AWA 2015 Preseason State Weight by Weight Preview
As of Wednesday Oct 14
As brackets are filling up and getting tougher this is starting to look like a challenging tournament. The matches are a lot of fun as we get to see how wrestlers progressed over the summer and as they are filling into their weights. You don’t want to read too much into the results as it is the “preseason”, we look forward to this none the less.
This weight is filled with youngsters and there may be no clear favorite here. Zach Licht holds wins over a lot of the field and was a WIAA State Placer last year. The biggest threat being Jon Bailey a tough freshman from Sparta. Other contenders: Brody Kust, Dominic Dentino, Francesco Schiro and Zeke Smith.
Predicted Champion: Zach Licht
16 entries (Brackets are capped at 16)
You could argue this is the toughest weight in the entire tournament! The class has three WIAA State Placers (Josh Depies, Arturo Duran and Tyler Roecker) and three youth State Champions (Joey Bianchi, Nick Starich and John Diener) as well as a number other tough wrestlers. Throw in freestyle State Runner up Matt Anderson, who won Preseason State last year, and you’ve got one heck of a bracket.
Predicted Champion: Tyler Roecker
This bracket is an anomaly among the lighter weights with only 6 entries. However the final should be a lot of fun pitting State Runner-Up Aaron Schulist vs. State Champion Brock Bergelin.
Predicted Champion: Brock Bergelin
Another really tough bracket is led by 2x State Champion and NDSU recruit Paul Bianchi. Chasing Bianchi will be State Placewinner Nathan Hensley and State qualifiers Ben Gobel, Devon Schultz and Val Kochiu. 8th grader Aidan Medora should be a fun addition to this weight class as well.
Predicted Champion: Paul Bianchi
Two wrestlers who were both State Placers as freshman leading this group are Peyton Mocco and Weston Wichman.
A good supporting cast will make this bracket a lot tougher including Trent Leon, Jake Baldwin and Max Ward.
Predicted Champion: Peyton Mocco
This bracket rivals 113 as the toughest bracket of the tournament! It features State Placers Andrew McIntosh and Isaac Brockman as well as State Runner up Trey Hild from Illinois. In addition Josh Hickey is registered. Hickey was one match away from placing at State last year and had a dominant spring win over State Champ Justin Folley as AWA State Duals. Other contenders include Colton Ryan, Brady Shulfer and Vinni Digennaro. This should be a fun bracket to watch.
Predicted Champion: Josh Hickey
Aidan Yde will be the front runner heading into this one with two State Place finishes as a sophomore and junior. Trying to knock him off are State Placewinner Zach Miller and schoolboy Greco national Champion Josh Otto.
Predicted Champion: Aidan Yde
Air Force commit and State Champion Wilder Wichman is the class of this division. His main challenge will come in the form of 2x State qualifier Kelvin Yde. The two are no strangers to each other as they wrestled in the FS State finals 2 years ago. Adding depth will be State qualifier Brady Jamrozek and tough freshmen Bryce Karban and Grayson Vandenbush.
Predicted Champion: Wilder Wichman
Eddie Smith and Jose Acosta look to be the front runners at 160lbs. Smith is a State Placer. While Acosta has enjoyed success nationally he has yet to find it at the WIAA State Tournament. Look for Acosta to start his season off hot with a win here.
Predicted Champion: Jose Acosta
A number of guys here trying to establish themselves as the cream of the crop in Wisconsin. State Qualifier Helton Vandenbush is the only established wrestler in the mix and I we look for him to take home the title.
Predicted Champion: Helton Vandenbush
One of the smaller brackets in the tournament. Youth All American Jacob Somlai will try to push the more seasoned Sal Schiro.
Predicted Champion: Sal Schiro
This bracket has some fun names and it starts with Cadet National Champion Jacob Raschka. Raschka will try to stay hot, but standing in his way will be State Runner up August Peplinski and Cadet All-American Logan Murdy.
Predicted Champion: Jacob Raschka
The smallest bracket in the tournament features State Runner up Brady Koller.
Predicted Champion: Brady Koller
The heavy weight division provides a bit more firepower than 220. Cadet All American Keaton Kluever looks to be the star here. He will be challenged by teammate and youth State Champion Alex Martin.
Predicted Champion: Keaton Kluever
