Alumni, Friends and Family,

Navy Classic, Concordia and Lindenwood Competitions
This past weekend we had Badger athletes competing in 3 different tournaments. The bulk of the varsity went to Annapolis to compete in the Navy Classic. Overall we could have competed better and we do expect that this will be the case going forward. The answer lies on us doing a better job coaching as this is a talented group of young men.

There were certainly bright spots as Zeke Jordan and Brock Horwath won their weight categories and Johnny Jimenez made the finals for the second weekend in a row. Ryan Christensen placed 4th and Luke Rowh, Jared Scharenbrock and Seth Liegel all earned 5th place. We also had 3 freshman compete on their own in the Concordia Open with Cole Martin earning the title at 141lbs. David Chadd and Ben Stone also placed. Freshman Eli Stickley traveled to St Louis for the tough Lindenwood tournament that included wrestlers from Missouri, Iowa and Oklahoma State.

Deglane Challenge in Nice, France and Golden Grand Prix in Baku, Azerbaijan
On Monday Nazar Kulchytskyy and Connor Medbery left to compete in the Deglane Challenge in Nice, France. There will be 6 other athletes from the USA on the trip that will be coached by USA Wrestling National Coach Brandon Slay. Jesse Thielke had been training in Baku, Azerbaijan with the USA Greco Team (led by National Coach Matt Lindland) for two weeks and will compete in the Golden Grand Prix on Sunday. The Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation awards $10,000 to the winner of each weight category so this tournament draws a very strong field. These tournaments work well with each of their training plans as the National Championships in Las Vegas will be 4 weeks later. Getting a competition in a month before the Nationals, which is also the Olympic Trials qualifier (top 7 at each weight qualify), is good timing in preparation to peak for a major Championship.
