Tuesdays with Barry 2-7-2017

We had disappointing results against the Hawkeyes in our dual last Friday.  As a coaching staff we need to do a better job bringing out fight in our athletes.  Wrestling is an amazing test of endurance, mental toughness, technique, and skill.  With that said, there are times when it is not much more than an officiated fight.  Its a fight for who can control positions, who can wear down their opponent first, who will give in when the going gets tough.  We have seen a special fight in this team and these guys; our job as coaches is to bring it out for every match.  The skills and techniques are very important, but without maximum effort and fight they alone won’t beat the top teams.

We are looking forward to see this fight once again this weekend as we have two Big Ten duals.  Friday night we take on the Boilermakers of Purdue.  Make sure you note that this dual will be LIVE on the Big Ten network at 5pm central time!  If you cant make it to West Lafayette, please tune in to the Big Ten Network Friday night.

On Sunday at noon we will take on the Wolverines of Michigan at the UW field house.  We are looking forward to a big crowd to help create a hostile environment.  There will be some great match ups!  We are also honoring all Alumni that will be in attendance.  If you’re planning on coming and have wrestled here at Wisconsin please email Coach Ruschell at kmr@athletics.wisc.edu to rsvp.

We also had Badgers compete at the Edinboro Open over the weekend.  TJ Ruschell, Johnny Jimenez and Santonio Cathery represented UW.  TJ went 4-1 on the day finishing 3rd and Johnny went 3-2 to finish 4th.  Both TJ and Johnny will be back in the starting lineup for this weekend.

Our redshirts finished their open schedule this past Saturday at the Don Parker Open in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  The four Badger participants brought home three gold medals and a bronze.  Evan Wick, Jacob Covaciu and Brady Wetter all came home with titles.  Patrick Spray also had a good tournament finishing third on the day.  Brady Wetter in his 2nd tournament at 197lbs received the outstanding wrestler of the tournament award.
