Teams: Concordia Wisconsin, Elmhurst, Harper (Ill.), Lakeland, Loras, MSOE, North Central, Triton (Ill.), Chicago, Dubuque, UW-LaCrosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Parkside, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Whitewater, Wabash, Wartburg and Wheaton.

As one of the premier early season tournaments in the NCAA Division III, the 25th CUW Wrestling Open will again prove to be a strong test for the first month of the season.

Wartburg, the defending NCAA III National champions and currently ranked No. 1 in the latest NWCA Division III poll, returns a veteran lineup with a celebrated recruiting class. The Knights will be led by a strong group of ranked wrestlers including Cross Cannone (No. 1 at 149), Kyle Fank (No. 2 at 197) and Lance Evans (No. 2 at 285). Seniors Logan Thomson (157) and Tyler Lutes (184) each won their weight classes at the Luther Open last weekend, and Wartburg won their season opener 54-0 over Nebraska Wesleyan on November 4.

NCAA Division III Loras, who is ranked third in the nation, started with five champions at the Super 8 Invite at UW-Platteville on November 4. Leading the Duhawks were individual winners Kevin Kelly (141), second-ranked Jimmy Davis (157), Eddie Smith (165), No. 1 Guy Patron, Jr. (197), and eighth-ranked Quin Gilliam (285). Loras also won their season opener with a 38-8 rout of No. 9 UW-Platteville.

No. 5 Wabash, who will bring their normal 30-plus wrestlers, opened on November 4 by winning the Adrian Invitational with six champions out of the 10 weight classes. Kaleb Guzior (125), Jared Timberman (149), Kyle Hatch (157), fourth-ranked Darden Schurg (174), Hunter Bates (184) and Kyle Shaffer (197) each won for the Little Giants. Wabash followed up with a 33-5 win over Manchester on November 10. Other Wabash ranked wrestlers that will compete include Owen Doster (No. 4 at 133 lbs.), Devin Broukal (No. 2 at 141 lbs.), and Griffin Schermer (No. 8 at 149 lbs.).

Concordia Wisconsin will be led by 197 lb. senior Mitchell Slatton (Granger, Ind.), who placed second at the UW-Stevens Point Open on November 4 to lead four Falcon placers. Sophomore Ramiro Vasquez (Yuma, Ariz.) placed third at 133 lbs., and freshman Merrick O’Donnell (Huntington Beach, Calif.) took fourth at 184 pounds to begin his collegiate career.

Other notes: Chicago won a 31-9 dual at Elmhurst on Tuesday…MSOE freshman Helton Vandenbush won the UW-Oshkosh Dan Gable Open last weekend at 174 lbs….UW-Parkside had five individual champions at the UW-Stevens Point Open on November 4…Wheaton was fourth out of 11 teams at the Trine (Ind.) Invitational last weekend, but dropped a 31-16 dual to Elmhurst on November 9…Dubuque’s Kalkbrenner was fourth at the Luther Open and UD placed three in the finals in the Silver Division…On November 7 UW-Whitewater defeated UW-Oshkosh 27-11 and the Warhawks 197-pounder Newman was d3wrestle.com Wrestler-Of-The-Week after taking second at the Luther Open last weekend…Lakeland won their home opener last week over Concordia Wisconsin 28-19…A team to watch is North Central, who defeated MacMurray 55-0, then captured the 11-team Trine Invitational with three champions…North Central also defeated No. 12 Augustana in a home dual Wednesday, 24-15.
