UW-Platteville defeated Lawrence University 34-12 in its home and
conference opener Wednesday, but another team was also a winner across the
globe.
Before the match, the Pioneers collected donated food, money and other
items in honor of Zach Chambers, a U.S. Marine serving in Iraq. Chambers,
from Mineral Point, was a conference champion as a freshman and 17-0 last
year before an injury ended his sophomore year. He was deployed over the
summer. "Fill a Sack for Zach" items filled two eight-foot tables in the
Williams Fieldhouse lobby. Fans and both teams gave to Chambers and his
fellow Marines.
Coach Chris Walter thanked the fans and teams before the match, as well as
introduced Aaron Coorough and Sean Shotliff, Pioneer wrestlers who served
overseas last year. The Platteville VFW provided a color guard for the
match.
The Pioneers then went out and improved to 2-0 on the young season.
Lawrence, a member of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
for wrestling only, was seeing its first action of the year.
Corey Binger (125) and Dane Droessler (133) started the match out with
pins, and after Dan Azarian (141) won by forfeit, Ryan Higgins (149) won
by technical fall for a commanding 23-0 lead. Peter Moe (174) also won by
a technical fall, and Ryan Rozek won by forfeit at 285.
The Pioneers return to action Saturday at the Olivet (Mich.) Duals, where
four of the five teams they face are nationally ranked.
Another group of UWP wrestlers will compete at the Concordia Open in
Mequon.

"Fill a Sack for Zach"
"Fill a Sack for Zach" night announced
Date: Fri 11/05/04 01:20 PM
UW-Platteville will salute one of its top wrestlers who is now serving his
country in Iraq while collecting items to send to overseas to him and his
troops during the Pioneers' season opener Nov. 17.
"Fill a Sack for Zach" night will be held in honor of Zach Chambers, a
junior from Mineral Point. His U.S. Marine Corps reserve company was
deployed in the summer. Chambers is a member of the Golf Company, 2nd
Battalion, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division, based out of Madison.
Fans are asked to bring letters and/or items suitable to send to the
Chambers and his fellow Marines to the first match.
Chambers was 48-4 during his first two years with 24 pins. He won the
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 133-pound championship as a
freshman in 2002-03 and was 17-0 last year before an injury halted his
season.
"Zach is a guy we could count on not to just win matches, but to score big
points," Pioneer Coach Chris Walter said. "Half of his wins were pins.
It's nice to have someone in your lineup like that who is not just going
to go out and win but get those extra points."
Chambers was also a fan favorite at Williams Fieldhouse for his aggressive
style of wrestling and his joyful enthusiasm. He is missed by his coaches
and teammates.
"It's definitely hard," Walter said. "I try not to think about it, but you
listen to the news and you wonder what's going on over there. No news is
good news. We just look forward to having him back."
Two Pioneers returned this season after serving in Iraq with the Wisconsin
Army National Guard's 229th Engineer Co., Platteville.
Sean Shotliff, a freshman from Belmont, and Aaroon Coorough, a senior from
Beloit, returned this spring.
"It's really good to get those guys back," Walter said.
Suggested items to bring include cards and letters, small non-perishable
food items, such as powdered drink mixes, granola bars, beef jerky, and
instant coffee. Other non-food items include zip-lock baggies, batteries,
things to read such as short story books, and foam mini-footballs or
basketballs. Personal items are also needed, such as small containers of
toothpaste and mouthwash, eye drops, baby wipes, and lotion.
"It's nice to have recognition for these guys and understanding of what
they go through," Walter said. "They've had their lives interrupted
academically, athletically, and personally. They are away from loved ones
for a long period of time. To serve the country is a huge commitment on
their part." Thursday, August 5, 2004

Thursday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m.
Seventh-year UW-Platteville Coach Chris Walter welcomes nine returning
lettermen, including a pair of conference champions, for the 2003-04
season.
Adam Anderson, who captured the 141-pound title at the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships, and Zach Chambers, who
won at 133 pounds, highlight the returnees. Anderson was 24-5 in his
junior season, while Chambers went 31-4 with a team-high 14 pins in his
freshman year.
Other returning lettermen are Kenny Francois (8-13 in 2002-03, 157
pounds), Jason Glodowski (1-8, 197), Ned Lease (3-14, 184), Mark Meyers
(7-2 before being injured, 157), Peter Moe (13-7, 174), William Slayton
(15-13, 165), and Dustin Wire (5-6, 133). A large group of promising
newcomers also figure to push for mat time.
The Pioneers are ranked 26th in the NCAA Division III preseason poll.
Walter has built the UW-Platteville program into one of the nation's top
wrestling programs in his six years as the head coach. He has coached 16
national qualifiers and four all-Americans. The former Badger captain has
a 53-29-2 career record, including an impressive 26-11 in the tough
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
