ELMHURST, Illinois – The MSOE Raiders put the finishing touches on the 2006-07 wrestling season by placing tenth in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional on Saturday, February 17 in Elmhurst, Illinois.

In the consolation bracket, Gronland defeated Rysavy from St. Olaf for the second time in the tournament, this meeting a 5-3 decision. He then fell to third seeded Myanganbayar Batsukh of Saint Johns 5-3 in the third place match.
Unseeded Christopher Jackson MSOE took fifth at 125 pounds, despite losing his first match of the day, a fall to second seed Jake Oster of Elmhurst in the quarterfinal round. Walton bright spot as Maranatha wrestlers end season at NCAA Great Lakes Regional

Elmhurst, IL – February 17, 2007

The men’s wrestling team completed their season as they participated in the 2007 NCAA Great Lakes Regional Tournament, hosted by Elmhurst College. Maranatha Head Coach Scott Hawes took a relatively young and inexperienced Crusader team to a tournament that has been dominated by institutions with a long history of wrestling excellence. Despite the lack of experience and depth, the Crusaders represented themselves well, but fell well short in the final standings. Maranatha finished a distant 15th place as the final team standings were presented. Augsburg College, the perennial favorite, won the tournament by a landslide as their wrestlers were seeded #1 in every weight class, and won all but the heavyweight division

Maranatha’s Chad Walton was the only Crusader grappler to experience a win at this year’s regional tournament. Walton pinned Timothy Yee (Knox) in 3:30 in the first round, then was knocked out of the championship bracket by #1 seed in the Great Lakes Region, and No. 3 nationally ranked Jafari Vanier (Augsburg) in a technical fall, 20-3. In the wrestle back to 3rd Place, Walton pinned Anthony Myers (Concordia) in 5:32. Walton was then ousted from the tournament by Brian Ranger (Elmhurst) in a decision, 12-7.

CUW Wrestlers Neske 3rd, Massman 5th at NCAA III Great Lakes Regional

Clayton Neske (Jr., Mequon, WI) placed 3rd at 285 lbs. to lead the Concordia wrestling team to an 8th place finish in the 15-team NCAA III Regional here today. Joe Massman (Soph., Taylor, WI) finished 5th at 149 lbs., duplicating his finish from last season. Neske, seeded 6th, went 5-2 on the day with four pins. In the 3rd-place match, he pinned Lakeland's Mark VandenHoogen, which set him up for a true-second place match against Augsburg's Andrew Neumann with a possible national berth on the line.
Neske (10-5) put Neumann on his back in the first, but he scrambled out of it, and Neske held a 5-0 lead. Neumann then controlled the match with riding, and battled back for a 8-5 win. "This was a big day for Neske," commented Head Coach Bret Corner. "He had Neumann on his back, but didn't have a tight lock. As a junior, Neske will be back. He proved he is one of the top heavyweights in the nation today."
Massman (22-14) was 3-2 on the day, opening the day with a pair of wins to advance to the semi-finals against Augsburg's Jared Evans, a 2-time All-American. Evans scrambled out of bounds on two takedowns attempts by Massman in the third, and Evans held on for a 4-2 win. In the consolations, Massman dropped a 5-2 match to St. John's Roger Anderson, but came back strong to defeat Wheaton's Joe McHale in the 5th-place match with a 7-1 decision. "This was the best that Massman wrestled all season. He is disappointed, but he finished the season with a solid match. He can build on this for next year."
Dan Crowley (Soph., Gladwin, MI) went 2-2 at 125 lbs., one match away from placing in the top six. Crowley finishes the season 19-14.
