Alumni, Friends and Family,

Great weekend in Las Vegas

It was very gratifying to see our Team rise to the occasion for the first big challenge of the season by placing 2nd, only 5.5 point behind 4th ranked Ohio State, in the Cliff Keen Open. We placed ahead of Teams ranked 5, 9, 12, 13, 14, 16 and 20 on Intermat. We were led by Champion Connor Medbery, 2nd Zeke Jordan and 3rd Cole Martin. With Hunter Ritter and Ricky Robertson in 6th, Andrew Crone 7th and Eli Stickley 8th, we had more place finishers than any other team. What I was also very pleased with is the number of bonus points we earned with major decisions and falls. This is something we have not done well at in the past. I am confident we scored more bonus points than any other team. Without this effort by nearly every one of our guys we would have probably finished 4th or 5th.

What is most important in the performances we had at the Wolfpack and Cliff Keen Opens is the opportunity to improve our ranking position to get individually qualified for the NCAA Championships prior to the Big Ten Tournament. Later in the season the NCAA will produce a ranking at each weight. If you are in the top 24 at the end of the year you will likely be qualified into the NCAA Championship, regardless of your placement in the Big Ten Tournament.

Within a few days the performances we have had will be in the rear view mirror as we continue the journey to the end of season goals. Having said that, it has been very rewarding to see the benefits of the effort and work these young men have put into the season to date!

UNI Open

Last Saturday we had 6 Badger wrestlers go to Cedar Falls, IA for the UNI Open. We had three individuals make it to the semi-finals with Gabe Grahek and Evan Wick placing 3rd and Zander Wick earning 4th place.

Big Duals This Week

On Friday we will be competing in our first Big Ten Dual at Indiana. The Hoosiers may not have the strongest team this year but we won’t be taking anyone lightly, as they are still Big Ten wrestlers. The top match-ups for us will be Hunter Ritter against 10th ranked Nate Jackson and Jens Lantz against 17th ranked Elijah Oliver.

On Sunday at noon in the UW Fieldhouse, we will be hosting 17th ranked Northern Iowa. The Panthers have always been a tough match for us and this year will not be an exception. On paper they are considered a slight favorite as they are ranked ahead of us at 5 weights, led by 3rd ranked Dylan Peters at 125lbs. It is important that we make the this a strong home court environment, as it certainly is that for them when we competed in the old gym at UNI. WE NEED YOU AT THE FEILDHOUSE ON SUNDAY! We also encourage everyone to go to Lucky 1313 (two blocks from the Fieldhouse on Regent St) afterwards to socialize, meet with our staff and all watch the Packer game!

Go Badgers
