Junior National Championships
This past weekend 10 Badger Wresters participated in the USA Wrestling National Championships for Juniors (age 17-20) in Las Vegas. The Badger Wrestling contingent was the 3rd largest group from any University program. The Badgers were led by Cole Martin who won the National title at 139lbs! There were also 3 other Badgers placing in the championships with Ryan Christensen at 186lbs, Mason Reinhart at 211lbs and Ben Stone at 275lbs. In addition future Badger Evan Wick placed 2nd at 154lbs. Evan fell behind 8-0 and nearly pulled out the title losing 9-8. This was a solid showing for the young guys on the team. In all we will have 6 athletes qualified for the Junior World Team Trials in TX on May 20-22.
Off the mat
Earlier this month the Badger Wrestling Team was honored at the Buckingham ceremony for the Team Impact Award. This is awarded to the team participating in the most volunteer hours per person this past year. These young men continue to be great representatives of the Badger Wrestling program and our sport.
This weekend will be the final opportunity for the USA to get weight classes qualified into the Olympic Games with the tournament in Istanbul, Turkey. Right now the USA has 12 of the 18 total weights qualified. Only Russia and Azerbaijan have qualified more to date. Jesse Thielke will be competing on Friday to get himself qualified into the Olympic Games. Jesse has put a lot of hard work into his Greco-Roman career and we all wish him the best in his quest to become an Olympian first, then the gold medalist.
Next week will be final exams!
