Malecek wins, capping wrestling event at St. Croix Central

The smile on Marcus Malecek’s face said everything that needed to be said.
Malecek made the return to his home high school an incredible success on Saturday. Malecek and his Air Force Academy wrestling teammates earned a 29-3 win over a nationally-ranked UW-La Crosse team, 29-3.
The match was arranged by UW-La Crosse coach Dave Malecek and Air Force coach Sam Barber. Coach Malecek is Marcus’ uncle. He came up with the idea of holding the match at St. Croix Central last spring. The Air Force team could only make it happen if the Falcons could schedule a match with the Minnesota Gophers on the same weekend. The Falcons and Gophers scheduled a match for Saturday night, making it possible to hold this match Saturday morning.
“Dave was awesome in making this happen,” Marcus said. “I’ve been working toward this day ever since I heard it could happen.”
Marcus said he was incredibly excited to be able to compete in front of his home fans once more. The feeling was mutual. There was a huge crowd, well above 600 people. This was especially a great turnout considering the match was scheduled the morning of the deer hunting opener.
When the match was completed, there was a long line of family and friends who waited to get their chance to congratulate Marcus.
The wrestling match itself might have seemed secondary to the celebration, but it wasn’t to the wrestlers. Air Force is an NCAA Division 1 program and UW-La Crosse is a nationally-ranked NCAA Division 3 program, so there some outstanding matches. Malecek’s match was the final bout of the morning, facing La Crosse freshman Clay Broze. Malecek wrestled a smart tactical match, winning 7-3.
Malecek said he wouldn’t let the excitement of the day overshadow the wrestling match.
“This is a business trip and I came here to take care of business,” Malecek said.
Malecek wasn’t the only local wrestler competing Saturday. Ellsworth native Parker Hines is a junior on the Air Force squad. Hines was also a winner, manhandling UW-La Crosse senior Zach Tooley 16-5.
An intermission was held during the middle of the match. At that point, each of the local wrestlers went to the center of the mat, along with their high school coach. After a biography of each wrestler was read, they were showered with a rousing ovation.
There will be honorary captains who will be honored as part of Saturday’s event. The captain for the Air Force team will be 2013 St. Croix Central graduate Delfino Carrasco, who is serving in the U.S. Army.
