Let’s wrestle at the…"Mineral Point Sectional Tournament" Mineral Point hosted the Division 3 individual sectional C tournament, which brought together the top two finishers at each weight class from four regional tournaments. Clinton brought the most wrestlers to compete with nine while Iowa-Grant and Mineral Point each advanced eight. QUARTERFINAL ROUND 130: #1 Alex Dahl (Cashton) v. #8 Jordan Schmitz (Mineral Point) Dahl spun behind Schmitz for the first takedown halfway through the period and remained on top for the rest of the period. Schmitz took bottom for the second, and his repeated attempts at a stand-up were slammed back to the mat by Dahl. Frustrated with not being able to turn him, Dahl starts the third period neutral and earns the takedown in the last :15 to win 4-0. 130: #3 Sean Olson (Iowa-Grant) v. HM Sean Miller (Royall) Miller pulled a reversal in the second period to tighten his trail 4-6 and spends the rest of the period trying to turn Olson with no success. Miller goes down for the third and Olson slides the legs in. The reversal fight began with Miller scoring one with 1:00 left, then Olson with :30 left, and Miller again at :15 to send it into overtime. Olson got the takedown to win 10-8. 160: #8 Anthony Sedlak (Riverdale) v. #10 Trevor Dammon (Aquinas) Sedlak got the only points in the first with his takedown, and starts the second period on bottom. He reverses in :30, rides Dammon out, and is warned for stalling before the period ends. Dammon starts the final period on top and manages to put Sedlak to back, inching closer to Sedlak with a 3-4 score. With seconds left, Dammon gets Sedlak on his back again and seals up a pin. SEMIFINAL ROUND 119: #6 Jerod Schmocker (Aquinas) v. NR Tyler Biba (Riverdale) Schmocker shucks the tie up to get hold of a single, but Biba claims the takedown with :45 left. Schmocker soon responds with a reversal and puts in the legs to keep his opponent down. Biba manages to get the escape before time is up. Schmocker goes down for the second and gets to his feet for the escape in :10. He responds with a takedown to lead 5-3 going into the final period. Biba begins on bottom for the third. Schmocker rides him out until the final seconds as Biba scores an escape. Schmocker wins 5-4. 119: #1 Andrew Dahl (Cashton) v. #7 Andrew Skog (Darlington) Dahl breaks the tie up and spins behind his opponent for the takedown at 1:15 and rides him out. Skog takes another try with his neutral choice for the second, but his early shot is countered by Dahl who drives it for the takedown at 1:20. While on bottom, Skog nearly rolls through, Dahl quickly regains, and Skog manages the escape at the end of the period. Dahl and Skog each get a reversal in the final period, but Dahl claims the win, 6-3. 135: #10 Tyler Mlsna (Cashton) v. HM Spencer Moore (Riverdale) Mlsna earns the first takedown, Moore reverses, but Mlsna claims his own reversal with :30 left and ends the period on top. Mlsna goes down for the second and has trouble getting out. He finally reverses with :10 left. Moore begins on the bottom for the third. Mlsna slips the legs in, but with :30 left Moore reverses and nearly puts Mlsna to his back, who quickly bellies up. Mlsna doesn’t get away but claims the win, 6-4. 140: #5 Charlie Soldner (Aquinas) v. #4 Virgil Pope (Clinton) The two wrestlers met up for a rematch of Tuesday night’s team sectional action where Pope claimed the victory over Soldner 6-4. Pope nails the takedown in :15, but Soldner escapes. Pope gets it again late in the period and Soldner repeats the escape on the edge of the mat with seconds left. Pope defers the second period choice and Soldner goes down. Pope lets him up and halfway through the period wins a fight for the takedown to lead 6-3. Soldner gets away again with :13 left on the clock. Pope begins on bottom for the final period, gets to his feet, and gets hold of Soldner’s leg to drive into the reversal in :20. Soldner escapes, gets a takedown at the buzzer, but Pope earns the win, 8-7. 