|Alumni, Friends and Family,
Nebraska came in with one of the best dual meet teams they have had in a long time. Overall they out-wrestled us in this meet. RT and Zeke had solid performances and Ricky controlled the match in a tight, overtime win. Andrew, Ryan and Brock all competed hard against nationally ranked individuals. We believe we can change the outcome in these matches if there is a next time at the Big Ten Championships. We definitely need to see improvement each week to have the confidence needed going into the Championships. It certainly doesn’t get any easier going forward!
Iowa on Friday
As we touched on last week, we will be wrestling Iowa on Friday, January 15 at 8pm at the Kohl Center. This match will also be carried live on the Big Ten Network. There will be some great match-ups with Iowa, with the Ryan Taylor vs 2 ranked Cory Clark leading the way. Since the competition is at the Kohl Center our get together afterwards will be at the Nitty Gritty, which is a block away.
Pat “Flash” Flanagan Open,
Several Badger wrestlers competed in the Pat “Flash” Open on Saturday. Freshmen Cole Martin and Hunter Ritter along with Senior Nick Veling all won titles. Freshmen Mike Cullen placed second and Eli Stickley placed 4throunding out those who placed in the top 4 (Martin and Stickley both beat the wrestler from Iowa that wrestled several varsity matches for the Hawkeyes last year).
Hunter Ritter has now placed 3rd, 1st, 1st, 1st in the 4 tournaments he has entered. He lost the first match of his college career and has won every match since. This loss came when he false started on a takedown attempt to start the overtime-it was his 3rd false start in the match which cost him a point. That ended the overtime before overtime clock even started!
Throwback interview with Marty Loy
Below is the link to read the interview of former Badger Wrestler and UW-Stevens Point Coach Marty Loy. Marty wrestled for River Valley under Badger Great Rick Lawinger, at Wisconsin under Duane Kleven and Russ Hellickson, brought UWSP to prominence in Division III and is now a Dean at UWSP. Dr Loy and his wife Becky have helped thousands of individuals over the past 25 years through Camp Hope. Take the time to read this one! Throw Back Thursday: Marty Loy
Team Bowling Championships
I did say last week I would report on the Team Bowling Championships. The Coaching staff (The Staff Infection) earned the Championship honors. Coach Hull, Ruschell and Brandvold were joined by RTC athlete Camden Eppert and Wrestling Assistant Breanne Eoff to make the finals against Team High on Life; Brock Horwath, Eric Piessig, TJ Ruschell and Nick Veling. Coach Hull had to injury withdraw for the finals (injury default-REALLY!) but there was still more than enough horsepower left for the Staff Infection to pull this one out. The secret weapon I mentioned last week worked out well as “Bre” rolled a 186, 210 and 190 in her 3 games to lead the way. Both Teams had 160 averages going in but High on Life folded under pressure with a final 159.5-146 loss.
