Top 10 Wisconsin Sophomores: WIWrestling.com 2015-2016 Season Review
The class of 2018 continues to look outstanding; three wrestlers won their 2nd State title in as many chances. As this group become upper classmembers we will continue to be impressed by their dominance.
Honorable Mention: Benji Peak D1 113 (Elkhorn), Frank Garcia D1 152 (Kenosha Tremper), Ryan Hannah D2 132 (Viroqua), Zach Lee D1 138 (Kaukauna), Dominic Dentino D1 106 (Hartland Arrowhead).
10. Ryan Anderson D3 106lb. (Clear Lake) Previously: UR (UnRated)
Anderson made a the leap from not qualifying for Sectionals as a Freshman to State Champion as a Sophomore! He also denied Macey Kilty (Stratford) the opportunity to accomplish being the first female wrestling State Champion in Wisconsin history. Anderson suffered only one loss on the year, that to Zach Anglin (Bayfield-Washburn), one he would avenge at the Sectional.
9. Aaron Schulist D1 113 (Mukwonago) Previously: 10
Schulist cemented himself as one of the best of the class ’18 making the State Finals a second time, however came up just short to Dylan Koontz (Stevens Point) in the final. Schulist, is always active during Freestyle/Greco season and will look to break through and make some noise on the national level this summer.
8. Garrett Joles D3 182 (Boyceville) Previously: 4
Garrett moves to the eighth spot based on success of others more so than his own results. Joles had a very strong Sophomore campaign falling only to a tough Dylan Anderson (Hudson) and then in the State Final to returning State Champion Kamren Bornbach (Stratford) 4-3.
7. Jared Krattiger D1 170 (Waterford) Previously: 3
Jared had an excellent season, a lone loss coming in the quarterfinals of the State tournament, to eventual Champion Billy Pitzner (Milton). Krattiger had a strong showing at Flonationals in Pennsylvania where he finished 4th. Jared is young for his grade level, so look for big things from him this summer at the Cadet level!
6. AJ Schoenfuss D3 120 (Stratford) Previously: 7
Schoenfuss is one of three in the class of ’18 to win his 2nd title in as many attempts! Following a 3rd place finish at the Sectional Schoenfuss once again turned it on when it meant the most and won another State title defeating a very tough Riley Blair (Fennimore) in the final.
5. Sam Stuhl D2 126 (Ellsworth) Previously: 8
Sam moved to Ellsworth and ended with a repeat result, a State title! Setbacks at Bi-State dropping matches to Trenton McManus (Adams-Friendship) and Dustin Hatfield (River Valley) did not deter him. Sam turned it on at the right time and avenged both of those losses on his way to his 2nd State title.
4. Alston Nutter D3 126 (Fennimore) Previously: 1
Nutter had another outstanding season, taking second place to go with a State title as a Freshman. In the ’16 State Final Alston came up short in a wild 15-13 match with fellow returning Champion Jeremy Schoenherr (Stratford). Alston will have another busy off season and we can’t wait to see these two meet again down the road.
3. Tyler Dow D1 152 (Stoughton) Previously: 6
Dow leapt from a Freshman season and a tough Sectional where he was unable to qualify for State to a runner up finish as a Sophomore. Not only that, Tyler continues to excel on the national level. Most recently he won the USAW Cadet Folkstyle Nationals in Iowa! Dow has a big upward trajectory so far in his career and it will be fun watching how far he goes.
2. Hayden Krein D1 152 (Sparta) Previously: 9
As good as Dow is Krein has had his number recently, pinning Tyler at Badger State, then prevailing in the State Final. In addition to the tough task of facing Dow the road to the final for Krein included facing Joe Cliver (Hortonville), Frank Garcia (Kenosha Tremper) and Tre`Vaughn Craig (Greenfield), defeating each in impressive fashion.
1. Jeremy Schoenherr D3 126 (Stratford) Previously: 2
To be the best you have to beat the best, so the saying goes. That is exactly what Jeremy Schoenherr did. Jeremy had an undefeated season culminating with a 15-12 win over returning State Champion Alston Nutter (Fennimore). Schoenherr is halfway to four State titles and continues to look impressive at every turn.
