Jordan continues his best start to season with 14th-straight win

MADISON, Wis. – In its first dual in nearly a month, the Wisconsin wrestling team dropped its second-consecutive conference result on Friday, as No. 9 Nebraska took down the Badgers, 29-11, at the UW Field House.

The Cornhuskers (8-1, 2-1) now trail the all-time series, 10-7-2, and have four wins in Madison.

Despite losing seven of the 10 matches, UW (1-3, 0-2) found bright spots in Ryan Taylor, Isaac Jordan and Ricky Robertson.

The trio picked up exciting wins, including Jordan who earned his 14th-straight triumph to begin the season.

Robertson was tested the most for his win, as he was forced to use the first sudden victory round in the 174-pound match to come out on top for the 10th time this year.

The tussle did not feature its first point until the second round when Robertson escaped the grasp of Dustin Williams. At the end of the third round the score was tied at one apiece, but Robertson finished off his opponent 45 seconds into the first sudden victory round with a two-point takedown.

Taylor’s 133-pound battle included two ranked opponents, as the Badgers wrestler came in at No. 6 and Nebraska’s Eric Montoya was 13th.

The duo alternated scoring throughout the entirety of the match with Taylor gathering seven takedowns and an escape and Montoya earning six escapes. Taylor evened his record to 1-1 with the 15-6 major decision victory.

Taylor now posts a 3-0 record against Montoya. He beat the Cornhuskers wrestler twice last season, including a 3-1 win in sudden vicory-1 at the NCAA Championships.

Third-ranked Jordan continued his best start to a season by shutting out No. 15 Austin Wilson at 165 pounds for his 14th-straight win. The victory also marked Jordan’s third win against a ranked opponent.

The Nebraska wrestler kept it within four points until the 21-second mark when Jordan earned a penalty point, followed by a takedown and capped off with a riding time point.

Jordan is now 2-0 against Wilson, as he pinned the then-20th-ranked Cornhusker 32 seconds into last year’s match.

The narrowest Wisconsin defeat came in the heavyweight match, as Brock Horwath was edged, 3-2, by No. 17 Collin Jensen.

Horwath trailed, 3-0, entering the final round, lessening Jensen’s lead to just one with 15 seconds left, but was unable to earn another score before time expired.

At 125 pounds, Johnny Jimenez fell behind early on and could not dig himself out, surrendering a pin to 10th-ranked Tim Lambert at the 3:25 mark. The result noted just the second time Jimenez had been pinned all year.

Anthony Abidin proved to be too much for Luke Rowh in the 141-pound grapple, as the Nebraska wrestler won, 15-0, by technical fall.

Andrew Crone faced off against his former high school teammate and fifth-ranked 149-pounder Jake Sueflohn, losing by a score of 9-3.

In the 157-pound match, TJ Ruschell fought tough in the first round but fell off in the second round, dropping an 11-2 major decision to No. 17 Tyler Berger.

For the eighth time already this year Ryan Christensen wrestled a ranked opponent. TJ Dudley, rated fifth in the 184-pound weight class, led 4-1 after two rounds but pulled ahead late in the third with a takedown and four-point near fall to take the match, 11-2, by major decision.

Rounding out Wisconsin’s results on Friday, 197-pounder Eric Peissig lost by technical fall, 17-1, to No. 16 Aaron Studebaker.

The Badgers continue with Big Ten competition at 8 p.m. on Friday, January 15, as the team hosts Iowa at the Kohl Center.
