UW Whitewater Outlook

Warhawk Wrestling
Tue, 4 Feb 2003

Good Morning Everyone!

Just a quick update as to what has happened in the past week or so. On Tuesday, the Warhawks went up to UW-LaCrosse and lost 9 out of the 10 matches, it was a rough one, but with a team that is so young, a little beat up, and sick against the #4 team in the nation, we gave it everything we had. On Friday, the newest member of the WIAC, Lawrence University, came to the Williams Center. Final Score, UW-W 20 Lawrence 15. It was a very exciting match that was broadcasted on Cable. Coming up on Friday and Saturday of this week is the Wheaton Tournament. Many of you know of or have wrestled in this tournament which is known as one of the toughest tournaments in the nation. The tentative starting lineup is:

125 John Rombca
133 Mike Jankowski
141 Nick Karls
149 Ross Babcock
157 Tony Wright
165 No Entry Jason Krueger (injured)
174 Adam Moe
184 Drew Hamel
197 Rob Youngsma or Mason Wood
285 Brian Mingus or Dave Berglund

The following week holds the end of the regular season for the Warhawks including UW-Platteville at Platteville on Tuesday and the final dual of the season at home versus UW-Eau Claire. Everyone is invited and there will be a get together afterwards. Please lets have a great showing on Valentine's Day to support the Warhawks as they head into the conference qualifier!

Have a great week...and let us know if you need anything.

New Form of Keeping in Touch

The UWW Wrestling Update is a new thing for the Warhawks. We’re going to be sending this out to keep our loyal fans and the wrestling world in touch with what’s going on this season. We’ll up date after every dual and tournament with results and highlights. If you’d like to receive this update by e-mail please e-mail us at  Warhawk_Update@yahoo.com . Hope you all enjoy.

New Freshman Look Promising

With a new season already starting up and duals just around the corner, the team is working harder and harder everyday to become the best wrestlers they can be.  For the incoming freshman, it can be a difficult thing to adjust to with the stress of college life on their shoulders. However, the freshman wrestlers are handling this adjustment with great effort. Everyday you can see them improving and growing to become better wrestlers. It’s already noticeable that all these new recruits are going to make the Whitewater team stronger and more efficient than before. We’ve got some great new comers on our hands including Mike Elsbury, Jon Brown, Eric Verbeten, Marcus Hinkle, Adam Moe, Joey Potter, Arik Grundahl, John Papiernik, Joe Rabaglia, Scott Piché, Drew Hamel, Chris Patterson, and Zac Schackner. The freshman in addition to the great returning letter winners we have should make for a fun and successful wrestling season.

Up Coming Events

With the season underway, it’s time to start thinking about our upcoming duals and events for the season. Practices have been going on for about 4 weeks now preparing the guys for action. We kick off the dual season with a home dual against Elmhurst/Wabash on November 26, 2002 at 6:00. Then we start our seven event away stand starting with a dual against Wheaton/ Missouri Baptist. After that we have the Wisconsin Open at Parkside and a dual against UW-Oshkosh/ MSOE. Come out and support your Warhawk Wrestling team.

New Captains Make Team Stronger Than Ever

A new season means new captains.  Senior Dave Berglund, sophomore Ross Babcock, and senior Jeff Zastrow are heading the team and trying to pull them together for a successful year. Hard practices, after practice chats, and team dinners are all helping to bring the team together both mentally and physically. “In order to have a successful team, they have to know each other both on the mat and off”, says one of this year’s captains Dave Berglund. Ross Babcock agrees with, “Knowing all the guys helps us point out where they could improve and strengthen their technique.” All the captains are keeping the guys focused and determined. Jeff Zastrow says, “With a focused and determined team, there’s no end to what we can achieve.” It’s looking like a great season has already begun in the practice room. Look for the Warhawks to achieve great things this season.
