|Alumni, Friends and Family,
The UW Badger season completed this past weekend in Madison Square Garden with some highs and lows. I want to get the lows recognized first. A 23rd place team finish is certainly below what we are capable of. We also expect to get more than one All-American. We will be discussing weights individuals should compete at next year along with the off season plans for each athlete on the team.
There are certainly positives that we can move forward with as everyone that qualified for the NCAA’s is returning next season. This will be led by NCAA runner-up and likely number one ranked 165lb next year in Zeke Jordan. Zeke had an outstanding Championship. He faced likely the number one pound for pound wrestler in college in Derringer from Oklahoma State in the finals. Zeke gave up only 5 takedowns this entire season in earning a 29-1 record. All American Connor Medbery will return from his Olympic redshirt next year as well and will start the season ranked between 2-4 at 285lbs. 2015 All American Ryan Taylor also has a year of eligibility remaining. Expect to see some of the redshirt freshman in the line-up next year as well as some other underclassmen that will be added to the mix.
Big Ten Dominance
The Big Ten again outdistanced the field with 5 Champions, 13 of the 20 finalists and 31 of the 80 All-Americans. The All-American total was nearly that of the next 3 best conferences combined!
Bucks a Point
Thank you to all of you who participated in the Bucks a Point fundraiser in support of the Badger Wrestling Club. It looks like we will exceed our goal of 15K.
Finally-It is with great pride that I announce the birth of my grandson Trent Jake. He was born today weighing in at 7lbs 10oz. He and my daughter, Amanda are doing great. I don’t think I am old enough to be a grandpa, but I will take that title gladly. We are thrilled at his arrival.
Thanks everyone for your support this year. We have a group of young men that I know everyone would be proud of. They will all be ready to get us into the top 10 next year and it is our job to provide them with the training and competition to get the Badger Wrestling program there.
