I know quite a few wrestlers, and cross country runners, who have never been ranked number one but came out on top, like the Brookwood Falcons 2003 Girls Cross Country team (State Champions) . Travis Grawin of Royall was ranked 2nd in the Crossface last year, right before state, but he won state.

Don’t ever go on only what the rankings “say”, they are basically just guidelines not the actual results.
