling Fans,

This past weekend was our first official competition of the season. We took 21 athletes attached and 6 of our freshmen competed unattached. We are proud of the way they competed, as always though, there are certain areas we need to work on and improve on for the next competition. If you missed the action, check out the recap HERE

The staff met on Monday to create a plan for each athlete on the skills they need to improve upon, as well as what we, as a team, need to work on to get better. This mornings practice, the athletes came in focused and ready to work on adjustments needed to prepare for our next competition. The guys have also been in with coaches watching video of last weekends matches and watching video of some of our possible opponents in our next match ups. Our next action will be Friday, November 17th against Pittsburgh and CSU Bakersfield in a Tri-Dual and then Sunday, November 19th in the Road Runner Open, hosted by CSU Bakersfield.

This Friday and next Monday, our team will be off campus holding practices at Stoughton High school on Friday, November 10th from 4:00pm-5:30pm and Monday, November 13th at Milton High School at 4:00pm-5:30pm. These are both open practices, so if you are in the area, come out and support the team. After each practice we will have a few minutes to do meet and greets with all of our fans.

This Wednesday is the first day of the early signing period for recruiting. As we get those National Letters of Intent in, we will be communicating our signees out via social media, our website and we will have a link in next weeks Tuesdays with Barry.

Tuesdays with Barry – October 10, 2017

Hello Wisconsin Wrestling Fans,

The time is here, today was the first official practice of the wrestling season!! The guys had a great pre-season leading up to the first workout of the season at 7:45am this morning. We focused on mat skills; top and bottom. We are changing our workout schedule a bit this year. We will practice Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the afternoon and Tuesday and Thursday mornings. This is a great change for the athletes and allows the guys to be a bit more flexible in their academic schedules while allowing them proper recovery time.

IMPORTANT TIME CHANGE!
The intra-squad scrimmage on Thursday, October 26th will start at 7:30pm. Doors open at 7:00pm. Most of the team will be competing in this event. The scrimmage will provide you a glimpse at our true freshmen along with some of our younger guys who will be big time competitors for us this season. We look forward to seeing you there!

Tuesdays with Barry – October 3, 2017

This is the last week of our pre-season training. Next Tuesday is our first official day of in-season workouts. Less than five weeks until our first tournament, the Michigan State Open, November 5th.

So far we as a staff are pleased with the way the freshman are adjusting in and out of the wrestling room. We are also looking forward to them competing in open events this fall and experiencing their first collegiate competitions.

We have several individuals who have changed weight classes this season, some have gone up and others are decided to compete at a lower weight class. You will see these changes and watch them wrestle at their new weight classes at our Intra-Squad scrimmage on October 26th at 7pm in the Field House. Hope to see you there supporting all of our athletes!

Hello Wisconsin Wrestling Fans,

We are already in the fourth week of school.  Time is flying by!  Athletes are adjusting well, especially the freshmen to pre-season workouts.  As I talked about before, we are looking to take some of our workouts off campus to high schools in the state.  We have been contacted by many different coaches, but for the first year, and due to NCAA Compliance time management rules, we are currently planning on staying within a 40-mile radius of campus.  We are hoping in the future to expand that reach to other areas of the state.

We, as a staff, are also discussing the possibility of hosting two high school teams for a dual prior to our competition with Maryland in December.  We are still hammering out some details and working with compliance to make sure we meet all NCAA rules, but watch for information on this in the weeks to come.  We are excited about the prospect of this event.

Hello Wisconsin Wrestling Fans,

Athletes are in the full swing of school and pre-season workouts. They are preparing in the classroom and on the mat every day and we are liking what we are seeing, as a staff, so far. Every athlete is looking to do weight certification within the next two weeks, just another step to the start of our official season. We are getting excited and anxious for it to begin!

We are very excited to let you all know that we as a staff are going to be taking our team off campus to four different sites in the next few months to hold a practice. When those sites are set we will communicate that with all of you. These practices will be open to the public and will give you,our fans, a unique experience to witness how our guys prepare day in and day out for the season. We look forward to seeing many familiar faces during these practices.

Hello Wisconsin Wrestling Supporters!
We are now heading into the second week of school and have started our preseason conditioning and workouts. Per NCAA rules, we are limited in the number of hours we get with the guys until our official season starts, but we are making the most of our time.

This past weekend we had two special guests visit the team. Coach Rob Waller Sr. talked with the guys and provided some great motivation as we start our preseason work. Rob Waller Jr. was also here and provided our guys with great instruction. The Athletes learned a lot from these men and will be able to utilize these skills this season both mentally and physically.

Our intrasquad scrimmage will be held on Thursday, October 26th at 7pm in the Field House. This event is open to the public, come get the first look at our 2017-18 team.

Keep your eyes on our social media platforms and website in the weeks to come. We will have features of each of our new freshman, get to know our new group of Badgers!
