Updated lineups for USA wrestlers competing in Iran, Finland, Azerbaijan & France this week

Past World champion and four-time World medalist Elena Pirozhkova will be among the top stars competing for the USA on international tours this week.

For much of the wrestling community, Thanksgiving is a time away from the sport to spend with family and friends. However, with less than five months from the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa in April, numerous U.S. wrestlers are overseas in competition during Thanksgiving week to gain valuable international experience.

There have been some lineup changes for these tours since the initial press release published a few weeks ago.

A U.S. men’s freestyle team, led by the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, is already in Iran, for the World Wrestling Clubs Cup in Mazandaran, Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27. Last year, the Titan Mercury WC placed second in the tournament, and will be looking to do even better this year. The top three teams will receive prize money, with $50,000 to champion team, $30,000 to runner-up team and $20,000 to the third-place team.

Top U.S. wrestlers in all three styles will be competing in Baku, Azerbaijan at the UWW Golden Grand Prix Finals. The men’s freestyle competition is set for Friday, November 27. Women’s freestyle will be held Saturday, November 28. The competition concludes on Sunday, November 29 with Greco-Roman. Prize money includes $10,000 to champions, $5,000 to silver medalists and $2,000 for bronze medalists. The U.S. Greco-Roman team has been training for over a week in Azerbaijan in preparation for this tournament.

A group of 15 U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers will compete on Saturday, November 28 at the Arvo Haavisto Cup in Ilmajoki, Finland. These athletes also competed this past Saturday at the Vantaa Cup in Vantaa, Finland, where the USA won six individual medals.

There will be U.S. men and women freestyle wrestlers entered in the 41st annual Henri Deglane Challenge in Nice, France. On Friday, November 27, there will be three men’s weights (65 kg, 86 kg, 125 kg) and three women’s weights (53 kg, 63 kg, 75 kg). On Saturday, November 28, the weights being contested are men’s freestyle (57 kg, 74 kg, 97 kg) and women’s freestyle (48 kg, 58 kg, 69 kg).

In all, there will be 47 U.S. wrestlers on the mats this coming week, including numerous past World Team members.
