2006 "Mid-States" Review

Let’s wrestle at the…2006 "Mid-States"

103: D1 #4 Joey Marsh (Wausau West) v. Angel Sierra (Evanston)

Sophomore Marsh faced senior Sierra last year in the quarterfinals and won 4-3.  Marsh went on to place fourth and Sierra fifth.  This year’s rematch took place in the championship round.

To start the first period, Sierra shoots an ankle pick, but Marsh throws him to his back for 2 take down and they go off the mat.  Sierra then does a standup and gets away with 30 seconds left.  Marsh leads 2-1 at the end of the period.

For the second, Sierra defers and Marsh chooses down.  Sierra tries to spiral ride, but Marsh does an inside stand up and gets away for 1 point.  Sierra then finishes a duck under for 2 take down.  Marsh tries a stand up but Sierra sits on the ankle and holds on until the period expires. The score is tied 3-3.

In the third Sierra chooses down.  Marsh locks up a nearside cradle and turns Sierra for 2 near fall. Sierra tries a granby roll but time expires.  Marsh wins 5-3

112: D1 HM Alex Bartram (Muskego) v. D1 HM Jason Kyle (Wausau West)

Senior Bartram met Kyle, a 14-3 sophomore in the finals after close matches throughout the tournament.

The match begins as Kyle shoots an outside single and takes Bartram down for 2 take down.  Bartram tries to set up a granby roll and Kyle just lets him go for 1 escape.  At the end of the period Kyle leads 2-1.

Bartram chooses down for the second.  Kyle is warned for stalling after riding parallel for half the period. Bartam then does a standup and gets away for 1 escape.  Kyle then shot in on a double but Bartram sprawled and spun around for 2 take down as time expired. Bartam lead 4-2 after the 2nd period.

Kyle chooses down.  Bartram sets up multiple cheap tilts but never scores any near fall points and rides Kyle for the whole period to win 4-2.

119: D3 #4 Jon Walvoord (Cedar Grove Belgium) v. D1 #7 Sam Umlauf (Wausau West)

After a few close matches including a double overtime with D1 #9 Casey Powell of Waukesha North, sophomore Umlauf meets senior Walvoord in the finals, who placed third at state last year.

In the first Umlauf tries multiple shots but cannot finish anything and the period ends 0-0.

Umlauf chooses down for the second. Walvoord turns Umlauf twice using an arm bar tilt to score 6 near fall points. Umlauf then gets to a base and does a standup to score 1 escape point. Umlauf takes Walvoord to his back using a single leg to score 2 take down but no near fall, are awarded. At the end of the period Walvoord leads 6-3

Walvoord chooses top to begin the third. Umlauf gets an escape on the edge of the mat for 1 escape. Umlauf tries a head outside single, but Walvoord sprawls and spins around him for 2 takedown. Umlauf gets and escape and then finishes a single leg takedown for 2 points with 18 seconds left. Instead of cutting him, Umlauf tries to turn Walvoord but is unsuccessful. Walvoord goes on to win 8-7.

125: D2 #5 Ben Lodise (Pewaukee) v. D1 #4 Steven Monk (Wausau West)

Senior Lodise makes a few upsets in the seeding on his way to finals including a 5-3 victory over D3 #1 Garrett Kite of Iowa-Grant to meet sophomore Monk in the bout for the championship.  Monk had little trouble making his way to finals, pinning every opponent.

The first begins as Monk gets a front headlock and snaps Lodise to the mat and spins around for 2 take down. Monk then spends the rest of the period trying to turn Lodise using cheap tilts, but is unsuccessful. At the end of the period Monk leads 2-0.

Lodise chooses down for the second. Monk puts in the legs and runs a half nelson and turns Lodise to his back. Monk then switches to a Saturday night ride and records a fall with 1:03 left in the 2nd period.

130: D3 #2 Josh Malott (Darlington) v. Gerald Harris (Evanston)                         

Senior Malott, a runner-up at last year’s state tournament, met fellow senior Harris in the finals who had come off of a 6-4 win over D3 #4 Sean Olson of Iowa-Grant in the semifinals.

In the first Malott finishes a duck under for 2 take down.  Malott then tries to turn Harris the rest of the period using cheap tilts, but doesn’t score any near fall points.  At the end of the period Malott leads 2-0.

