La Crosse, Wis. – University of Wisconsin-La Crosse head wrestling coach Dave Malecek has announced the commitments of 15 high school wrestlers scheduled to join the Eagles for the 2017-18 season. This year’s class features six student-athletes each from Wisconsin and Illinois, two from Minnesota and one from Iowa. All recruits are subject to UW-La Crosse and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) eligibility requirements.

Joining the program this fall are Matt Anderson (Menomonie Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls High School), Josh Fiegel (Harvard, Ill./High School), Lee Fuller (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Conant High School), Jake Gille (Sobieski, Wis./Pulaski High School), Cal Hansen (Deerfield, Wis./High School), Chris Healey (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson), Spencer Hutchinson (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley High School), Tristan Jenny (Stoughton, Wis./High School), Danny Madonia (Shaumburg, Ill./Conant High School), Chase Pomeroy (Winona, Minn./Winona Senior High School), Colton Ryan (Cedarburg, Wis./High School), Sawyer Sarbacker (Mineral Point, Wis./Iowa-Grant High School), Josh Stenger (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Huntley High School), Zach Villarreal (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township High School) and Grant Zamin (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township High School).

“We’re excited about the quality of young men in his class,” said Malecek. “Our coaching staff worked hard at building relationships with each individual recruit. The future is bright for these guys.”

UW-La Crosse finished 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in 2016-17, recording its first undefeated dual season in school history and first undefeated conference season since 2011-12. The Eagles won the 2017 WIAC Championship, their 16th in school history. UW-La Crosse placed second at the 2017 NCAA III Midwest Regional and tied for 11th at the 2017 NCAA III Championships. Malecek was selected the WIAC Mertz Mortoreilli Coach of the Year for the seventh time in his career (2007-11, 2015, 2017).

Anderson comes to UW-La Crosse after a successful senior season where he finished fourth at the 2017 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Championships at 120-pounds in Division He projects to compete at 125-pounds for the Eagles.

Fiegel was a three-time state qualifier and two-time state medalist in Illinois. He completed his senior season with a third-place finish at 126-pounds at the 2017 Illinois High School Association (IHSA) 2A Championships. As a junior, Fiegel qualified for the 2A state championships at 113-pounds. He finished fifth at 106-pounds in the 1A championships his sophomore season. Fiegel projects to wrestle at 133-pounds at UW-La Crosse.

After an injury plagued senior season, Fuller comes to UW-La Crosse after qualifying for the IHSA Tournament in the 182-pound division in 3A. He projects at 184-pounds.

Gille comes to UW-La Crosse after completing his senior season with a sixth-place finish at 152-pounds at the WIAA Division 1 Championships. He will wrestle at 157-pounds at UW-La Crosse.

Hansen completed an impressive high school career by winning the 138-pound title in Division 3 at the 2017 WIAA Championships. He was a four-time state finisher in Division 3, placing fifth as a freshman in 113-pounds; third as a sophomore at 126-pounds and second as a junior at 132-pounds. Hansen projects to compete at 141-pounds for the Eagles.

Healey finished fifth at the 2017 Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) 2A Sectional. He will wrestle at 157-pounds.

Hutchinson finished his high school career as a 126-pound state qualifier at the 2017 IHSA 3A Championships. He projects to compete at 133-pounds at UW-La Crosse.

Jenny placed second at 120-pounds at the 2017 WIAA Championships in Division 1. He qualified for the state tournament as a sophomore and junior. Jenny is set to wrestle at 125 or 133-pounds.

After red-shirting at NCAA Division I Southern Illinois University in the fall of 2016, Madonia completed a successful high school career with a fifth-place finish at 132-pounds at the 2016 IHSA 3A Championships. He projects to compete at 133-pounds for the Eagles.

Pomeroy finished his senior season one away from qualifying for the MSHSL AA Tournament at 160-pounds. He was a 2016 state qualifier at 152-pounds and is projected to wrestle at 174-pounds.

Ryan reached the WIAA Championships three times in his career, including at 152-pounds in Division 3 his senior year. He will compete at at 149 or 157-pounds for the Eagles.

A three-time WIAA qualifier, Sarbacker was the Division 3 state runner-up at 120-pounds in 2017. He projects to wrestle at 125-pounds.

Stenger comes to UW-La Crosse after finishing his high school career as a two-time state qualifier at the IHSA 3A Championships. He finished fourth at 120-pounds in 2016 and is expected to wrestle at 125-pounds at UW-La Crosse.

Villarreal completed his high school career with a third-place finish at 126-pounds at the 2017 IHSA Championships. He joins his older brother, AJ at UW-La Crosse, a member of the Eagles’ football team. Villarreal projects at 125-pounds for the Eagles.

Zamin was a two-time state qualifier in the 3A Division of the IHSA Championships. He was a 145-pound qualifier as a senior and 138-pound qualifier his junior year. Zamin projects to compete at 149-pounds at UW-La Crosse.
