The Cheesehead Invitational.  Enough said.

Ready?  Let’s wrestle…

SESSION 2

Round 4

112:  A few upsets were seen at this weight in round 4, but the most shocking upset occurred when NR Chris Larson of Stoughton pinned #6 Hunter Burghy of Iowa-Grant in 1:53.

119:  #9 Shawn Perry (Merrill) v. #3 Arik Yde (Heartland Arrowhead)

Merrill gets the first takedown, but Heartland escapes the hold for one and returns to a tie-up.  Merrill goes back in for another takedown but never gets it.  In the 2nd period, Heartland defers and Merrill chooses down.  Merrill escapes to put the score at 3-1 in his favor, then claims another takedown off of Heartland with a double leg.  Time runs out in the 2nd as Merrill is trying to tip his opponent.  Heartland chooses down for the 3rd, gets put on his back, and gives up three near fall points.  The period ends with Merrill letting Heartland go and then going back in for a final takedown.  The final score was 10-2 Merrill.
130:  #9 Bret Klopp of Wrightstown upset #7 Tony Cleary of DeForest with a pin in 1:39.
140:  The #10 seed Jered Hensley of Montini major decisioned the #7 seed, #6-ranked Brad Hucke of Heartland Arrowhead with a score of 11-3.
145:  In a double overtime bout, the unranked #5 seed Aaron Erickson of Merrill defeated the HM #12 seed Chris Limmex of River Valley 4-3.

Round 5

103:  In one of the first fifth round matches, the unranked #3 seed Dan Schiferl of Stoughton pinned the #6-ranked #6 seed Cameron Flock of Cashton in 1:52.

112:  #10 Derek Rauls (DeForest) v. NR Steven Monk (Wausau West)

DeForest goes in for the double leg, and Wausau tries to spin around back of him.  Wausau gets the takedown and puts DeForest right to his back with a tight cradle.  Before the period ends DeForest comes out of the hold for a reversal to make the score 5-2 Wausau.  Wausau defers, and DeForest chooses down for the 2nd period.  Wausau uses his position to work another cradle throughout the period.  In the 3rd Wausau escapes from the bottom and tries to go back in for a takedown but DeForest gets it to put the score at 8-5 Wausau.  With :35 left Wausau pulls a reversal.  DeForest does get out of the hold, but Wausau counters with another takedown to put the final at 13-6 Wausau.

112:  NR Chris Larson of Stoughton, coming off of a pin over #5 Hunter Burghy of Iowa Grant, pulled another upset over #6 Brodie Altfillish of Merrill 9-0.

119:  #3 Garrett Kite (Iowa Grant) v. #8 Jeffrey Crook (River Valley)
River Valley claims the first takedown of the bout and works on turning Iowa Grant to his back the rest of the 1st period.  Iowa Grant defers the choice for the 2nd, and River Valley chooses down.  River Valley escapes and scores another takedown off Iowa Grant.  River Valley again turns Iowa Grant to his back to put him ahead 11-0.  Iowa Grant chooses both up in the 3rd period.  River Valley gets the first takedown, but Iowa Grant finally pulls off a reversal to score his first two points of the match.  With River Valley managing to escape late in the period, the final was 14-2 River Valley.

125:  #3 Nate Coulliard (Kaukauna) v. #6 Matt Schneider (Merrill)
With no one scoring in the first period, Merrill chose down for the 2nd period.  Kaukauna tries to flatten Merrill, but Merrill keeps coming back up to his base.  Merrill looks to almost have the escape but is off the mat.  The 2nd period ends with still no score.  Kaukauna chooses down for the 3rd period.  Merrill is riding high on Kaukauna, trying to crank on the arm, but Kaukauna comes out the back door for a reversal and the first two points of the match with :45 left.  The final score ended up 2-1 Kaukauna.

125:  Iowa Grant’s #10-ranked Darrin Hampton came out on top for the fight for the takedown in his match with #7 Cyle Schneider of Wrightstown, put the legs in, and secured a pin in 1:14.

130:  #9 Bret Klopp of Wrightstown upset #6 Brad Larson of Stoughton with a pin in 5:27.

135:  It was a rough fight for the first two points in the bout between #3 Brandon Arentz of Cashton and #1 (Illinois) Dalton Bullard of Belvidere, and at one point Arentz looked to have gotten the takedown and had been awarded the points, but there was some confusion in the scoring.  Still a 0-0 score, Belvidere pulled a takedown, put Arentz to his back, and pinned him in 3:02.

152:  In a rematch of the Bi-State bout in which #9 Myles Elsen of Cashton had defeated #7 Dave Hoy of Heartland Arrowhead 9-7 in the 7th place match, Hoy claimed his revenge with a win of 9-3 over Elsen.

171:  The first fifth round upset at 171 occurred between NR Brent Lenard of Wausau West and #6 Beau Carter of Wrightstown.  Lenard defeated Carter 4-2.  #8 Jesse Roberts of Luxemburg-Casco also upset #7 Jeremiah Hatfield with a pin in 3:55.

275:  NR Blake Swalheim of Stoughton defeated #2 Derik Laufenberg of Cashton in a high-scoring match resulting in a 16-12 final score.

SESSION 3

Semifinals

112:  The two unranked wrestlers in the semifinals held their own against their ranked opponents.  #1 Andrew Dahl of Cashton pulled a win over NR Steven Monk of Wausau West of 4-2 although Monk scored the first point in the match with an escape, and #8 Andrew Zwirlein of Heartland Arrowhead decisioned NR Chris Larson of Stoughton 8-7.

119:  An upset in the final between #9 Shawn Perry of Merrill and #2 Ryan Renon of Wrightstown, Perry came out ahead 8-2.

