Team USA to Wrestle Japan at UW Oshkosh

Fond du Lac, Wisconsin-On Tuesday March 16th, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh will host a very special event for the sport of wrestling. Select members of the Japanese National Wrestling Team will battle resident athletes of the United States Olympic Training Center in a rare International Dual Meet. Both freestyle and greco-roman matches will be conducted between the two countries as they wrestle for peace and friendship. Sponsoring the event will be United Parts Plus, Hopper's Screen printing and Larry Marchionda's World Class Wrestling School. United Parts Plus owner Chuck Curwick will serve as an honorary coach for Team Japan, while Marchionda will oversee the event. Marchionda states, "We are so excited to be able to host a wrestling event of this magnitude on our campus. This is a wonderful opportunity for area wrestlers and their families to watch wrestling at a world/Olympic level right here in the Fox Valley"!

The United States Team will be coached by Wisconsin Wrestling legend Dennis Hall, who is a former three time USA Olympian and 1995 World Champion. Hall, who currently is the Head Coach of the Olympic Training Center for Greco-Roman Wrestling at Northern Michigan University, will also speak to the public prior to the event. The Japanese Team is led by Dr. Yoshimara Yanagawa, who attended high school and wrestled for Marchionda at Fond du Lac-Goodrich High School. He is currently a professor and Head Coach at Gunma University, and is excited to return to the Fox Valley area.

The dual meet will take place at Albee Hall, located on Algoma Blvd. in Oshkosh. Tickets are only available at the door and range in price from $4 for children/students, $6 for seniors and $7 for adults. Children 5 and under are free. The doors open at 5pm with Hall's speech to begin at 6pm, followed by an opening ceremony at 6:30pm and matches beginning at 7pm.

Approximately ten Freestyle and Greco-Roman matches will be contested throughout the evening. UW-Oshkosh Head Coach Mike DeRoehn, who also serves as the State Coach for Team Wisconsin, excitedly agreed to bring the event on campus. "This is a great way to kick off the freestyle/greco season in Wisconsin. These guys will bring a level of technique and intensity to the gym that is rarely seen by most wrestling fans. This is a "can't miss" event for local wrestlers and fans.

Questions about the event can be directed to Larry Marchionda by calling 920-922-9066 or email larry@wcwusa.com
