(Madison, WI) Sixteen wrestlers entered the WIAA Individual State Tournament undefeated this season. After day one of competition, only one wrestler from Division One has lost.
Francesco Schiro (Sr) of Madison La Follette entered today 42-0 at 120 lb. He added to his winning streak in the first round taking down Mitchell Anderson (Jr.) of Hudson 8-5. In the quarter finals, Schiro met his match in Kaukauna’s Brandon Micksh (So), in what was a hard fought 3-2 decision.
Schiro will work his way through the backside starting tomorrow morning at 10am.
Though there are two undefeated wrestlers in D1 at 145 lb, one of them is about to gain a loss Friday night. Jaden Van Maanen (Sr) of La Crosse Central and Jacob DeMeyer (Jr) of Rhinelander both boast unblemished records and will meet in the semifinal round.
To make it to the finals, they’re going to have to hand their competitor his first loss on the season. Though Van Maanen is the defending state champion, he’s bound to see his hardest competition of the year in DeMeyer.
Also in Division 1, Neenah’s Beau Yineman (Jr) grabbed his 100th win in the quarterfinal round. The 182 lb Yineman is the lone qualifier for the Rockets. He will wrestle in the semifinals against Billy Pitzner (Sr) of Milton tomorrow night.
In Division 3, though he wasn’t undefeated, crowd favorite Zach Anglin (Sr) of Bayfield/Washburn suffered a first round loss to Luke Pulvermacher (So) of Princeton. This knocked Anglin out of the tournament early. Notably last year, Anglin wrestled Stratford’s Macey Kilty in the semifinal round and reached the podium.
The Division 2 and 3 unbeatens will not wrestle until tomorrow morning at 11am in semi-final matches. If they are undefeated it means they won sectionals and have a bye until the quarterfinal round which is Friday morning. Stay tuned tomorrow to see if any other undefeated wrestlers meet their match on Day 2.
