715-346-4184 Greetings Pointer Wrestling Fans;
A lot has happened with Pointer wrestling since our last e-mail. UWSP finished
the dual meet season with a 9-8 record and a 5-1 WIAC record. The Pointers
battled two tough and highly ranked teams to close matches. First the team
dropped a heartbreaker to conference power UW-LaCrosse. The dual came down to
the final match between All-American Mike Hayes for UWSP and 2-time National
Champion Ryan Allen. That match ended with Allen scoring a takedown in overtime
to defeat Hayes and give LAX the victory. But, the Pointers proved they can
compete with the best as LaCrosse was ranked #5. Also showing they can compete
at that level, the Pointers dropped a 25-12 match to #2 ranked Augsburg college.
Victories for the Pointers came from 125 lber Jake Calhoun, 197 lber Mitch
Szwet, and HWT Mike Hayes. Joel Burdick dropped and overtime match at 141 while
Al Stacilauskas and Jon Burdick both had one point losses at the end of
regulation.
The Pointers are now preparing for the WIAC Championships which will be held at
UW-Eau Claire on Sunday, Feb. 19. Wrestling will begin at 10:00 AM in the McPhee
Physical Education Center. We hope that many of you will be able to come support
UWSP in their quest for the conference championship. This will also serve as the
qualifying tournament for the National Championships to be held in Ewing, NJ.
If you are not able to attend, Fox Sports North (FSN) will be televising the
championships by tape delay. Check your local listings for times.
Finally, we are pricing a bus trip to The College of New Jersey for the NCAA’s.
We hope to have a cost soon. Please let me know if you would be interested in
riding a bus to nationals to support the Pointers.
Thanks for your support.

Greetings Pointer Wrestling Fans:
The Pointers have been busy over the last part of break and early this semester.
Most recently the team hosted UW-Parkside in a thrilling victory. UWSP fell
behind early by the score of 19-6, but with a late rally of the upper weights
the Dawgs pulled out a big 22-19 win. The surge at the end started with major
decision by Cody Koenig at 174 and was followed by a huge pin at 184 by Craig
Bollig (Verona). Freshman Mitch Szwet (Coleman) scored a big victory as well at
197. Mitch used intensity and superior conditioning to defeat seasoned veteran
John Goral. In the final match, HWT Mike Hayes secured the dual meet victory
with a last second takedown to win his match. Other wins for the night were by
David Davila at 125 & Joel Burdick at 141. Complete results can be found at:

Prior to that dual the Pointers traveled to Cleveland, OH to compete in the NWCA
National duals. Entering the competition, the Pointers battled to an 8th place
finish. After dropping the first match to The College of New Jersey (ranked 7th)
the Pointers picked up wins again Case Western Reserve and #8 ranked John
Carroll. In the second day UWSP didn’t fare as well losing to UW-La Crosse (#4)
and Ithaca College (#6). Complete results and brackets can be viewed at:

Another wrestling season is upon us. The team has officially started practice
and things are going well. The boys have done a lot to be ready for the
beginning of the season and it is showing. There is strong leadership in the
room from Cody Koenig, David Davila, Joel Burdick, and Ed Wynimko. Our first
competition is just around the corner, the Pointer Open, on November 13th at
UWSP. Then we’ll travel to Michigan for the Comet Duals and a chance to compete
against some Eastern teams.
Our first Takedown club mailing has gone out, so if you did not receive a

