Pointers Wrestling Update | 2/02/16

Hey Pointers Wrestling Fans,

This past weekend the Pointers took 5th out of 32 teams at the Pete Willson-Wheaton Invite. Six Pointers placed in the top 8 in their weight class. Logan Hermsen pinned his way to the finals before losing to DII All-American Nick Fishback in a rematch of a match that Hermsen won at the Pointer Open. Jared Kust won 10-1 over the 10 ranked wrestler in DIII before avenging a loss to 5 ranked Matt Adcock on his way to a 3rd place finish. Ben Vosters finished 4th, Dan Squires 5th and Cody Nielsen and Bo Seibel ended 7th. Nielsen won the tournaments’ Most Falls in the Least Time award, edging Hermsen by 3 seconds.

The next six weeks will be exciting for Pointers wrestling. On Friday night, the UWSP wrestling team hosts UW-La Crosse at 7pm in Berg Gym. The Pointers are undefeated in the WIAC and are ranked 24 in DIII, while La Crosse has one WIAC loss and is ranked 5 nationally. We are expecting to have a large Pointer crowd on Friday night for an exciting dual. After the dual we will have a social in room 146. We hope you can be a part of it. If you can’t make it, there will be a livestream of the dual through the UWSP Athletics website.

Next week the Pointers host the WIAC tournament on Sunday, February 14th. The Pointers will be in the race for the team title with 5 La Crosse and 14 Whitewater. If you are unable to make it to the WIAC Championships, the matches will be live streamed on Trackwrestling.com. The final test before regionals is a dual against defending NCAA Champions Augsburg in Minneapolis on February 19th. Regionals will once again be at Wabash College in Indiana. The NCAA tournament will be in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On March 10th, the night before the NCAA tournament in Cedar Rapids, UWSP NCAA Champ Cody Koenig will be inducted into the NWCA DIII Hall of Fame.

Thanks,
