WI wrestlers prep for USAW Univ. Nats and Cadet World Team Trials
Wisconsin wrestlers prepare for USAW University Nationals and Cadet World Team Trials
This past Saturday, during the Memorial Day weekend, we visited Madison and took in the afternoon practice of the Wisconsin Regional Training Center. The Badger Wrestling Room hosted training open to athletes who have met the criteria USA Wrestling established with the NCAA. The emphasis of the weekends training was to prepare for the USA Wrestling University National Championships and the United World Wrestling Cadet World Team Trials set for this weekend in Akron, Ohio (June 3-5).
Watching some of the top Wisconsin underclassmen training and competing in one room was an extraordinary opportunity. The final practice included three full matches versus different partners. Some were rematches of State high school Championships. There were many special wrestlers in attendance. As an example, one group included rising stars Jackson Hemauer, Jared Krattiger, Fritz Schierl and 2016-2017 incoming Badger Jacob Covaciu of Indiana. The talented room included Tyler Dow and Hayden Krein who met in the State finals along with State Champions Garrett Model, Jeremy Schoenherr, Jaden VanMaanen and Dylan Koontz. Other top athletes participating were Gavin Miller, Chris Ruf, Keaton Kluever, Connor Williams and Gavin Barnett. It was good to hear Mason Kauffman was at the camp practicing,-though he was not at the session we attended.
Another plus was watching some of the coaches scrimmaging with the athletes. Badger assistants Kyle Ruschell and Trevor Brandvold along with RTC athletes Camden Eppert and Nazar Kulchytskyy paired up with guys for matches. Badger coaches Barry Davis and Mitch Hull were in attendance sharing knowledge and teaching technique.
We wish the best of luck to the Wisconsin wrestlers competing at the UWW Cadet Greco-Roman and Freestyle Trials!