Finally, it was great to see such a tremendous turn out for the Hall of Fame

Greetings Pointer Wrestling Fans:
The school year has started and everyone is back ready to go. We are looking
forward to the beginning of the 2004-05 season. The summer was eventful in many
ways. Ken Chertow held a successful camp on our campus this summer and has
planned to return next summer. Alumni coaches Bob Berceau and Tom Weix brought
many of their team members and participated as clinicians. Several current
Pointers assisted in the camp as well. We also had a chance to see Dennis Hall
win the Olympic Team trials in a match that will go down in USA Wrestling
History. Dennis went on to compete in his 3rd Olympics in Athens, Greece.
Unfortunately Dennis lost one match in his pool and was eliminated. But, we
congratulate him on a tremendous career.
As we head into this year we are excited to add Yan White, Brady Holtz and Jared
Esala to our coaching staff. We also add many newcomers to the room including,
but not limited to Eric Bath (Pulaski), Mitch Szwet (Coleman), Chase DeCleene
(Ashwaubenon), Antonio Narvaez (Kenosha), and Al Stacilauskus (Central

Subject: Dennis & GolfHey All:
Just a couple of things to pass on. First, if you haven’t heard, Dennis Hall
made his 3rd Olympic Team in dramatic fashion on May 23rd. He defeated former
training partner and Olympic team mate Brandon Paulson 2 of 3 matches. Their
final match was an historic 16:54 long. Dennis scored on a takedown going out of
bounds to secure his spot on the team. This is the first time Dennis and Brandon
had ever wrestled because Dennis had always been a weight class above. Dennis’
decision to drop to 55kg. (121 lbs) was not an easy decision, but has put him on
track to reach his goal of an Olympic Gold medal. We wish Dennis the best in
Greece!! The Olympic team trials will be televised on Saturday, June 5th at 9:00
AM on the USA Network.
Secondly, again I’m reminding you all of our upcoming 2nd Annual Pointer
Wrestling Golf Outing at Tree Acres Golf Course. We are working hard to build
this event to make it a good time for everyone and help the team raise money for
their trip to the National Duals. The golf outing is Saturday, June 19th with a
shotgun start at 12:00 noon. The cost is $80.00/person. This includes golf,
cart, and dinner, which will be served at 6:00 PM. The fee also includes
beverages for the post golf social. There will also be a raffle with prizes
including a full set of custom made irons retailing at $300. Please respond soon
if you plan on attending.

Greeting Pointer Wrestling Fans:
We are nearing the end of the academic year and recruiting is starting to wind up. We hope to publicize a complete list of future Pointer wrestlers soon, but I’d like to recognize just a few who have committed to UWSP for next year. The follow student/athletes have made a verbal commitment to come to UWSP and wrestle next season: Eric Bath-160 (Pulaski), Chase DeCleene-130 (Ashwaubenon), Ken Duren-152 (Warrenton, MO), Jake Haley-125 (Wilmot), & Mitch Szwet-189 (Coleman).
Secondly, we had two Pointer Wrestlers recognized this weekend at the College of Health, Exercise Science, & Athletics banquet. Yan White was awarded the UWSP Individual Sport Athlete of the Year for the second time. And, former Pointer National Champion Bob Berceau was recognized for his coaching excellence. We are very proud of both Yan and Bob.
Finally, this is a reminder that the 2003-04 Pointer Wrestling Awards picnic is coming up soon. It will be held at Pfiffner Park in Stevens Point on Saturday, May 1. Cost to attend is $15 which includes lunch and beverage. Attached is the invitation letter that all alumni, parents, and Takedown club members should have received. Please mark your calendars and plan on helping celebrate a fine season of Pointer Wrestling.

Hello Pointer Wrestling Fans:
The 2003-04 wrestling season has come to an end. The Pointers finished the year
in 9th place at the NCAA tournament. All three returning All-Americans from last
year earned All-American status again this year. Brady Holtz finished his career
at UWSP as a 2-time NCAA All-American finishing 6th in 2003 & 2004. He was a
two-time WIAC Champion winning his first during his freshman year. Junior 174
pounder Cody Koenig finished 4th making him a 2X All-American. Cody was the
returning National Champion at this weight, but was unsuccessful at defending
his title. At 197 Yan White place 2nd for the second time making him only 2nd
Pointer in UWSP history to compete in the National finals three years in a row.
Yan finished his career at UWSP with a 103-15 record winning a national title in
2002 and finishing 2nd in 2003 & 2004. He was a 3X WIAC Champion earning the
Outstanding wrestler award twice. Complete results for the NCAA tournament can
be found at:
http://depts.loras.edu/sports/2004NCAAWrestling/index.html
The WIAC was represented well at the National tournament by returning with 10
All-Americans.
Now that the season is over, the Pointer wrestling staff will be focusing on
recruiting. We are very excited about the direction of the program and many
young athletes in the room.
To recognize the accomplishments of our team we will holding our annual awards
picnic on Saturday, May 1st, 2004. Takedown club members and alumni watch your
mail for an invitation letter to the picnic. If you have questions regarding the
picnic, please contact the wresting office at 715-346-4184 or e-mail;

