Nowhere was the beauty of high school wrestling displayed better
than at Oconomowoc High School Thursday night.
Oconomowoc hosted the Slinger High School Owls in a Wisconsin Little
Ten Conference dual meet with the Owls winning, 36-30.
A dual meet is made up of fourteen weight classes, 103, 112, 119,
125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 215 and 285 pounds and
can be done by either a boy or girl from freshmen through seniors.
Whoever goes out for the sport and earns the right to represent the
school through scholastic achievement, hard work, a lot of practice
and determination and meets the weight requirements goes to the mat.
The start of the dual meet is determined by draw, thus it may be 103
pounds or it may be 285 pounds or anywhere in between. Usually the
lighter weights are younger wrestlers while the heavyweights are the
older students.
The dual meet between Slinger and Oconomowoc began at 112 pounds and
ended with the 103 pounders and the outcome came down to the 103
pounders, Slinger sophomore Reed Luengen and Oconomowoc freshman
Lars Anderson. The score was tied at 30-30 and the body language of
both grapplers was evident as they strode to the center of the mat.
Luengen and Anderson both knew the outcome of their battle would
determine the team winner.
Luengen got a takedown almost immediately, managed to get a cradle
hold and as hard as Anderson squirmed, Luengen was able to hang on
for the pin at 56 seconds. Slinger won 36-30.
Slinger got the first points on the board as Lucas Fassbender
defeated Cooney freshman Jacob Carroll at 112 pounds on a technical
fall at 5 minutes 37 seconds and then at 119 Mike Borst pinned
Cooney freshman Matt Dorney at 1:45.
That brought Oconomowocs strength to the mat as the Raccoons won the
next six bouts with 125 pound senior Zach Mommaerts leading the
charge. Mommaerts, who is ranked No. 4 by wiwrestling.com, pinned
Chad Strupp at 1 minute 14 seconds. At 130 pounds junior Gavin
Liesener followed with an 8-1 win over Josh Kovacevich and then
sophomore Taylor Mommaerts, ranked honorable mention, added three
more team points as he defeated Alex Schlough 9-2 at 135 pounds.
Oconoowoc now had a 12-11 lead.
The Raccoons then had three more wins as senior Jake Morrison, who
is ranked at No. 8, won a 9-1 major decision over Mitch Kramoris at
140 pounds, freshman Eric Lease battled Owen Ciriacks for a 4-1 win
and senior Tyler Yost followed with a pin of Dace Bregantini at
2:45. Yost came from behind as he went into the second frame
trailing 2-1. He took the down position, reversed his situation
almost immediately and then flattened Bregantinis shoulders for the
pin. Cooney led 25-11.
But then the Owls had back-to-back-to-back wins at 160, 171 and 189
pounds. Peter Stolling pinned junior Rob Peters at 1:09, Ben Kanas
defeated senior Mike Finn, 6-4 and Jake Zenner had a 14-0 major
decision over Cody Bear-Potter, respectively. Oconomowoc still led
but only by a single point, 25-24.
At 215 pounds Scott Fillmore and Logan Galezio tangled with Fillmore
never being in trouble. The Cooney junior was leading 8-0 after the
first two minutes, 10-0 after the second stanza and then he won on a
technical fall at 5:03, putting the Raccoons up 30-24.
At this point the fans in the stands were fully engaged as the
probability of a tie was in the making at 285 pounds. A tie would
send the outcome to the next match while an Oconomowoc win would
determine the team winner. Neither big man, Cooneys Cody Bear-Potter
nor Slingers Jake Schall, wanted to make the move that led to a
mistake. The first period ended 0-0. In the second period,
Bear-Potter chose to begin in the neutral position and then the
official decided it was time to begin calling stalling on both
wrestlers. Scholl was the first to be awarded a point for
Bear-Potters stalling, then both wrestlers were awarded a point for
stalling and the period ended with the Owl leading, 2-1. In the
final frame Scholl chose the down position, escaped and then he went
on a tear. He got a takedown, three-point near fall and then two
more points for the Raccoons stalling. The Owl then ended the bout
with a pin at 5:30. That tied the score at 30-30 and brought the
little guys to the mat, the fans to their collective feet and the
great finish.
It was high school wrestling at its best.