Harris chooses neutral for the second.  Harris shoots in on a double leg and finishes it for 2 take down. Malott finishes a stand up on the edge of the mat for 1 escape.  At the end of the period Malott leads 3-2.

To begin the third Malott chooses down. Malott scores an escape for 1 point.  Malott then does an arm drag and takes Harris down for 2 points.  Harris gets an escape late in the period.  Malott wins 6-3.

135: D1 #4 Shawn Perry (Wausau West) v. NR Brad Dhein (West Bend East) 

The 11-3 senior Dhein challenged 17-1 sophomore Perry for this years Mid-States championship.

The first begins and Perry does a quick duck under and takes Dhein down for 2 points. Perry then puts in the legs and turks Dhein over for 3 near fall. At the end of the period Perry leads 5-0.

Dhein chooses top for the second. Perry hits a standup for 1 escape and then in a scramble, spins around Dein for 2 take down. Perry scores 3 near fall using the Saturday night ride. Perry gets out of position and Dhein reverses him for 2 points. Perry then quickly reverses him back at the end of the period. Perry leads at the end of the period 12-3.

Perry chooses down for the third. Perry does a switch right off the whistle and finishes for 2 reversal. Perry then locks up a cradle and turns Dhein for 2 near fall. Dhein then breaks his lock and reverses him for 2 points. Perry does a stand up and gets away for 1 escape. Perry then gets a front headlock and throws it by to score 2 take down. Perry wins 19-5.

140: D3 #1 Cade Sarbacker (Iowa Grant) v. NR Jerick Kuester (Waukesha North)

Returning state champion Sarbacker met up with 11-3 junior Kuester after pinning his way into the finals.

In the first Sarbacker finishes a double leg takedown for 2 points. Sarbacker then cuts Kuester for 1 escape. Kuester shoots in, and Sarbacker gets a front headlock, then switches to a free style half and spins around for 2 take down. Sarbacker leads 4-1.

To begin the second Kuester chooses top. Sarbacker does a standing switch for 2 reversal. Sarbacker then locks up a cradle and turn Kuester for 3 near fall to finish the period leading 9-1.

Sarbacker chooses neutral for the final period. Sarbacker shoots in and finishes a double leg take down for 2 points. Sarbacker then cuts Kuester for 1 escape. Kuester then shoots in and Sarbacker throws him by for 2 take down. Sarbacker then sets up a bar and turns Kuester for 3 near fall. Sarbacker wins 16-2.

145: D1 #2 Brandon Marcis (Wausau West) v. D1 #5 Robert Guzman (Delevan Darien

Marcis and Guzman, top-seeded seniors with no losses coming into the tournament, pinned and tech falled their way into the semis where they both won close matches to advance them into the championship.

Marcis shoots a double leg and finishes it for 2 take down. Guzman tries multiple stand ups but cannot get away. At the end of the period Marcis leads 2-0.

The second begins with Guzman choosing down. Marcis cuts him for 1 escape. Marcis takes a couple shots but Guzman blocks and no points are scored. At the end of the 2nd period Marcis leads 2-1.

Marcis chooses down for the final period. Guzman puts the legs in but Marcis is able to get away for 1 escape. Marcis the shoots a low double and finishes for 2 take down. Marcis then cuts Guzman for 1 escape. Marcis does a arm drag and takes Guzman down for 2 points. Marcis cuts Guzman and goes on to win 7-3.

152: Sharaham Sattariaghdam (Niles North) v. Brett Rice (Poynette)                    

The 20-3 senior Sattariaghdam scrambled through his side of the bracket to face 17-1 sophomore Rice in the finals.

Rice does a snap down and then drives through Sattariaghdam for 2 take down. Sattariaghdam hits a stand up for 1 escape. Rice leads 2-1 at the end of the period.

Sattariaghdam chooses down for the second. He does a stand up and gets away in 5 seconds. Sattariaghdam does a snap down and spins around for 2 take down. Rice does a reversal and scores 2 points. Sattariaghdam then gets an escape for one point.

