Tuesdays with Barry (11/17/2015)

Alumni, Friends and Family,

Michigan State Open,
Spent a long day in the Gym at Michigan State with wrestling going non-stop from 9am until after 9pm on Sunday. We got back about 3am Monday morning. This as a great competition to start the season as the Team ended up wrestling approximately 100 matches. Certainly gives us a really good indication on what we are doing well and what we need to improve on. In the open division we were led by Johnny Jimenez finishing 2nd at 125lbs. Johnny beat one individual he lost to last year and has greatly improved his ability to score points from his feet. Rylan Lubeck, TJ Ruschell and Ryan Christenson all lost close decisions in their semi-final matches. Andrew Crone, Jared Scharenbrock, Jake Stilling and Brock Horwath also placed at their weigh categories. We certainly can and will need to improve and we are going to get other opportunities in the near future to face some of these individuals again.

We also had 8 freshman compete at this event on their own in the freshman-sophomore division of the competition. Hunter Ritter led the way by winning the 184lb weight class. Cole Martin finished 3rd with Eli Stickley and Mason Reinhart each finishing 5th  (individuals losing prior to the semi-finals could place no higher than 5th.

Navy Classic
On Friday we will be heading out to Annapolis, MD for the Navy Classic. This is the first tournament we will be competing in where team score is kept. The top 10 point scorers are counted, so the advantage here goes to the programs that can bus in and bring more athletes. We will be taking 13 Badger wrestlers to compete, but will be without Ryan Taylor as his first competition will be the Cliff Keen Tournament in Las Vegas in early December. Most of the matches we get here will be against Universities that we seldom see, which is the main reason we chose this tournament.

Thanksgiving
With everything that is happening in the world right now and with Thanksgiving right around the corner, we can all be thankful for the great country we live in. Though we are far from perfect, we are also the most generous and prosperous nation in the world.

Enjoy your family this coming week and GO Badgers!
