Pitt and Penn State Duals
This past weekends matches with Penn State and certainly Pittsburgh did not go the way we are capable of. We did not compete to the level required to succeed at the Division I level. That responsibility lies on our Coaching staff to make sure we don’t allow the momentum of a match get away from us. We were not the only team this weekend that saw how momentum can greatly effect the outcome of a dual. Minnesota losing to Indiana and the higher ranked Oklahoma losing 9 of 10 matches to Oklahoma State were not expected as well. We need to evaluate and make adjustments to our training and competition schedule. One thing we are looking at is making some changes to who will be wrestling in the Midlands tournament. We are discussing as a staff on who will benefit more from training through the Christmas to New Years break instead of competing.
There were 13 Badgers that competed in the UNI Open over the weekend with 10 placing in the tournament. Leading the way were Champions Seth Liegel and Hunter Ritter. Eli Stickley, Jake Stilling and Jared Scharenbrock placed 2nd, Nick Veiling and Cole Martin placed 3rd, Mason Reinhardt and Santonio Cathery were 4th and Michael Cullen placed 6th. We have seen some very solid results from several of the freshman redshirting this year creating great optimism.
Nazar and Connor will be in Las Vegas this Saturday at the US Open competing to earn a spot in the Olympic Trials next April. This will be a very competitive event as there certainly will be NCAA Champions that will not place high enough to qualify in through this event (top 7 at each weight qualify for the Olympic Trials). Connor is doing his final preparations in Madison. He just returned after spending a week training with National Team athletes under the direction of USA Wrestling National Coach and Olympic Champion Brandon Slay. Nazar is currently at the Olympic Training Center working with Coach Slay. Nazar’s training got derailed for a couple days last week as he required 12 stitches to fix the hole in his lip that his teeth made during a practice session! He is now ready to go.
Badger History Interviews
Coach Hull has been working on some “Throwback” interviews. I have attached a link to interviews that he did with NCAA Champion Pat Christenson and former Badger Coach Duane Kleven. I encourage you to take the opportunity to catch up on, or learn about, some Wisconsin Wrestling history!
