Hometown Hero Ep. 2 | Jared Scharenbrock

by Abigail Ruckdashel

In this week’s episode of Hometown Heroes, we catch up with Red Shirt Junior, Jared Scharenbrock. The two-time State Champion from Sun Prairie finished his high school career with a record of 191-2, going undefeated in his final two seasons and finishing on a 97-match win streak. Along with his two state titles, Jared also had a runner-up finish as a sophomore.

So far, this season, Jared is 7-3 at 157 lbs. for the Badgers; tallying one pin and one tech fall. Last season he finished 8-9, wrestling in the prestigious Cliff Keen Open finishing 2-2 and the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships where he finished 4-2, narrowly missing the podium.

Most recently, Scharenbrock has become a part of a legacy. His younger brother Drew officially signed with the Badgers and is part of this year’s recruiting class. They will both be on the team for Jared’s final season next year.

WWO: Did you have dreams of being a Badger growing up just outside of Madison?

JS: Uh yeah. I mean I don’t know. I don’t know how to answer that question besides yes.

WWO: Being a two-time state champion I’m sure you have lots of memories, but what is your top memory from high school?

JS: My top high school memory is from sectionals my senior year. Our 113-pounder qualified for state, so the four seniors all made it. It was pretty special. We all made it there together.

WWO: And what about college? What is your favorite memory so far being a Badger?

JS: That’s a tough one actually. There’s no individual memory I can think of, but every single dual cheering as a team and coming together to rally, that’s what is fun. That’s what I enjoy about it.

WWO: And now that your brother is recruited and you’ve created a small legacy, what does that mean to you?

JS: It means a lot. He’s my family and now he’s a part of the Badger family too. I think I’ll be able to help him a little bit his first year. I don’t know, but it will be fun because we haven’t been teammates since we were in youth wrestling together. It will feel a little different, but I’m looking forward to that. It will definitely be good.

WWO: Were you pulling on his arm a little bit to make the decision to be a Badger?

JS: No, I wasn’t. I was letting him make his own decision. He decided this was the place for him, and that’s the reason why he’s here.

You’re going to want to keep an eye on the Scharenbrock brothers, as big things are coming. Check back next week to hear from more of our homegrown badger state talent.