145: NR Alex Wettstein (Aquinas) v. #2 Brent Hartley (North Crawford/Seneca) The first period’s upper body battle ends in a takedown for Hartley with :15 left in the period. Wettstein starts down for the second, but can’t get away as Hartley rides him the whole period. Hartley begins on bottom for the third, turns into Wettstein, and attacks with a reversal in :15 to up his lead to 4-0. Hartley rides Wettstein the whole period, is warned for the stalling, and claims the win. 152: #6 Brendan Leis (Cashton) v. #4 Danny Sullivan (Mineral Point) Leis earns the first takedown in :40. Sullivan gets to his feet and Leis decides to break him free. Sullivan goes for the shot, Leis locks up his head, but Sullivan powers for the takedown to lead 3-2 at the end of the period. Leis goes down for the second, gets to his feet, but is tripped back down. Sullivan rides the whole period. He goes down for the final period and Leis decides to cut him with 1:00 left. Sullivan is warned for backing up, and later is warned again to give Leis a point. Leis can’t grab the takedown, and the win goes to Sullivan, 4-3. CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 103: NR Cameron Segura (Kickapoo/La Farge) v. #3 Dylan Kansier (North Crawford/Seneca) Kansier earned the takedown in the first :40. Segura pulled a reversal with :30 left, but Kansier got out and behind for two with seconds left to lead 4-2. Segura deferred the choice for the second and Kansier chose bottom. Kansier faced Segura, got up to his feet, and reversed in :20. He set up the cradle with :50 left on the clock to score near fall points and sent the match into the final period leading 9-2. Segura’s third period choice of bottom allowed Kaniser to set it up and pinned with 1:29 left on the clock. 112: #6 Eric Oleson (New Lisbon) v. #4 Dylan Schroeder (Mineral Point) Schroeder grabbed onto the single leg and secured his takedown in :15. Schroeder set up the double arm bar and started to run it but was called for potential danger. He was awarded the back points. Schroeder began the second down and faced his opponent. He tried a granby but couldn’t clench it so adjusted to seal up a takedown. Oleson faces Schroeder, gets behind for the reversal at :53, and rides him out. Oleson decides to go down for the last period but has trouble getting out. In the final seconds he gets to his feet and escapes. Schroeder wins it, 7-3. 119: #1 Andrew Dahl (Cashton) v. #6 Jerod Schmocker (Aquinas) Dahl and Schmocker’s roads on opposite sides of the sectional bracket paired them up once again in the finals. Dahl majored Schmocker 10-2 in the regional final match. Dahl fires the first takedown in :15, Schmocker tripods, and Dahl gets too high. Dahl slips the legs in and is later warned for stalling halfway through the period. Schmocker chose neutral for the second. Both wrestlers are called on stalling, and Schmocker is awarded a point to put the score in Dahl’s favor, 2-1. Dahl begins on bottom for the third and fights for the reversal with 1:10 left in the match. Schmocker attacks with a reversal with :10 left, and Dahl ends the match escaping. Dahl’s win, 5-3. 125: #4 Garrett Kite (Iowa-Grant) v. #1 Josh Malott (Darlington) Malott majored Kite last weekend in regional finals. The two wrestlers fought their way into the finals once again for the rematch. Malott wins the fight for the initial takedown with :30 left in the period. He defers the second period choice and Kite goes down. Malott works the arm bar, comes close to back points, but is off the mat. Malott goes down for the last period with a 3-0 lead. He gets an escape with 1:10 left and drives for the takedown at :48. Kite gets away before the period’s end, but Malott earns the win, 6-1. 130: #1 Alex Dahl (Cashton) v. #5 Kevin Hesebeck (Clinton) Dahl gets the takedown, drives Hesebeck down to his back and pins in 1:11. 135: #3 Ben Oleson (New Lisbon) v. #10 Tyler Mlsna (Cashton) The regional final rematch gave Mlsna an opportunity to claim revenge. Mlsna was leading in last weekend’s regional finals match when Oleson put him to his back in the final seconds and pinned. Oleson takes Mlsna to his back in the first :45, but Mlsna regains himself and escapes with 1:00 left. Mlsna shucks through the tie up to grab the takedown with :40 left. Mlsna defers the choice and Oleson goes down for the second. Mlsna puts the legs in and Oleson struggles to get out. He fights for the escape and turns around to take Mlsna down to his back for the 8-3 lead. Mlsna scrambles out and around for a reversal before the period ends. Mlsna goes down for the final period, gets to his feet, and escapes in :20. Oleson claims another takedown and nearly puts Mlsna to back again. In the last seconds Mlsna gets away but Oleson regains control. Oleson’s win, 15-7. 