Alumni, Friends and Family,

Red-White Scrimmage

This past weekend our team participated in the Red-White scrimmage in front of several hundred Badger Wrestling fans. It is always difficult to compete against individuals that you train together with daily but it does serve a great purpose. Everyone made their weight plus 3 lbs an hour prior to wrestling. It also got a competitive match prior to the first competition in a couple weeks. For the Freshman it was the first time they wrestled a 7 minute match and the first time that riding time mattered in a final score.

There were a few match-ups that didn’t take place due to some injuries that happened or where recovery took longer than anticipated. If we were competing in-season many would likely have wrestled but it did not make sense to push the situation for a Team scrimmage. This is the main reason we wait each year to announce the match-ups.

So who’s on the Varsity line-up?

A question I get every year is how the intrasquad scrimmage sets the line-up. The wrestle-offs are important and normally the guy who wins is the number one guy. What is most important however, is who competes best against the other teams-not just against each other. We have a few tournaments through November and December that will assist in deciding who is the guy competing for the Badgers at the end of the year.

Post-Match Social

Thanks to all of you who joined the coaches at Lucky’s after the scrimmage. There were approximately 100 family members and fans that joined us to enjoy fellowship and talk wrestling. We will continue to make an effort to join everyone after the matches this season.

Practice

There were areas to work on that came to light through the wrestle-offs. We will be concentrating on some specific areas the next few weeks as we prepare for the season. One of the things that always shows up with the intensity of a match over practice, is the need to get out from the bottom. Life on a wrestling mat is pretty miserable if you spend most of your time underneath your opponent. Finishing your shot is also something we will be reinforcing in practice over the coming weeks.

Apparel

The Badger Wrestling Club is working with All American Supply to have Wisconsin Wrestling apparel available for purchase starting next week. All American will provide a site to order the apparel on wisconsinwrestlingnetwork.com. Take care of your Christmas needs and support the Badger Wrestling Club at the same time!

Again, thanks to all of you who came out to what the Red-White scrimmage.
