(Madison, WI) Two of the sixteen wrestlers entering the WIAA Individual Wrestling State Tournament undefeated faced each other in what was thought of as a semifinal matchup of epic proportions. Jaden Van Maanen (Sr) of La Crosse Central and Jacob DeMeyer (Jr) of Rhinelander both entered the semifinal round with unblemished records at 145 lb. (47-0 and 42-0 respectively entering the match).
Van Maanen, a returning state champion at 132lb., made the jump from 132 to 145 this season. He boasts a 45-0 record while DeMeyer boasts a 40-0 record. One of these athletes was going to head to the finals still unbeaten, and the other was heading to the backside to fight his way through for third. For Van Maanen, he wasn’t fazed.
“I keep the same mindset every match,” Van Maanen said.
In the end, it was Van Maanen who kept his record clean. Van Maanen, a North Dakota State University commit, made surprisingly easy work of DeMeyer, claiming a 10-1 major decision. However, just because he remains unbeaten doesn’t mean his path to his second state title is clear. He will face University of Wisconsin commit Garrett Model (Sr/46-5) of Stoughton tomorrow in the finals.
“I’m just gonna get ready, get focused in my head. Get a good warm up in. Same game plan as every match,” Van Maanen said about his showdown with Model.
Finals begin inside the Kohl Center an hour earlier than usual Saturday. The march of champions is pegged to begin at 5pm.