Rice chooses down for the third. Sattariaghdam cuts Rice for 1 escape. Sattariaghdam snaps Rice down and spins around for 2 take down. Sattariaghdam then cuts rice for 1 escape. Rice shoots in and Sattariaghdam throws him to his back and records a fall with 35 seconds left.

160: D2 #1 Kendall Vogel (Pioneer Westfield) v. NR Trevor Sletten (Brookwood)

After winning by major decision in his first match of the tournament, former state runner-up Vogel pinned his way into finals against 11-4 junior Sletten.

Vogel does a double leg take down for 2 points, and then cuts Sletten for 1 escape. Vogel finishes a high crotch for 2 take down and then cuts Sletten for 1 escape. Vogel then does an arm drag and finishes it for 2 take down and then scores 2 near fall. At the end of the first period Vogel leads 8-2.

Vogel chooses down. Vogel does a standing switch on the edge of the mat for 2 reversal. Vogel then cuts Sletten for 1 escape. Vogel gets in deep on a double and finishes it for 2 take down. Vogel the cuts Sletten again for 1 escape. Vogel then does a high crotch and scores 2 take down. Then he puts in a half nelson and turns Sletten for 3 near fall, to win 19-4.

171: NR Jason Gruettner (Muskego) v. D1 #7 Jackson Hein (Wausau West)

After decisioning D2 #10 Tom Wojahn of Horicon in the semifinals, junior Gruettner meets sophomore Hein in the finals, who placed third at Mid-States last year.

Gruettner shoots a deep single and the switches to a lift and brings down Hein for 2 take down. Hein does a stand up and gets away for 1 escape. Gruettner then shoots a high crotch and finishes for 2 take down. Gruettner leads 4-1 at the end of the period.

Gruettner chooses down. Hein cuts him for 1 escape. Hein tries a head steal but slips and Gruettner covers for 2 take down. Hein then reverses Gruettner for 2 points. Gruettner then hits a switch and get 2 points for a reversal. At the end of the period Gruettner leads 8-3.

Hein chooses bottom. Hein hits a standing switch and get 1 point for an escape. Gruettner takes a shot but hein sprawls and spins around for 2 points. Hein then cuts Gruettner for 1 escape. Hein hits a head steal on the edge of the mat and gets 2 take down and 3 near fall. They then go off the mat, and Hein cuts Gruettner for 1 escape as time expires. Hein wins 11-10.

189: NR Kyle Castellion (Muskego) v. NR Steve Ehrlich (Niles North)

Junior Castellion defeated the #1 seed Aaron Rice of Portage 4-2 in the semifinals to save him a spot in the attempt for the championship against senior Ehrlich.

No points were awarded in the first period as the two wrestlers just worked on setups and didn’t really do much.

In the second Castellion choose bottom. Castellion does a stand up and gets away in 3 seconds. Ehrlich then snaps Castellion down and spins around for 2 take down after a long scramble. Castellion hits a switch and gets 2 reversal on the edge of the mat. At the end of the 2nd period Castellion leads 3-2.

To start the third Ehrlich hit a standing switch on the edge of the mat for 1 escape. Ehrlich then takes a shot, but Castellion quickly spins around him for 2 take down. Ehrlich gets an escape with 30 seconds left. Ehrlich then shoots a low double and at the buzzer the ref awards him 2 points for the take down. Ehrlich wins 5-4

215: D3 #1 Rory Edge (Iowa Grant) v. NR Alex Polizzi (Beloit Memorial)

The 8-1 freshman Polizzi impressively pinned his way into the finals where he met former state and Mid-States champion Rory Edge, a senior in his final wrestling season who came into the tournament with an 18-0 record.

The match begins as Edge does an explosive double and finishes on top for 2 take down and 3 nearfall. Pollizzi then works back to a base and tries to sit out. Edge does a suck back and pins him with 55 seconds left in the first period.

275: D2 #1 Luke Meddaugh (Whitewater) v. NR Travis Frederick (Big Foot)

            7-0 (12)                       3rd at State last year

            12-2 (10)                                 State qualifier last year

The top two seeds met up as predicted in the finals, third-place winner at last year’s state tournament Meddaugh and state qualifier Frederick.

Meddaugh threw Frederick to his back on the edge of the mat in the first and then recorded a fall in 52 seconds.