Subject: Pointer Wrestling Update
Date: Wed, 19 Nov 2003 10:54:27 -0600
Hello Pointer Wrestling Fans:
We are moving into our 3rd week of competition and the Pointer wrestlers are
working hard to make improvements. The Pointer Open was held on November 8th at
the Multi-Activity Center. The tournament saw some disappointments and some
positive performances. We crowned two champions, both at 174. Cody Koenig
capture the gold division championship while Verona freshman Craig Bollig won
the silver division championship. Other placers included: Gold division- 125
David Davila (2nd), 149 Matt Lapinski (5th), & 197 Yan White (2nd). Silver
division- 141 Kyle Mueller (5th), 174 Josh Ison (3rd), 184 Dustin Robinson
(4th), & 197 Justin McAuly (3rd). Unfortunately the Pointer suffered a few
injuries, but none serious. Yan White injury defaulted in the finals as did
Jared Esala in the 2nd round. Both are expected to be back soon. Complete
results can be found on our web page at:
http://www.uwsp.edu/athletics/wrestling/index.htm
Cody Koenig was also name WIAC Athlete of the week for his performance at the
Pointer Open.
We then traveled to Minneapolis for the Auggie open at Augsburg. Again the
Pointers suffered a few setbacks. Junior Cody Koenig saw his record win streak
snapped at 43 when he dropped a 5-3 match in the finals to #3 ranked Joe Moon of
Augsburg. On the positive side the Pointers place several wrestlers. Those
include: Gold division- Koenig 2nd (174), Joel Burdick 8th (149), Ed Wynimko 6th
(165), & Justin McAuly 8th (197). Silver division- Jason Callin 4th (149), Matt
Lapinski 6th (149), & Ryan Hansen 5th (157). Complete results can be found at:
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/wrestling/0304statistics/2003auggieopen/2003home.htm
The Pointers will head to Mequon this weekend to compete in the Concordia Open.
This will be our last open before we begin the dual meet season. The Pointers
will open the dual meet season at home on December 2nd with Lakeland College.
That match will be at 6:00 PM in Quandt Fieldhouse. The next dual will be
against conference rival UW-La Crosse on December 9th at 7:00 PM in Berg Gym. We
hope to see many of you there.
*Note due to a facility conflict, the time of our dual against UW-Whitewater on
Jan. 31st has been moved to 3:00 PM in Berg Gym.
Finally, thanks for all of your support and please continue to visit our web
page as we will be updating results and making additions. We hope to soon have
wrestler profiles, more pictures, and Pointer Wrestling merchandise for sale.

