"Mississippi Valley Conference / Coulee Conference Tournament" Review
(Saturday, February 3, 2007)

Let’s wrestle at the…"Mississippi Valley Conference / Coulee Conference Tournament"

The Mississippi Valley-Coulee Conference tournament joined the two
neighboring conferences into one gymnasium, this year at Sparta High
School. The tournament was highlighted by ranked teams #10 Tomah and #9
Sparta of Division One, as well as many top individuals - 23 ranked
wrestlers by my count, not including a few who were out for this
tournament.

SEMIFINALS

119: D1 #6 Jared Bagniewski (HO) v. D2 #5 Jason Raasch (WY)

After claiming his first takedown near the end of the first, Bagniewski
chose neutral for the second period and earned another takedown before
the period's end. Raasch went on top for the third but couldn't hold
Bagniewski down for long. Bagniewski claimed a final takedown and won
7-1.

160: D1 #10 Theo Jensen (LC) v. D3 #9 Trevor Dammon (AQ)

Jensen earned the first takedown to pencil a 2-0 score for the first
period. Dammon deferred the choice for the second and Jensen went down,
escaping and then countering with a takedown within the first :30 of the
period. Jensen nailed two more takedowns during the period to up the
score to 9-3. Dammon went on top for the third and held his opponent on
bottom for a minute before Jensen escaped and claimed his final
takedown. Dammon escaped, but Jensen earned the win of 12-4.

189: D1 #6 Josh Sackmaster (ON) v. D2 HM Nathaniel Slack (VQ)

Sackmaster got the first takedown with :40 left in the first. Slack
deferred for the second period and Sackmaster chose bottom, escaping and
earning another takedown halfway through the period. He rides Slack out
for the rest of the period and is warned for stalling. Slack starts the
third on top but Sackmaster soon escapes. Both wrestlers are warned for
stalling and Slack is awarded a point. Sackmaster gets a final takedown
and wins 8-1.

FINALS

103: D1 #3 Kevin Betthauser (TO) v. NR Jacob Bakkum (WY)

Halfway through the period Betthauser got the takedown and rode him out
the rest of the period. Betthauser deferred the choice and Bakkum went
down for the second. The period ends with the score still at 2-0 and
stalling warnings on each wrestler. Betthauser picks bottom for the
third and the wrestlers repeatedly drive off the mat. Bakkum cuts him
late in the period and Betthauser clenches his final takedown to win
5-0.

112: D1 #4 Brandon Music (TO) v. NR Dennis Sen (LC)

Music nails the takedown off the whistle, cradles Sen up, and pins with
1:29 left on the clock.

119: D1 #6 Jared Bagniewski (HO) v. D3 #10 Jared Schmocker (AQ)

Schmocker tries for a single leg and they go off the mat. Bagniewski
tries his hand at a single leg and gets it with :30 left in the first.
Schmocker slips out for the escape with seconds left. Schmocker chooses
bottom for the second, but Bagniewski rides him out the entire period.
Bagniewski now goes down, escapes within :10, and responds with his
second takedown of the match with 1:00 left. Schmocker escapes with :20
left on the clock, but can't find the takedown. Bagniewski wins 5-2.

125: NR Kyle Stalsberg (LL) v. NR Scott Pierce (TO)

After a nearly successful headlock halfway through the period, Stalsberg
takes Pierce down to his back with :20 left on the clock, earning 5
points. Stalsberg defers and Pierce goes down, managing to escape at
1:12. Stalsberg soon claims another takedown paired with back points to
give him a 10-1 lead going into the final period. Stalsberg starts on
top, Pierce escapes again, and claims his first takedown of the match.
Stalsberg is warned for stalling, but earns the win with a 10-4 final
score.

130: D1 #1 Justin Pollack (TO) v. D2 #3 Jed Domke (VQ)

Pollack takes control of the first :30 of the match as he takes Domke
down then lets him go, setting the match pace. He repeats this
combination with 1:10 left in the period, but has trouble clenching a
third as both wrestlers constantly drive off the mat. Domke defers the
choice for the second and Pollack chooses neutral. Domke goes in for the
shot but Pollack shucks through to get a takedown with :15 left and ends
the period leg riding. Domke tries his hand on top for the third, but
Pollack ends up with the escape and soon gets another takedown, although
Domke looked to have almost fell into it. Domke claims a final escape,
but gives up a point when he is called for hands to the face. Pollack
ends the period with a takedown to put the score at 12-3, and must've
claimed some back points too as the final score was 15-3.

