Welcome to:

Wiwrestling.com "Wrester of the Week"

With Brad Baker

Welcome to a new feature on Wiwrestling.com. Each week a wrestler will be selected as “Wrestler of the Week” from a group of nominees. The ranking committee, along with coaches and fans across the state, will submit wrestlers they feel are deserving of qualifying for the title: “Wrestler of the Week”. “Wrestler of the Week” will run Monday through Sunday. If you would like to make a nomination for the following week, please drop me an email at Bbaker@wiwrestling.com . Be sure to include the wrestlers full name, high school, coaches name and number and the wrestlers recent accomplishments, including significant recent wins/accomplishments.

Week 2 “Wrestler of the Week”

Heading into week two I wasn’t sure if it could be as exciting as week one.  Week one offered many upsets which made it pretty difficult to select a wrestler of the week.  Week two wasn’t any different.  Two returning state champions were defeated last week along with many other state qualifiers.  The wrestler of the week doesn’t always have to consist of a wrestler scoring an upset; it could be a very solid wrestler defeating many solid opponents.  After the first two weeks, I don’t know why I act surprised about the early excitement.  I should know by now that every week in Wisconsin Wrestling will offer lots of excitement.  Just a reminder, our weeks will run from Monday through Sunday and if you would like to make a nomination for the following week, please drop me an email at Bbaker@wiwrestling.com .

Chris Wiegman, Cuba City/Southwestern, 125, Sr

Chris defeated T.J. Wunnicke 5-4 in a dual last week.  The loss by Wunnicke was his first loss of his high school career.  Wunnicke, a sophomore, won a division three state title last year for Ithaca high school at 103 pounds.  He transferred to Dodgeville where he has been wrestling 112 and 119.  Wiegman, a state qualifier last year at 112 pounds, bumped up to 125 when Dodgeville bumped Wunnicke up.

Other Nominees:

Anthony Azarian, Waterford, 145, Sr

It was very difficult not selecting Azarian as the week two wrestler of the week.  Anthony pinned Clinton’s Joe Clothier in the finals of the Beloit Invitational in 1:59 on his way to earning the invite’s most outstanding wrestler award.  Azarian, a transfer from Racine Park, was a division one state runner-up at 135 pounds last year where as Clothier was the 135 pound state champion last year.

Sergio Mireles, DeForest, 125, Jr

No, you don’t have to be a transfer to be a wrestler of the week nominee.  Mireles, a transfer from Madison East, defeated our week one wrestler of the week, Cashton’s Alex Dahl by a score of 9-8.

Kris Lenorud, Mauston, 171, Sr

Kris defeated our number two ranked 171-pound wrestler in division two, Jordan Pinney of Nekoosa/Port Edwards, by a score of 3-0.  Pinney placed fifth in the state at 160 pounds last year.  Lenorud won the Tomah Scramble.

Week 2 Late Nominee

Joe Mabry, Unity, 140, Sr

On December 11th, Joe defeated last years 140-pound division two state champion, Jon Lechleitner of Stanley-Boyd, 4-3 in the championship of the Barron Invite.  Mabry, a two-time division three state runner-up, earned his 100th career victory two days earlier.

NOTE: There are many others that I understand deserve a spot at least as nominees. For future weeks, please send in your nominees by Monday night. Be sure to include the wrestlers full name, high school, coaches name and number and the wrestlers recent accomplishments, including significant recent wins/accomplishments.