Wrestling Program
Actor Billy Baldwin has asked the wrestling community for help in saving
varsity wrestling at his alma mater, Binghamton University. Please
forward the information below to your e-mail contacts to assist his
efforts.
----------
Gang,
Attached is the letter that I sent to Binghamton University President
Lois DeFleur regarding the termination of the varsity wrestling program.
I NEED YOUR HELP!!!
Please write a letter or email expressing your love for the sport, what
it means to you, and/or the ways in which you and thousands of others
benefit from the great sport of wrestling.
It doesn't have to be long, just a few paragraphs. To make it easier,
you can use my letter as a template.
THIS DECISION IS NOT FINAL! This is a recommendation of the Athletic
Director Joel Thirer. President DeFleur has announced that she is taking
this recommendation under advisement and my contacts inside the
university lead me to believe that she is leaning in the direction of
termination. She has announced the Athletic Director's recommendation
publicly to quote "float a trial balloon" and see what type of reaction
this decision receives.
LET'S LET HER KNOW! This program costs the university only $160,000
annually while the overall Athletic Department budget exceeds $6 million
dollars. That constitutes less than 3 percent of the Athletic Department
budget annually.
If you are an alumni, include that in your letter/email.
If you are a wrestler, include that in your letter/email.
If you have endowed the University, include that in your letter.
If you are an NCAA All American, include that in your letter.
If you are an Olympian, Olympic or World Medalist, include that in your
letter.
As you know, Title IX has decimated the ranks of College Wrestling. If
Binghamton is terminated, we will now have the number of Division I
wrestling programs reduced from 220 plus to just over 80 programs
nationally.
Wrestling needs your help. Please take the time to help reverse this
decision and save the wrestling program at Binghamton University. We
have to stop the bleeding!
For those of you not familiar with the program, my letter may serve as a
guide to provide you with some of the details.
THIS IS A TIME SENSITIVE ISSUE! I'M TOLD THE PRESIDENT WILL MAKE THIS
DECISION FINAL IN THE NEXT MONTH. WE NEED TO MAKE SURE SHE HEARS FROM
ALL OF US IN THE NEXT WEEK OR TWO. AGAIN, PLEASE TAKE THE TIME.
If you have prominent contacts in your email database or anywhere else,
please forward this information to them, and encourage them to take
action too.
SECRETARY OF DEFENSE RUMSFELD AND HOUSE SPEAKER HASTERT HAVE ALREADY
AGREED TO WEIGH IN (NO PUN INTENDED) ON THIS TOPIC WITH PRESIDENT
DeFLEUR.
Thank you for your help. Please don't wait to take action. We can't
afford to lose another program.

Dear Lois,
I was extremely surprised and dismayed upon learning of the recent
recommendation of Director Thirer to you to discontinue the thirty-three
year varsity wrestling program at Binghamton. As you know first hand
from our conversations and interactions, my love, caring and loyalty for
the University runs deep, and those emotions are integrally entwined
with the wrestling program. I owe much to the education I received at
Binghamton and it has certainly played a big part in the success in my
career. A great deal of that education was garnered as a member of the
wrestling team, and it is for this reason that it is difficult to
express the extent of my disappointment.
Understanding that New York State, the University, and the athletic
programs are experiencing a fiscal downturn, and means must be found to
deal with that reality, I cannot believe that dropping a program that
has had such a successful history and rich tradition is a prudent or
smart recommendation. If this recommendation is adopted, there will be
hundreds of Binghamton alumni upset and angry, as well as others from
across NYS and the nation. I urge you to consider the cost vs. benefit
to the University of this potential action (especially considering that
this accounts for less than 3% of the overall athletic department
budget.)
New York State is a national hotbed for high school wrestling. There are
556 high schools in NY sponsoring varsity wrestling programs, more than
any other state in the nation. With only six public four-year colleges
in the State currently sponsoring this sport, Binghamton enjoys a strong
market position in competing with schools such as Cornell and Buffalo
for the best and brightest of these young people. Despite the fact that
the America East Conference does not sponsor wrestling, the opportunity
is there for Binghamton to have a nationally prominent Division I
wrestling program, the money to be saved by moving forward with Director
Thirer's recommendation does not represent a good business decision.
As you know, I have always answered the call when asked to be a
spokesperson, representative or fundraiser for Binghamton University.
Most recently, I was asked to serve on a committee of alumni from NYC to
lead a fund raising effort for the new Events Center. I cannot imagine
this venue without varsity wrestling. It is a sport with a great and
noble history; one that has been decimated by Title IX over the past two
decades. We cannot afford to lose another program!
Wrestling is one of the few sports that instill the values of work
ethic, mental toughness and discipline. All of these gifts that have
transcended the sport and have served me well throughout my life, my
career and, most importantly, in my role as a husband and father.
Lois, I know this decision is not final. I hope you will reconsider and
allow this program, which has done so much for so many young men, to
continue. I am in California but will be back in New York next week. I
will give you a call. I hope we can discuss this further.
Warmest personal regards,
William Baldwin

