NCAA DIII Nationals Day One Round Up | Nate Woelfel | 3-11-2016

Seven Wisconsin teams were represented as the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships got underway Friday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Four of the Badger state’s 21 qualifiers earned All-American status with a pair of wins.

Read on for a team-by-team break down.

Concordia: Both of the Falcons’ wrestlers were eliminated on the opening day.

Pierce Holtfreter (157) lost both of his matches by decision, while Mason Baumgartner (197) was 1-2 on the day. His lone win came against Devon Carrilllo of Wesleyan (CT) by a count of 10-8 in the first round of consolation action.

Lakeland: The Muskies’ lone qualifier, Eddie Terres (197), dropped both of his matches and was eliminated form tournament.

UW-Eau Claire: Nathaniel Behnke (141) assured himself All-American status with a pair of wins on Day 1. He topped Alvontae Drummond (McDaniel) 5-1 in the opening round. Behnke followed that up with a 9-5 win over Allen Henle (St. John’s, Minn.) in the quarters.

Roy Munroe (149) lost both of his matches and was eliminated.

UW-La Crosse: Three of the Eagles’ five competitors are alive after the first two sessions.

Tyler Schneider (174) and Austin Cook (184) each achieved All-American status by winning both of their matches.

Schneider bested Jon Goetz (UW-Platteville) 3-2 in the opening round before topping Garrett Chase (Baldwin Wallace) by the same score in the quarters.

Cook won by major decision, 12-4, over William Gockel-Figge (New Yourk University) in the first round. Cook then edged Grant Wedepohl (UW-Platteville) 2-0 in the quarterfinals.

Dustin Weinmann (133) was 2-1 on the day.

After dropping his first match, he rallied for back-to-back wins. Weinmann defeated Sam Bennyhoff (Augsburg) 14-2 in the opening round of consolation action. He then dispatched Bryan Israel of Ithaca) 5-4 in the second round.

Ryan Weinmann (125) had a rollercoaster day, tallying a 2-2 record before being bounced from the tournament.

He won his preliminary bout against Asher Kramer (Brockport) by a 9-6 margin. He then fell in the first round of the championship bracket.

Weinmann bounced back with a 10-3 win over Andrew Roden (SUNY-Cortland) before falling in Consolation Round 2.

Clay Broze (285) was eliminated after posting a 1-2 record.

He fell in his lone match in the championship bracket, but rebounded with a 5-1 win over Zachary Gibson (St. Olaf) in Consolation Round 1.

A loss in his second consolation match forced Broze out of the tournament.

UW-Platteville: All five Pioneers were eliminated on Day 1.

Wedepohl and Cole Ferguson (125) were the only wrestlers from Platteville to tally wins.

Ferguson bested Brenden Velez (Deleware Valley University) 6-2 in their consolation match.

Wedepohl earned an 8-5 decision over Christopher Chorzepa (Williams College) in their first round bout.

Goetz, Mason Baum (149) and D’Andre Johnson (285) each went 0-2.

UW-Stevens Point: Logan Hermsen (165) earned All-American honors with two wins on the tournament’s opening day.

Hermsen garnered a 7-0 decision against Timothy Garripoli (Williams College) in Round 1. He then edged Ryan Vandall (Centrall, IA) 7-6 in the quarters.

The Pointers’ Ben Vosters (125) was 0-2.

UW-Whitewater: Zac Denny (125) was the only one of the Warhawks’ four qualifiers to advance to Day 2.

Denny dropped his first match before beating Chris Tan (Ursinus) and Bobby Jordan (Johnson and Wales) by scores of 11-6 and 6-3, respectively.

Tom Gerzewski went an even .500, but was eliminated. His two wins came against Benjamin Schweiger (Delaware Valley University) and Jeff Hojnacki (Messiah).

Gerzewski won 3-1 over Schweiger before topping Hojnacki 11-4. He lost his next matches.

Brandon Arteaga (157) earned one win in three matches. His lone triumph was a 4-2 win against  Nicholas Racanelli (Wilkes) 4-2 in the preliminary round.

Isaiah Vela (149) lost both of his matches.
