|To Alumni, Friends and Family,
Mother Nature wins-for now
As many of you are aware we cancelled the trip east to wrestle Rutgers and Maryland. As we were preparing for our Thursday departure to Newark we were informed by the Big Ten office that our dual with Maryland on Sunday was cancelled. We then decided to cancel the entire trip. We could have made it to Rutgers and wrestled the match Friday night but would have likely been stranded there and not been able to get back until Monday-at the earliest. Storm Jonas actually slid farther north than originally expected and Newark/NYC area got hit harder than anticipated so (unfortunately for wrestling) we made the right decision. We have rescheduled with Rutgers to wrestle on Friday February 5. We are working with Maryland to reschedule as well.
Illinois on Sunday
We will be hosting 12 ranked Illinois on Sunday at noon in the UW Fieldhouse. Illinois is led by defending NCAA Champion in sophomore Isaiah Martinez. The feature match will be at 165 where the Badgers 2 ranked Zeke Jordan will take on 3 ranked Steven Rodriguez. Join us afterwards at Lucky’s-a block away from the Fieldhouse on Regent St.
Since we don’t have much to report on this week we are putting up a Throwback Thursday interview today. Al Bauman was one of the most successful Wisconsin High School coaches in any sport. He coached future Badger NCAA Champion Rick Lawinger along with NCAA All-Americans Steve Lawinger and Mark Schmitz. He also had several other Mineral Point wrestlers compete for the Badgers as well. Mark Schmitz gives his insight to why Coach Bauman was so successful. Coach Bauman was also a musician in the early rock and roll era with ties to 2016 inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Steve Miller, as well as other greats. Go to the link below for an interesting read on one of Wisconsin’s great coaches.
