THE WESTBY QUAD
The night started when I got to the door of the Westby High School
gymnasium and realized, "Oh, that’s right… it costs money to get in
here". Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Hall for lending me the three dollars to
get in. Walking into the gym I took a deep breath as I looked to see
four mats lined up next to each other. I have to give credit to Koy
Kosek for covering tournaments like Bi-State and Cheesehead - not to
mention the state tournament. I thought watching four matches at a time
was a challenge. I’ll have to learn to get used to it.
I apologize in advance if any information is inaccurate. After checking
and re-checking my stats, I am confident in my records, however if there
is a discrepancy, do not hesitate to bring it to my attention.
Ready? Let’s wrestle…

HIGHLIGHTS
After the first round, the statistician for mats one and two informed me
that Casper had just won his 100th match. He went on to get 101 and 102
that night as well. Congratulations to David Casper.
Wrestlers who I had expected to see compete at Westby but did not
included Richland Center’s 215 pounder Ryan Schmidt, Aquinas’s Charlie
Soldner at 130, Westby’s Tommy Raasch at 275, and Cashton’s Derek
Laufenberg also at 275. I do know that Raasch and Laufenberg were out
due to injury, as well as Cashton’s Jeremiah Hatfield who would have
wrestled at 171.
Job well done to wrestlers who went undefeated at Westby - they include:
Aquinas: Jerod Schmocker (119), Trevor Dammon (160), Trevor Lyga (171)
Cashton: Cameron Flock (103), Andrew Dahl (112)*, Alex Dahl (125),
Brandon Arentz (140), Justin Flock (145), Travis Brueggen (152)
Richland Center: Lucas Doudna (135), Derek Spencer (215)
Westby: Aaron Breuer (130), David Casper (189)
Additional congratulations to the three wrestlers who pinned all three
opponents:
Westby’s Aaron Breuer, SO (130), Cashton’s Justin Flock, SR (145), and
Aquinas’s Trevor Dammon, FR (160)
*Also, I would like to note that Andrew Dahl received no matches.
Although it is part of the sport, making weight is not necessarily an
easy thing to do, and to do it yet not get to wrestle would be
frustrating - my personal opinion though.
Interview with: Westby’s David Casper, ‘05 State Champ @ 171 D2
So I hear it’s your 100th, 101st, & 102nd wins tonight. Congratulations.
Does it feel like that many?
No, not at all. It feels like I haven’t started yet - they’ve flown by.
Do you remember your first win?
I remember my first loss and my first win. My first loss was to Rob
Heller of Central, and my first win was over a kid from Black River
Falls.
What is your strategy this year as opposed to last year, coming off of a
state championship?
I’m still working hard, and I’m not going to look past anyone this year.
I look at everyone as if they were a state champ so I don’t look past
anyone. I’m working hard, working out, and staying dedicated.
Do feel lucky to have Nathan Clements (state runner-up at 171 in D2)
around here to keep you up on your game?
Yeah, they’re at another tournament with us this year in Rice Lake so
that will be cool. I get to wrestle him I think four times this year.
And he’s dating my neighbor so I see him a lot.
I guess so then. Are you guys pretty good friends - have a pretty good
rivalry?
Yeah, we’ve been wrestling each other since we were in second grade.
Do you find good competition at the tournaments Westby goes to?
Yeah, most of the tournaments we go to are pretty tough. I know there’s
the Reedsburg tournament this weekend - some pretty tough teams there -
then a couple of team tournaments. Then we go to Bi-State, Cheesehead,
New London - quite a few others.
To wrap things up, it was a great meet and a good start to the season
for many wrestlers. You will have realized that most of the accounts of
matches were just the final scores. I tried to predict the best
match-ups beforehand and keep a closer account of those. I hope this
style appeals to most people. Also, thank you to the Westby
statisticians.
