Top 10 Wisconsin Juniors ’17: WIWrestling 15-16 Season Review
Top 10 Wisconsin Juniors: WIWrestling.com 2015-2016 Season Review (Class of ‘17)
The class of ’17 showed little change from the season preview compared to the ‘18 and ’19 classes. The top guys didn’t move at all and the season essentially showed we knew who they were. Notable exceptions on the list are the Koontz brothers (Stevens Point) with an outstanding ’15-’16 season as both won State titles, and move into the top 10 here.
Honorable Mention: Blaze Beltran D1 185lb. (Pewaukee), Dalton Hahn D1 195 (Reedsburg), Josh Depies D3 113 (Random Lake), Garrett Model D1 138 (Stoughton), Billy Pitzner D1 170 (Milton) and Cal Hansen D3 132 (Deerfield).
10. Jackson Hemauer D1 160 (DeForest) Previously: HM (Honorable Mention)
As a sophomore Jackson, the Wisconsin recruit, made a run to the State finals and this year he emerged as one of the best of the class of ’17. He won a loaded bracket which included State Champ Brock Benitz (Wisconsin Rapids) and Ohio State recruit Fritz Schierl (Stevens Point). After claiming the top spot in the state we look for him to have a breakout year at the national level.
9. Kamren Bornbach D3 182 (Stratford) Previously: 7
The emergence of the Koontz brothers moved Kamren on this list, but he had another fine season culminating with a second State title where he defeated Class of ’18, 8 Garrett Joles (Boyceville). Now a 2X State Champ we look forward to witnessing Kamren test himself at the national level this summer.
8. Nate Trepanier D2 145 (Oconto Falls) Previously: UR (UnRated)
Trepanier was under our radar and had a huge season this year with a 50-0 finish, a State Title and a big win over Hayden Krein (2 Class of ’18, Sparta). Trepanier didn’t even take a break as the season ended, winning Dominate the Dells defeating 2x D3 State Champion Wilder Wichman (Johnson Creek).
7. Brady Koontz D1 106 (Stevens Points) Previously: HM
Koontz, national level success in Greco, finally had his break through at the WIAA State Tournament, where he finished 6th in ‘15. In ’16 Brady won a crazy 10-9 OT match with Zach Szohr (Germantown) in the quarters and beat 2 class of ‘19 Eric Barnett (Hortonville) 1-0 in the semis. In the final Koontz won a more comfortable 11-4 decision over Dominic Dentino (Arrowhead).
6. Mason Kauffman D3 152 (Stratford)- Previously: 5
Kauffman becomes the fifth Stratford wrestler noted on these lists, the most of any team. So Kauffmann still has not lost a ‘wrestled’ match in high school, but still only has 1 State title. After squeaking out a match in the quarters and winning in the semis, Kauffmann was taken to the hospital with a heart condition and deemed unable to wrestle in the State finals. That was a tough break for a wrestler who could very easily have 3 State titles by now. We wish Mason a healthy off season and look forward to seeing him compete again next year.
5. Brock Bergelin D2 113 (Denmark) Previously: 4
Bergelin had another great year claiming a State title in dominant fashion. His only 15-16 blemish came early in the year at the Marty Loy tourney with a loss to Dylan Koontz 5-4 in the finals. Bergelin placed 4th at the recent USAW Folkstyle Nationals.
4. Dylan Koontz D1 113 (Stevens Point) Previously: HM
Much like his brother, Dylan has had success at the national level in Greco but did not break through on the State level until recently. This year we made his breaks and went 48-0, won a State title and beat 5 Bergelin at the Marty Loy!
3. Jaden Van Maanen D1 132 (La Crosse Central) Previously: 3
Jaden took stepped to the top of the podium this year following 3rd (Freshman) and 2nd (Sophomore) place finishes previously. Van Maanen would avenge a 2015 finals loss to Nathan Smith (Mukwonago) in the ’16 final 9-2. Look for him to continue his success at the national level this summer.
2. Jacob Raschka D1 195 (Pewaukee) Previously: 2
Raschka, like Van Maanen, was another wrestler with national level success, but no WIAA State title. Jacob dominated this year with a title at the Cheesehead, Battle on the Bay and finally a WIAA State title; 14-7 win over Dalton Hahn (Reedsburg). Raschka recently added a Flonationals AA plaque to his collection.
Devin Bahr D2 152 (West Salem/Bangor) Previously: 1
What can be said here about Bahr? Devin returned from injury and kicked everyone’s butt. He won his 2nd State title and in our estimation is the best wrestler in the class of 2017!
