UW Stevens Point to host No. 7 UW Whitewater in first home dual on Wednesday
STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point wrestling team opens its home dual schedule with a tough matchup as they host seventh-ranked UW-Whitewater at Berg Gym on Saturday.
The Pointers won their first WIAC dual of the season 38-9 at UW-Oshkosh on Nov. 17 and have competed at three open tournaments this season. Ben Vosters (Hatley, WI/Wittenberg-Birnamwood) leads UW-Stevens Point with 10 wins in 12 matches this season at 125 pounds. Logan Hermsen (Amherst Junction, WI/Amherst) is 8-2 at 165 pounds and was the runner-up at the Concordia (Wis.) Open on Nov. 21. Dan Squires (Muskego, WI/Wisconsin Lutheran) is 8-3 at 174 pounds, while Bo Seibel (Cambellsport, WI/Kewaskum) has posted a 7-3 mark at 197 pounds.
The Warhawks come into Berg Gym as the returning Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) champions with two wrestlers ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll. UW-Whitewater’s Isaiah Vela is the top-ranked wrestling at 149 pounds, while Matt Adcock, a former national runner-up, is ranked second at 141 pounds.
Adcock is scheduled to face Pointers’ senior Jared Kust (Shawano, WI/Shawano), who returns after a season-ending injury in 2014-15. Kust was 27-7 prior to the injury, including a 14-1 mark in dual matches. The last time the pair met, Kust prevailed in a hard-fought 5-3 decision. Another key match-up could come at 165 where Hermsen could meet returning NCAA qualifier Tom Gerszewski. Hermsen and Gerszewski have already met once this year with Hermsen coming out on top by a 5-4 decision at the Concordia (Wis.) Open.
UW-Stevens Point is looking for its first dual win over UW-Whitewater since Feb. 8, 2008, when the eighth-ranked Pointers won seven of nine matches to defeat No. 10 UW-Whitewater 31-12. The dual will begin at 7 p.m. at Berg Gym and will be streamed online here.
