103 is a Must for Wisconsin
Wrestling
There has been much talk of reducing weight classes in Wisconsin, to
reduce the number of forfeits in wrestling. The weight class normally on
the chopping block is 103. Some people whine and complain, it’s so hard
to find kids that small in high school, and they have to forfeit because
of it.
Well, basically why should the kids who are smaller and can’t
participate in other sports like football or basketball be denied their
opportunity to compete, just so some team has a better chance at winning
a dual meet? In my personal opinion that is just plain wrong. Reading
the Wisconsin Wrestling Online Forum, I noticed people saying this
regional here, and this one over here only had two kids at 103. Well
there are 48 Regionals in the state so how does a person expect every
bracket to be filled at every regional. It is actually a very rare case
for a 103 bracket to only have two kids. Also I noticed a 160 pound
bracket in division 3 that had only two kids.
The 103 weight is usually dominated by underclassmen that haven’t
matured yet. So in conclusion this weight cant be taken away from the
sport, or the smaller kids are being denied their chance at becoming
champions, basically because their different because they are too small.
And isn’t that what sports/high school are all about is giving people
the opportunity to be the best they can. So who are we to say “sorry kid
call me when you put on fifteen pounds”?
