Alumni, Family and Friends,

Hall of Fame

The UW Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony this past Friday was an outstanding event. Congratulations to all the legendary Badger athletes and coaches that were honored. It was great to get our first National Champion, Rick Lawinger, recognized with this group. There were 300 people at the event to see 8 individuals getting added. There were 90 people there from Rick’s hometown of Mineral Point, his High School coaching days at River Valley and his Badger Wrestling teammates/alumni, specifically to support him. Rick gave credit to his father as his first coach and role model, his high school coach and one of the greatest wrestling coaches Wisconsin has ever had in Al Baughman and finally his Badger Coaches Duane Kleven and Russ Hellickson. Attached is a picture of Rick with his High School and College Coaches.

CONGRATULATIONS RICK!

More Badger Wrestlers Honored

On Friday November 4, former Badger Wrestlers Marty Loy and Scott Schmitz will be recognized at the Wisconsin Wrestling Coaches Association convention. They will be two of the members of the class of 2017 to the George Martin Wrestling Hall of Fame. Scott basically took over the Mineral Point wrestling program in 1987 following Al Baughman (who coached from 1963-87) and has continued the success to today. Marty was the Head Coach at UW Stevens Point for 12 years from the late 1980’s, where there had been minimal success (at best), and built a Division III national power. Looking forward to attending the convention and supporting these Badger Wrestlers as well.

No Red-White wrestle-offs

The Coaching staff has decided that there will not be an inter-squad scrimmage this year. We will be using the performance at the early season tournaments to determine who will be representing the Badger Team during the dual meet season. It is far more important to see who performs the best against other teams than who wrestles best against a teammate. That doesn’t mean that a wrestle-off later in the year couldn’t happen. Our job is to determine the best line-up possible to represent the University of Wisconsin and this is what we believe is the best way to do it.

Pre-Season Kick-off cook-out

We will be having a pre-season cookout again this year at the Kalscheur Farm on Saturday, October 29. There will be a Team practice/scrimmage in the late morning followed by an afternoon cookout from 2-4pm. The cookout will be over in time for those who have a ticket to the Badger- Nebraska game to make it to Camp Randall. Those that would like to stick around with us can watch the game at the barn. We will send out more details on this in a separate e-mail.

Go Badgers!
