Alumni, Friends and Family,

All-Star Success
Zeke and Connor had an outstanding weekend representing the Badger Wrestling Team at the All-Star Classic to open the NCAA Wrestling season. Zeke spotted Mayes from Missouri a 3-0 lead and came back with two takedowns and riding time to earn a 5-3 victory. Connor controlled his match throughout and also scored two takedowns and riding time for a 5-2 victory over Walz from Virginia Tech. It was a great way to finish off the weekend as we had several other Badgers competing earlier on Saturday at the Pointer Open.

Pointer Open
I was very pleased with the guys, certainly with the results but more so with the way they competed. We ended up with six wrestlers participating, with all six earning a spot in the finals. Three of the freshman that competed unattached all won their weight classes. Patrick Spray started us off by winning at 141lbs. Patricks style on top is going to be very frustrating for his opponents over his college career. Zander Wick competed at 149lbs where he was hardly challenged all day, winning by a major decision in the finals. The other freshman to compete was Jacob Covaciu. Jake won one of the tougher weights, going 4-0 on the day and earning the title against the Division III National Champion at 165lbs.
At 157lbs, Rylan Lubeck wasnt challenged, except in the finals where he beat fellow Badger redshirt freshman Izeac Quintanilla. The final winner for the Badgers was at HWT where redshirt freshman Ben Stone pinned 3 of his 4 opponents, including a wrestler he had lost twice last year. Another redshirt freshman Mason Reinhart has moved up to 197lbs this year and placed second. He gave up 4 points on a reversal and near fall and just missed on a half dozen scoring opportunities through the remainder of the match.
I certainly recognize the we should have success in this tournament that is DII and DIII competitors. As I stated earlier, it wasnt the placement that has me excited but how these young Badger wrestlers competed.