Greetings Pointer Wrestling Fans:
The 2003-04 season is underway and we have had nearly 3 full weeks of practice.
The guys are working hard and look ready to go. We are excited about the

Greetings Pointer Wrestling Fans & Alumni:
We are nearing the end of the school year and it is time to review and
recognize our team's accomplishments. All the Takedown club members and
parent's were mailed and invitation to our Awards picnic this Saturday,
April 26th. If you plan on coming but haven't responded please do so
by calling the Pointer Wrestling office at 715-346-4184. This will help
us with a count for the food. If you have not received the invitation,
but would like to join us, please call the office as well. The cost
for the picnic is $15 per person. If you cannot make the picnic, but
would like to sponsor a wrestler, you can send the $15 donation to 117B
HEC, Stevens Point, WI 54481.
On another note, Dennis Hall will be stepping down from the Head
Assistant coaching position to concentrate on his training for the
Olympic team next year. Dennis will continue his work in the room as a
volunteer coach. The Pointers are fortunate and happy to welcome the
return of Jamie Hildebrandt to the UWSP wrestling program. Jamie, a
former conference champion, will take over the position of Head
Assistant coach for the 2003-04 season. As a member of 3 WSUC
Championship and 4 NCAA top ten teams, Jamie brings a lot of tradition
and a tremendous work ethic to the room. We look forward to having
Jamie back.
Other new faces to watch for will be incoming freshmen for the 2003-04
season. Currently we have 11 wrestlers who have committed to UWSP to
wrestle. Among those are, Chris Burger (Merrill), Craig Bollig (Verona),
Justin McAuley (Clintonville), Josh Ison (Antigo), Jason Barber (Port

Johnny,
We realize March 29 is the same day as the State Tournament for kids,
however we would like to have as many wrestlers from Wisconsin as
possible to be in attendance at the Dan Gable Rally for UW Oshkosh
wrestling. It will begin with a silent auction at 6:30 in the Kolf
Sports Center.
This is a history making event. Never before has a decision to
drop
wrestling been reversed in Wisconsin and
the voice of our wrestling community was responsible for the
reversal.
Now we must go for the PIN and that will
take a big turn out at this event. We will have the Chancellor
there
to welcome everyone he deserves a large
ovation for reversing his decision.
Please pass this information on to everyone involved in wrestling in
Wisconsin. Your presence will make a
statement to all the WIAC Universities about our great sport.

Greetings Pointer Wrestling Fans:
The UWSP returned home Sunday with the highest finish in Pointer Wrestling
history and it's first NCAA Div. III trophy. The Pointers finished 3rd in
the Nation behind Wartburg College and Augsburg College. Leading the Pointers
to their 3rd place finish were National Champions Cody Koenig (174) and Brad
Marten (184). All four national qualifiers came home with All-American status.
Brady Holtz (133) finished 6th and Yan White was the Runner-up at 197.
Several Pointer records were established this weekend. Cody Koenig became
the first Pointer wrestler to complete an undefeated season with his 36-0
mark. Additionally, the Pointers three finalists & two champions were the
most in UWSP history for an NCAA III tournament. The team's third place
finish was also the highest as were the 71 points amassed at the tournament.
The four All-Americans in one year tied the previous record.

