UW-Whitewater named Scholar Team, Tom Trieloff named Scholar All-American
Written: Katie DeLong Date: March 8, 2007

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater was named one of the top twenty National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Scholar Teams and UW-Whitewater wrestler Tom Trieloff was named to the NWCA Division III Scholar All-American Team last weekend during the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.

UW-Whitewater is seventeenth on the list of Division III Top Twenty Scholar Teams with a grade point average of 3.220 out of 4.0. In order to make the list, teams must have at least six out of their top 10 regular lineup receiving high enough GPA's to earn a spot. There are 96 wrestling teams in Division III.

UW-Whitewater wrestler Tom Trieloff (so., Janesville/Craig) made the Division III Scholar All-American Team in the 149 pound weight class. In order to qualify, players must have a winning record, must be in the top four in the conference or qualifying tournament, must have wrestled in at least half of the team's competitions, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.2. Trieloff's record for the 2007 was 13-8 and he had one pin and was pinned once. Trieloff's fastest pin was 1:50.

UW-Whitewater Sends Two to NCAA III
Sun 02/18/07 07:46 PM

LA CROSSE, WI- Bautista and Schmidt Advance to NCAA III Championship, Warhawks Third

Austin Bautista and Mike Schmidt earned a spot in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Wrestling Championship, and UW-Whitewater finished third in the team standings at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship Sunday in La Crosse.

Bautista (freshman, Des Plaines, Ill.) and Schmidt (junior, Menomonee Falls/Hartford) both finished second in their weight classes at the WIAC tournament, and both were at-large selections to the NCAA III championship. The WIAC tournament is a qualifier for the national meet, with the ten weight class winners earning automatic entry in to the NCAA III meet, but the WIAC is also allocated nine additional at-large contestants based on the league's success at the national level. Bautista, 27-12 at 149 pounds, and Schmidt, 20-7 at 197, will be making their first national tournament appearance. The NCAA III championship is March 2-3 in Dubuque, Iowa.

Whitewater's Derrik Johnson, the runner-up at 285 pounds, was named the third alternate for the WIAC. That means that if any of the nineteen wrestlers, including weight class winners and at-large picks, cannot make participate in the NCAA III championship the league is allowed to send an alternate. The league designates a first, second and third alternate.

In addition to the runnerup finishes by Bautista, Schmidt and Johnson, Tom Trieloff and Karl Voeck finished third in the WIAC championship. Trieloff (sophomore, Janesville/Craig) went 3-1 in the tourney and finished the year 13-8. Voeck (junior, Madion/Memorial) was also 3-1 Sunday, finishing the season 22-17. Also noteworthy, senior Adam Moe (Burlington) recorded his nineteenth pin of the season in the WIAC tournament, tying the sixth highest single season total in the school record book. Moe now shares sixth place with John Pecora (1984-85) and Carmelo Flores (1979-80). Moe wound up his senior year with a 27-12 record.

UW-Whitewater has finished among the top twenty in the national championship nineteen times in school history, most recently in 1991. The high water mark for the program was a fourth place finish in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship in 1975.

Team scores were UW-La Crosse 152.5, UW-Stevens Point 114.5, UW-Whitewater 96, UW-Eau Claire 89.5, UW-Platteville 76, UW-Oshkosh 62, and Lawrence University 53.5. La Crosse has won ten consecutive WIAC team championships. UW-Whitewater also finished third in the 2006 championship.