135:  #1 Cade Sarbacker (Iowa Grant) v. Brian Martin (Montini)

This was the first of two impressive 135 pound semifinals between a 2x state place winner, #4 seed Cade Sarbacker and 2x state champion and last year’s Cheesehead champion, #1 seed Brian Martin.  Career-wise, Sarbacker had the disadvantage.  His 3rd and 4th place finishes at state weren’t quite the back-to-back championships Martin had experienced.  But careers didn’t mean anything to Sarbacker.

Within the first five seconds, I had to rub my eyes and look a little closer at what had just happened.  Sarbacker had tossed Martin straight to his back with a wickedly tight head throw.  Everyone in the gym was on their feet trying to get a look, and the Iowa-Grant crowd was roaring.  For the entire first minute of the match Martin was on his back, unable to do anything in Sarbacker’s hold.  By anything, I may as well mean breathe too.  Martin was hitting Sarbacker’s arm that whole minute, the signal that he couldn’t breathe (or so I thought), but the ref didn’t stop the match.  Martin managed to actually pull a reversal out of that hold which Sarbacker escaped from at the end of the 1st period.  The score was 6-2.

The 2nd period began with Sarbacker on bottom after Martin deferred.  The whistle blew, and in a flash Sarbacker was out, Martin took him back down, and Sarbacker was out again.  The score jumped to 8-4 in a mere five seconds.  Martin went in again for a double leg to narrow Sarbacker’s lead to 8-6.  After blood time with :47 left in the 2nd, Martin decided to let Sarbacker up, and they remained tied up for the rest of the period.

Martin chose both up for the 3rd period.  Sarbacker was warned for stalling, and the two went off the mat.  Martin scored a takedown, but Sarbacker reversed, and with :08 left Martin escaped and tried to go for a major move but could not.  Sarbacker scored yet another takedown to make the final score 13-9, Sarbacker.  The #4 seed would move on to the finals.

135:  #1 Dustin Perry (Merrill) v. Dalton Bullard (Belvidere)

Although I had intended to watch this match just as closely, the first :05 of Sarbacker-Martin enthralled me so much that I lost my focus on anything else.  I did, however, fortunately peel myself away to observe the final period and overtime of the Perry-Bullard match.  Let’s take a quick look at these two wrestlers.  #2 seed Dustin Perry of Merrill is a 2x state champion whose only disadvantage was that his team had never attended Cheesehead before.  The #3 seed Dalton Bullard of Belvidere is a 3x state qualifier in Illinois, a state championship runner-up, and last year’s Cheesehead champ.

Like I mentioned, I began watching this match in the 3rd period with a 6-5 score in Perry’s favor.  Perry, who chose down for the 3rd period, got an escape with 1:15 left to put him up 7-5.  Bullard, however, retaliated with a takedown in the final :30 of the period to tie up the score.  Time would run out, and overtime would begin.  With both wrestlers tied up throughout overtime and the prospect of double overtime looking likely, Bullard took the fate of the match into his hands and nailed a takedown in the last :10 to win the match and put himself into the finals with Sarbacker.

140:  #1 Brad Welter (Merrill) v. #1 Greg Burke (Mineral Point)

Another semifinal bout with two very impressive wrestlers, both ranked #1 in their divisions.  The match started out with Burke scoring the first takedown, but Welter reversed before time ran out in the period to tie up the score at 2-2.

Welter deferred the choice for the 2nd and Burke chose both up.  Burke scored the first takedown once again, and once again Welter countered with a reversal.  The score was tied back up at 4-4.  Burke escaped from bottom, tied up with Welter, and was warned for stalling with 1:15 left.  Welter took Burke back down to make the score 6-5 in his favor, Burke reversed to make it 7-6 in his favor, then Welter got a penalty point to send the match into overtime.  In the overtime period, Burke drops to a level, goes in for the legs, and gets the takedown and the win.

145:  It was one of the biggest upsets of the tournament - #8 Aaron Kersten of Boyceville shocked the crowd with a tech fall over #1 Tyler Bollant of Iowa Grant, 19-2.

152:  The #2-ranked 152-pound wrestler in the nation, Mikey Benefiel, pinned #5 Danny Sullivan of Mineral Point in :15.  They sure don’t just give away those national rankings.

160:  #2 Denis Mecklenburg (Luxemburg-Casco) v. #7 Joe Budi (Kaukauna)

In the 1st period the two wrestlers tie up with Kaukauna on the leg and LC on the head, they break away, and tie back up side-to-side.  The period ends with no score.

Kaukauna chooses down for the 2nd period, sits, and stands for the first point of the match with 1:32 left in the period.  Kaukauna then reaches for LC’s leg and takes him down with it with :25 left.  Kaukauna leads 3-0.

In the 3rd period LC chooses to go down and gets the escape to make the score 3-1.  In the tie-up, LC is trying to pull Kaukauna back to the center of the mat, but they go off the mat.  With :33 left, LC gets a takedown to tie up the score.  Kaukauna ends that with a reversal with :03 left.  LC gets one final point for clasped hands, but he falls short 5-4.

189:  Ethan Winel of Montini, who defeated #5 Casey Gray in Round 5, faced #1 David Casper of Westby in the semifinals and held his own once again.  Winel held the lead up until the final :45 when Casper pulled a reversal to edge the win of 5-4.

I don’t know if this was actually the best match of the tournament or if it just felt like it because of the crowd, but either way - this was my favorite match.  Too bad for that handful of people that had started getting their coats on after 215 and left - they missed a spectacular match with a spectacular atmosphere.  There were Kaukauna fans screaming, “Go!  Go!  Go!  Go!” and Iowa-Grant fans chanting “Go, Cody, Go!”  I really had to fight the urge to stomp my feet along with them.
