(West Lafayette, IN) Hoping to snap a five-match losing streak, the 18 Wisconsin Badgers looked to gain back ground in the Big Ten against Purdue Friday night. Inside Holloway stadium, the Badgers did just that, powering their way to a 22-12 victory over the Boilermakers.

The Badgers won six of ten match ups, led by bonus point tech falls from seniors TJ Ruschell and Connor Medbery. ‘

Johnny Jimenez (JR) opened the dual at 125 lb. Jimenez faced La Crosse Central native Ben Thornton (RS SO). Thornton, a two-time WIAA State Champion and two-time runner up, was unable to find momentum against Jimenez, as Johnny secured a 4-1 decision putting the Badgers on the board first.

Again, Andrew Crone (RS JR) had one of the most exciting matches of the night at 149 lb. Heading into the third period Crone held a 5-1 lead over Purdue’s Nate Limmex (RS FR). Limmex could score a reversal bringing the deficit to only one. However, Crone was able to hold on for the 5-4 decision, tying the score at six.

Ruschell was the first to grab bonus points for the Badgers at 157 lb. over Mario Leveille (RS So). After a slow first period, Ruschell grabbed the lead and just kept on going, eventually claiming the 16-0 victory in the third period, putting Wisconsin up 11-6 at the break.

Storming out of the break, 3 Isaac Jordan (SR) followed at 165 lb, picking up another three for the Badgers with an 8-3 decision over Dylan Lyde. (RS FR) This brought the Badger lead to eight.

The 184 lb matchup featured Wisconsin native Hunter Ritter (RS FR) and Purdue’s Tanner Lyde (RS SR). The match was a close 6-4 heading into the final period. Lyde scored a quick takedown to start the period, knotting the match at six. Ritter was able to regain control scoring six more, earning the 12-7 decision. With two matches left, Wisconsin was in control holding a steady 17-9 lead.

Second ranked Medbery secured the second bonus point and final win for Wisconsin at heavyweight. Medbery netted the 18-3 tech fall over Tyler Kral (RS SR). Medbery was awarded the final points necessary at the end of the seven-minute regulation match. This brought the final score to 22-12.

Perhaps the most exciting matches of the night did not go in Wisconsin’s favor. At 133 lb Eli Stickley (R FR) held a 5-2 lead over Luke Welch (RS JR) with one period to go. Welch scored the reversal with two seconds remaining in regulation. Riding time was also in Welch’s favor sending the match into overtime. Unfortunately, Welch also secured the takedown, and with that the 7-5 sudden victory decision.

The Badgers suffered another tough loss at 141 lb. Cole Martin (R FR) started strong, but ultimately the Boilermaker’s Cody Pae (RS JR) was able to pick up the 6-0 decision, giving Purdue their only lead of the night.

The 174 lb bout featured another Wisconsin native in Oconto Falls’ Jacob Morrissey (RS JR). Ryan Christensen (R So) looked to derail the former three-time WIAA State Champion, but Morrissey prevailed grabbing a 4-0 decision.

In the penultimate match 11 Ricky Robertson (RS JR) faced true Freshman Christian Brunner. Robertson couldn’t get a read on Brunner, stopping his offensive attacks. Robertson fell 4-1, putting the Boilermakers just five points out of the lead.

In the end, it was the Badgers emerging finally victorious with a 22-12 final score, snapping a five-match losing skid. Wisconsin returns home to the Fieldhouse for alumni day this Sunday at noon. They will take on 14 Michigan for another ranked Big Ten matchup.