140: #4 Virgil Pope (Clinton) v. #1 Cade Sarbacker (Iowa-Grant) Sarbacker gets the takedown 1:30 into the first and some back points to enter the second with a 5-0 lead. Sarbacker starts on bottom and escapes in :20. Pope reaches for the single leg and gets a takedown. Sarbacker escapes before the buzzer sounds. Pope goes down for the third and escapes. Sarbacker earns control again with :40 left, is warned for stalling, and Pope gets out with seconds left. Sarbacker wins 9-4. 145: #2 Brent Hartley (North Crawford/Seneca) v. #1 Greg Burke (Mineral Point) Burke gets the takedown halfway through the period and turns Hartley to back near the end to lead 5-0. Hartley defers the choice and Burke goes down. He faces Hartley, gets away in :30, and claims a takedown at 1:11. Burke enters the third with a 9-0 lead. Hartley chooses neutral for the third. Burke gets the takedown, Hartley gets an escape, and Burke finishes the match with a final takedown with :40 left. Burke wins 13-1. 152: #4 Danny Sullivan (Mineral Point) v. HM Sam Brandt (Weston) Sullivan takes Brandt to the mat with :30 left in the first, but Brandt gets away at the buzzer. Brandt starts on bottom for the second, faces Sullivan, and gets away halfway through the period. Sullivan begins the period on bottom and soon gets his escape to take the lead at 3-2. The period sees no score as time runs out with Brandt’s attempt at the takedown off the mat. Sullivan gets the victory with a score of 3-2. 160: #2 Nick Moore (Royall) v. #9 Jacob Gevelinger (Mineral Point) Moore claims the first takedown and back points to enter the second with an 8-0 lead. He pins at the start of the second with 1:39 left. 171: #2 Trevor Lyga (Aquinas) v. NR Nate Dernovsek (Clinton) Lyga claims the first takedown with :45 left and leg rides the rest of the period. Lyga begins on bottom for the second and escapes in :30. He gets a second takedown with :30 left in the period and puts the legs in again. Dernovsek begins on bottom and Lyga soon decides to let him go. Dernovsek gets a takedown near the edge of the mat. Lyga reverses soon after and gets the pin in 5:48. 189: #10 Jeremiah Hatfield (Cashton) v. NR Bryant Edge (Iowa-Grant) Hatfield lead 4-1 going into the second thanks to an early takedown and a couple back points. Edge begins on bottom and reverses in :30. Hatfield pulls his own reversal before the end of the period. Hatfield goes down for the final period. After a couple reversals, Edge comes up short of the victory. Hatfield wins 8-7. 215: #4 John Poppie (Onalaska Luther) v. #1 Rory Edge (Iowa-Grant) In the first period, Poppie is warned for stalling, and the match enters the second period with Edge leading 1-0. Edge escapes from bottom at the beginning of the first and drives into Poppie for the takedown to lead 4-0. Poppie escapes before time is up. He chooses the bottom position to start the final period and reverses with 1:25 left. Edge counters and reverses Poppie, putting him to his back. Not long after the match is stopped. The ref examines Edge’s leg, finds bite marks, and disqualifies Poppie for flagrant misconduct. 285:#9 Josh Chambers (Darlington) v. #4 Robbie Goldthorpe (Mineral Point) Last weekend Goldthorpe claimed the win and regional championship with a decision over Chambers 7-3 in the finals. Chambers charged through his side of the bracket to meet Goldthorpe once again. Going into the second period, Goldthorpe holds onto a 2-1 lead. He begins on top for the second and rides Chambers. Chambers is warned for stalling and later gets his escape with :30 left. As the buzzer sounds, Chambers nearly misses a takedown. Goldthorpe begins down for the final period and Chambers rides him out until the end, as Goldthorpe gets to his feet and breaks away for the escape to lead 3-2 with :30 left. Goldthorpe is warned for stalling. As the buzzer sounds, Chambers drives for the takedown and clenches it on the edge of the mat. Chambers wins, 4-3. D3 Sect. C - Mineral Point Results
