Preview! AWA Winter Classic Toughest Weights

The AWA Winter Classic has turned into one of the premiere Wisconsin in-season youth tournaments since its inception in 2014.  Five states are represented in this years competition with some of the best teams the Midwest has to offer; Celtic Elite (IL), Shamrock (MI), Wrestling Factory (IL), MN Elite (MN), Thoroughbred Wrestling Academy (MO), X-Factor Elite (WI), Crass Trained (WI) and host Askren Wrestling Academy.

The exciting All Star Youth Dual will separate the morning Laser Classic from the afternoon AWA Winter Classic.  This dual is highlighted by USAW Freestyle National Champion Aidan Medora (AWA) taking on Super 32 Champion Joshua Saunders (TWA)!  There are many matches worthy of talking about. Check out the match-ups here at the Winter Classic site.

While every weight in the elite tournament are super tough (Find the wrestler list here.) let’s take a close look at three of the toughest weights in the tournament, starting with 79lbs.   79lbs. is highlighted by 2x AAU National Champion Chase Murphy (MN Elite), with USAW All-American Blaine Brenner (Crass Trained), USAW AA Dominic Thoreson (Crivitz), Northern Plains Runner Up Jack McClimon (Celtic Elite), Winter Nationals Champion Jordan Blew (Force), 2015 State Runner Up and USAW AA Nathan Vande Hey (AWA), and FS/GR state Placer Ethan Barnard (Fox Valley Elite) all in the mix!  Any way you slice it, this weight class will have great matches from the quarterfinals on.

The weight class with the largest number of entrants (20 at 89lb,) deserves serious attention.  It’s hard to point out a clear a clear favorite in this weight, but if we had to pick one it would be 4x USAW AA Paxton Creese (MN Elite), Creese also won the AWA Winter Classic in 2015.  Battling him for the 2106 title will be USAW AA Dietrich Jaeckel (AWA), Preseason Nationals AA Owen Gerdes (Celtic Elite), State Champ Kylie Welker (Higher Level), and state placers Jordan Craft (X-Factor), Cam Domke (Wrestling Factory) and Mason Campshure (Kaukauna)!  This bracket should provide amazing matches all afternoon long.

The 138lb bracket might not be the largest in numbers, but one could definitely make the argument it’s the toughest.  USAW Freestyle National Champion Aidan Medora (AWA) and Tulsa National Champion Isaiah Parker (Wrestling Factory) lead the pack here and look to provide an epic final.  Also challenging for a spot in the finals will be Winter Nationals Champion Colten Hawks (TWA), Greco State Champion Ian Wendt-Utrie (Beaver Dam), Freestyle State Champion Aiden Vandenbush (Random Lake), State Placers Noah Ross (Izzy Style) and Lucas Eaton (TWA).

All the action takes places at Arrowhead High School North Campus.  Laser Classic starts at 9am, All Star Dual at Noon and AWA Winter Classic at 1pm.
