Tom’s Top 10 Sophomores

Fall 2015                         (Send us a head shot of these Top Ten guys.)

Compiling this list was a little easier than the freshman as these wrestlers are more established and since they were all in the cadet division it was easy to see where they faired compared to one another in the off season.

Hope you have fun reading Wisconsin’s Top 10 Sophomores. Look for Top Ten Juniors next week!

Honorable Mention: Peyton Mocco (West Allis Hale), Abraham Sell (Chilton/Hilbert), Weston Wichman (Johnson Creek)

NutterHS72x110Alston Nutter
(Fennimore) – Nutter takes the top spot on the list having both a WIAA State Title and boat load of national success. Like Schoenherr, Nutter’s road to a freshman State title was anything but easy. Alston had to defeat 2x State Champion Hunter Dischler who was halfway to 4 State titles before being derailed. Nutter would also have a great spring finishing 2nd at both the UWW Cadet Nationals and USAW Cadet Nationals in Greco!  The next few years should be fun watching Stratford’s lightweight army, Nutter, Lull and Dischler battle it out for State titles.

Jeremy Schoennerr (Stratford) – Schoenherr was the 2nd Stratford Freshman State Champion last year following 7 Schoenfuss to the podium. Schoenherr’s road to the title was a little tougher as he had to beat returning State Champion Riley Lull (Fennimore) in the semifinals! Schoenherr had a strong spring winning both the FS and GR State titles.

Jared Krattiger (Waterford) – Krattiger made it all the way to the WIAA State tournament undefeated as a Freshman. He suffered only 2 losses, finishing 5th in the loaded160lb bracket which was extra tough as a number of people moved down to avoid the Breske/Reinhardt showdown.   Krattiger then won the Dominate the Dells  and finished 3rd at the USAW Folkstyle Nationals, losing  an OT match in the semifinals.

Garret Joles (Boyceville) – Joles finds his way in at 4 on the list on the power of his 2nd place finish at the WIAA State Tournament.  Making the finals at a weight class as high as 170lbs is almost unheard of and Joles did it by defeating returning State Champ Luke Nowak in the semifinals.  Joles then turned around and finished 3rd at the USAW Folkstyle nationals. Garret took the summer off due to an injury and should be back strong this season.

WIWrestling_rank_5

Frankie Garcia (Kenosha Tremper) – Garcia has gone back and forth in the past year with 6 Dow and 9 Krein. Garcia found his way to the higher spot on the list of the trio as he had success at the WIAA State tournament and in spring on the national level.  Frankie finished 4th in a very tough D1 145lb class, then in spring won Dominate the Dells, Greco State and the Central Regional.

WIWrestling_rank_6

Tyler Dow (Stoughton) – Tyler presents an interesting case checking in at 6 on the list despite missing WIAA State last season. Dow had a spectacular spring and summer, winning both FS and GR State titles as well as FS and Greco titles at Northern Plains and becoming a two-style (FS/GR) All-American at Fargo.  He was one of only two placing in Freestyle for Team Wisconsin.  We’re sure Tyler will shine in Folkstyle his sophomore campaign.

WIWrestling_rank_7

AJ Schoenfuss (Stratford) – Schoenfuss is another 2015 Freshman State champion and the first of two from Stratford where they look to be building a lightweight dynasty for years to come! Schoenfuss won the D3 106lb title with a win over Austin Wolfe.  He also finished 2nd at the very tough Bi-State with a loss to Tanner Schultz in the finals.

WIWrestling_rank_8

Sam Stuhl (Prescott) – Stuhl comes in at 8 on the power of a Division 2 120lb State title. He was one of only 4 Freshman to win a WIAA State title in 2015; Off season, he managed a 6th and 5th in Greco and Freestyle State respectively.

WIWrestling_rank_9

Hayden Krein (Sparta) – Krein notched a 3rd place finish in his first trip to WIAA State at 152lbs.  This is no small feat when you consider his bracket was almost entirely Juniors and Seniors. He followed this up with a win at FS State over highly regarded Frankie Garcia.

WIWrestling_rank_10

Aaron Schulist (Mukwonago)- Schulist made a Statement punching his way into the 106lbs finals at the WIAA State tournament securing a fall over Zach Szohr and a major decision over Brady Koontz. Schulist would come up short in the finals against Brandon Klein (Stoughton). He stayed busy in the spring with runner up finishes at both Freestyle and Greco State.
