(Iowa City, IA) In another power Big Ten matchup, No. 16 Wisconsin headed to Carver-Hawkeye Arena to square off against No. 3 Iowa. The Badgers, on a four match losing streak, hoped to pull off the upset against their conference foe. Unfortunately, the Badgers were unable to stop the red hot Hawkeyes, winning only two matches resulting in a final score of 8-33.

“We’re going through a tough stretch, but we’re at where we’re at,” Head Coach Barry Davis said.

No. 2 Connor Medbery was the first to score a victory for the Badgers, picking up a 16-1 tech fall against Faraan Brantley at 285 lb. Brantley was in the lineup for the injured Sam Stoll, who usually holds down the heavyweight spot for the Hawkeyes. Stoll is reportedly out for the remainder of the season. Medbery’s five team points put the Badgers down by only four (9-5) heading into the lightweight matches.

No. 3 Isaac Jordan picked up the only other victory for Wisconsin, in the penultimate match of the evening in thrilling fashion over Joey Gunther. Jordan and Gunther battled it out during regulation, each tallying an escape leaving the score knotted at 1. Zeke was able to secure the victory in the first overtime period, getting the takedown for the 3-1 decision, making the score 8-29 with one match to go.

Hunter Ritter started out the night for the Badgers at 184 lb., looking for the upset against defending Big Ten Champion and All American No. 5 Sammy Brooks. Ritter battled through the first period, but found himself in a Brooks cradle ending the match at 4:54. This gave the Hawkeyes an early 6-0 lead.

Mason Reinhardt was in the lineup at 197 lb. for the Badgers, giving Ricky Robertson a rest. Reinhardt faced off with Cash Wilcke. Wilcke held Reinhardt to only one escape, securing a close 3-1 decision, extending the Hawkeye lead to 9-0.

Four Time Wisconsin State Champion Jens Lantz had the most daunting task of the night taking on No. 1 two-time All American Thomas Gillman at 125 lb. Lantz allowed one bonus point, dropping a 21-8 major decision, and the team score moved to 13-5.

Eli Stickley took on Phillip Laux at 133 lb. Laux originally committed to Wisconsin, but ended up in Iowa City. Stickley opened the match with a takedown, but was unable to keep momentum. Laux, in his first career start inside Carver-Hawkeye, picked up the 6-2 decision, adding to the Hawkeye lead, 16-5.

The 141 lb. bout featured a ranked matchup between No. 16 Cole Martin and No. 17 Topher Carton. Carton defeated Martin 9-1, picking up another bonus point win for the Hawkeyes, extending their lead to 15.

Andrew Crone also had a tough task at 149 lb. facing All American and NCAA Runner-Up No. 4 Brandon Sorensen. Crone started out slowly and picked up steam late, eventually dropping a 9-5 decision. This put the Badgers chances of executing an upset out of reach, bringing the score to 23-5 with only three matches to go.

Jared Scharenbrock was in the lineup at 157 lb. for TJ Ruschell. Scharenbrock took on No. 2 Michael Kemerer. Kemerer wasted no time, securing a fall in 55 seconds, when Scharenbrock attempted a roll. The score moved to 29-5.

Ryan Christensen closed out the night at 174 lb. against All American No. 11 Alex Meyer. Christensen picked up three escapes, allowing a major 11-3. This brought the final score to 8-33, and handed the Badgers their fifth conference loss.

“We’ve got to go back tomorrow and get back in the weight room and move forward to get ready for Purdue next Friday,” Barry Davis said.

The Badgers will hope to end their losing skid this Friday when they head to Purdue. They return home to the fieldhouse Sunday the 12th at noon against Michigan.