135: NR Zach Taylor (TO) v. NR Steve Stark (WB)

Taylor gets the first takedown within the first :40 of the match, and
starts to drive Stark to his back, but the buzzer sounds. Taylor defers
the second period choice and Stark goes down. The ref had to stop the
match twice for injury on Stark, so Taylor is now given the choice, and
goes down. Taylor ups the score to 6-0 going into the third and starts
on bottom. Stark gets too high, gives up the escape, but counters for a
takedown. Taylor escapes and the match finishes in a scramble for the
final two, but no more points are awarded. Taylor wins 8-2.

140: D1 #4 Jared Rickert (SP) v. D3 #6 Charlie Soldner (AQ)

Soldner's blood time starts early in the first period with a bloody
nose, and the period finishes with no score. Soldner goes down for the
second, shucks and spins to get the escape, but is stopped for blood
time again. Rickert bounces back with a takedown and back points, and
Soldner escapes near the end of the period. Rickert starts on the bottom
for the final period, gets to his feet, and Soldner loses his grasp on
the single leg. Rickert reaches out for the takedown, clenching it with
toes on the edge of the mat. More blood time is called before Rickert
finishes the match with back points to win 11-2.

145: D2 #3 Brandon Henry (VQ) v. D1 #5 Jacob McGinnis (TO)

Henry shucks through to try for the takedown, but McGinnis soon responds
and throws Henry to his back with seconds left on the clock. He earns a
5-0 lead going into the second. McGinnis goes down for the second,
escapes, and seals another takedown halfway through the period. He
cradles Henry up and earns more back points. Henry takes the top
position for the third but begins to ride high and McGinnis reverses.
Henry snags his escape on the edge of the mat, but McGinnis gets around
back for another two. He lets Henry go to finish the period and wins
15-2.

152: D2 #2 Craig Meyers (WB) v. NR Dustin Turner (TO)

The first period ends with no score. Turner begins on bottom for the
second and earns his escape before the period ends. The final period
starts with Meyers on bottom, who breaks away for the escape in :20.
Both wrestlers' attempts at the takedown are driven off the mat. Turner
is warned for stalling late in the match, but shucks the tie up to grab
the takedown with :15 left. Meyers earns his escape but comes up short.
Turner gets the victory, 3-2.

160: D2 #6 Vinnie Pedretti (WY) v. D1 #10 Theo Jensen (LC)

Jensen sets his pace immediately with a double leg takedown and rides
Pedretti, who gets away right at the buzzer. Jensen starts the second on
bottom and escapes in the first :10, drives in for the takedown, and
does this twice more to lead 7-3 going into the third. Jensen lets
Pedretti up to start the third, and no more points are scored as a pair
of stalemates are called. Jensen wins 7-4.

171: D3 #2 Trevor Lyga (AQ) v. D1 #10 Michael Jacobson (SP)

Lyga clenches a single leg takedown and Jacobson escapes by the period's
halfway mark. The first ends with Lyga leading 2-0. Lyga is down for the
second and gets his escape shortly, sweeping behind Jacobson for the
takedown and then letting him go. Lyga shucks around back for another
takedown before time expires. The third begins with Jacobson down, and
Lyga lets him up. Jacobson clenches his own takedown with a double leg
in the first :30 of the period to tighten the score at 7-5. Lyga gets to
his feet and escapes, sealing his victory at 8-5.

189: D1 #6 Josh Sackmaster (ON) v. D1 HM Trevor Huston (SP)

Sackmaster is warned for stalling early on in the match. He later tries
for the single but loses it. Hutson is on bottom for the second period
and breaks free within seconds. Halfway through the period Sackmaster
nails a takedown to take the lead at 2-1. Hutson breaks free again but
can't nail his single leg attempts. Sackmaster begins the third on
bottom, gets to his feet and escapes to take the lead again, however
gets called for stalling and a point goes to Huston to tied it up at
3-3. The match is sent into overtime. Sackmaster goes hard for the
double leg, is off the mat, but soon after clenches the two points and
the victory, 5-3.

215: D2 #4 Tyler Manning (WY) v. NR Mark Knapmiller (HO)

Manning takes Knapmiller down to his back halfway through the period and
pins with :45 left on the clock.

285: D1 #5 John Van Gundy (TO) v. D2 #10 Kody Zahrte (BF)

Van Gundy throws Zahrte down to his back, but manages to scramble out
before the third near fall point is awarded. The wrestlers head into the
second period with a 4-1 score. Van Gundy looks to go for the throw
again as the period starts with both wrestlers neutral, but no more
points are scored. Zahrte is on bottom for the second but Van Gundy
immediately lets him up. Van Gundy gets the takedown and lets him go
again. In the scramble for the final takedown, Van Gundy lands on top
and wins 8-3.