EDUCATION SECRETARY PAIGE AND ATTACK HIS TITLE IX POSITION
In
a statement made through a spokesman on Feb. 26, Secretary of Education
Rod Paige has indicated that he will only consider the proposals
forwarded by the federal Title IX Commission that were passed
unanimously.
This
position would wipe out all of the work by the Commission on Opportunity
in Athletics to reform Title IX. THIS POSITION WOULD ALLOW FOR THE
CONTINUED ELIMINATION OF OLYMPIC SPORTS SUCH AS WRESTLING, SWIMMING,
GYMNASTICS, TRACK, BASEBALL AND OTHERS.
This
position would allow a few dissenting voices, led by quota advocates
Julie Foudy and Donna DeVarona, to throw out all of the ideas passed by
the Commission on Opportunity in Athletics that they did not agree with.

*
Paige has abandoned the Olympic sports community by insisting
that only unanimous recommendations by the Commission on Opportunity in
Athletics be considered.
*
This position will maintain the status quo, and will allow for
the continued discrimination. It will continue the loss of programs and
opportunities for Olympic sports such of swimming, wrestling, track and
field, gymnastics, baseball, and many more.
*
Nowhere in the American system is *unanimous* consent required.
It is not required to pass a law through Congress. It is not required
for Supreme Court decisions. The United States is based upon a majority
rules principle. A requirement of unanimous consent is un-American.
*
This will wipe out the work of the federal Title IX Commission.
It means the efforts of the entire Commission was a waste of their time,
and the Commission process was a waste of taxpayer money.
*
It allows only one dissenting voice to overrule the decision of
the majority of the Commission.
*
Two members of the Commission, Julie Foudy and Donna De Varona,
are biased and are leaders of a special interest group. They had their
minds made up before the hearings began. Their goal is stop any and all
changes to Title IX enforcement. By only reviewing unanimous proposals,
you give Foudy and De Varona veto power over the entire 15-member panel.
*
You have abandoned the campaign promises made by President Bush.
You have buckled to the pressure of a small but well-financed radical
group seeking to keep the status quo.

Greetings Pointer Wrestling Fans:
The UWSP wrestling team recently returned from the National Duals at The
Ohio State University. The team went 1-3, but wrestled tough against some
good teams. UWSP drew #1 Wartburg first round losing 27-10 with Brady Holtz,
Cody Koenig, and Yan White picking up wins for the Pointers. The Pointer
then dropped a hard fought match against conference rival UW-LaCrosse. The
score was tied and 15 going into the final match where #2 ranked Ryan Allen
of LAX pinned Mike Hayes. The Pointers collected wins from David Davila
(125), Brady Holtz (133), Cody Koenig (184), and a fall from Yan White (197).
LaCrosse is currently ranked #6 in the Nation while the Pointers are #23.
UWSP then went 1-1 in exhibition matches against #14 Lycoming and #19 Ohio
Northern. The Pointers lost to Lycoming and defeated Ohio Northern. Individually,
the Pointers had 3 wrestlers who returned with winning records. Cody Koenig
was 4-0 on the weekend, while Yan White and Brady Holtz returned with a 3-1
record. Brady's only loss was to Lycoming's #1 ranked Mike Waldren 12-8.
The Pointers returned to action last night losing a close match to UW-Whitewater
on criteria. The match score was 19-19 with Whitewater winning 6 of the
10 matches. The Pointers were missing starters Ed Wynimko and Yan White
due to injury. Junior Brad Marten made his debut as a Pointer winning with
a major decision at 197. Marten will compete at 184 for the Pointers after
transferring from UW-Madison.
Results from all matches can be found at: http://www.uwsp.edu/Athletics/wrestling/schedule.htm
UWSP's next match will be at home in Quandt gym on Wednesday, January 29

38-3. Cody Koenig was the Pointers only undefeated wrestler on the trip
pinning Dubuque's John Southworth in :36 seconds and defeating Wartburg's
#7 ranked Mark Sturm 8-3. Koenig moves to 16-0 on the season. In the night's
feature match against Wartburg, Yan White dropped a 3-0 decision to #2 ranked
