What’s New
-The Titans climbed the rankings up to the 27th spot.
Recent News
Titans lose a heartbreaker
Before the match with Stevens Point even began, the Titan’s head Coach Nick
Matiash told his wrestlers not to let anyone affect the outcome of the match.
Well the Titans couldn’t find a break on this night as they lost 20-19 to
the pointers. Jason Gruszynske got the Titans started with a 9-5 decision
over Logan McLennan. After the Pointers 5th ranked Cody Koenig defeated
Sean Fortmann, Nick Jasurda got the lead back for the Titans with his 10-5
decision over Brian Waldvogel. After the Pointers returning national champ
Yan White pinned Jed Lechleitner, Nathaniel Muckerheide had one of his closer
matches of the season by defeating Mike Hayes 5-3. The Titan’s found themselves
down 20-9 going into the last three matches. Luke Madson brought the deficit
to within 8 points after his 3-1 decision over Jon Burdick. Then when senior
co-captain Joel Dziedzic found himself down 5-0, he went on a 15-1 scoring
spree to record the major decision over Justin Geitner. That brought the
Titans to within four points going into the final match between Adam Dorner
and Ed Wynimko. If Dorner recorded a major decision the Titans would win,
as they owned the tiebreaker. Well with about 10 seconds left and Dorner
up by 5, he put Wynimko on his back but only got a four count for a two nearfall.
Dorner won the match 9-2 and got avenged an early season loss to Wynimko.
Division Two Parkside defeats Titans
At Parkside, the Titans found themselves in a big whole after losing their
first four matches all by decision. Jed Lechlietner, filling in for an injured
Mike Farchione, got the Titans out of that whole by pinning John Goral with
12 seconds left in the match. The Titans quickly tied the dual up after
Nathaniel Muckerheide received a forfeit. The Titans were down by six going
into the last match of the night, when Joel Dziedzic beat the Ranger’s Brad
Becker by decision. Parkside won the dual 18-15.
Titans win last dual of the year
The dual started with both teams trading forfeits at 125 and 133. Then Luke
Madson defeated Tony D'Antuono 12-1 and Joel Dziedzic made short work of
Dave Vanevenhoven to build a nine-point lead for the Titans. Eau Claire
countered with a couple of wins of their own to bring the dual to within
two points. Sean Fortmann got the Titans back on the board with a 7-1 decision
over Troy Seubert. Nick Jasurda followed it up with a 7-2 decision over
Josh Frie. After the Blugold’s 5th ranked Adam Kolo won by a major decision,
it was nearly impossible for the Blugolds to win, unless of course their
heavyweight Nick Campbell could find a way to pin Nathaniel Muckerheide.
Well Muckerheide put that to rest by winning 6-4. The Titans won 24-16.
Upcoming Events
The Titans travel to Eau Claire on Saturday to participate in the Eau Claire
Invite.
Coach’s Corner
Regrettably we lost the Stevens Point meet. However, I feel we out wrestled
them. We won 6 quality matches; they won 3 matches and received a forfeit.
Of course it is our fault that we could not submit a wrestler at 125 pounds,
however winning 6 out nine matches wrestled is nothing to feel bad about.
We lost another match against a very solid Parkside team. That night, there
were no easy matches. We lost some close ones, and even the matches we won
where hard fought quality matches. Our team looked good, but theirs was
very good. It was a good match up for us, and I look forward to wrestling
them again in the future.
Most recently we won a home meet against Eau Claire. Proving that often
you can improve more from your defeats than your victories, our team bounced
back better than ever. Some of the improvements are not so simple, and we
have just begun to turn some things around. After a solid week of practice,
this weekend should prove interesting as our team is starting to peak. This
week, we have also stayed away from the extensive amount of live wrestling
we normally do. Expect to see the Titans hungry for action at the Eau Claire
tournament.

One on One
This week’s one on one is with Luke Madson. Luke is a junior wrestling at
141 for the Titans. Luke is 15-9 on the season. Here is Luke Madson One
on One:
Q. Are you happy with your season so far?
A. The season is going pretty well for me this year, I lost a couple matches
earlier in the year that I thought I should've won but other then that things
are going well.
Q. How is the team looking heading into the conference tournament?
A. I think the team is looking great going into the conference meet. Everyone
has been working really hard in practice and I think it is really going to
show at conference.
Q. How fun is it to be Joel Dziedzic’s practice partner and what are the
benefits of it?
A. Hehe... some days it’s not fun at all, but most days are pretty fun.
Its great getting to work with a guy like Joel everyday in practice... he
has a lifetime's worth of wrestling knowledge and I know without a doubt
he has helped me an extreme amount this year, both on and off the mat.
Q. I understand you dad was in the latest issue of Muscle Magazine. Will
we find you in that magazine also?
A. lol... well maybe if they do a special on the UWO wrestling team ill
be on the cover.
Q. When you’re done with wrestling, what will you miss the most?
A. Definitely my teammates, they are the greatest bunch of guys I've met
since coming to school. I really cannot say enough about all of them.
Q. What are some of your hobbies outside of wrestling?
A. Well I’d like to say studying and doing homework, but more realistically
outside of wrestling I really enjoy working out and lifting. I also really
enjoy rollerblading and doing pretty much anything outdoors.
Q. Who has inspired you most in your wrestling career?
A. My dad has definatly been a great inspiration to me in wrestling and
everything else I do. Larry has been a great help to me in the past few years
at Oshkosh, and of course all my family and friends.
Q. What’s your major and what are some of your plans after college?
A. I'm a marketing major and I'm scheduled to graduate in dec. 2004... hopefully.
After that I am just looking to get a good job that I enjoy doing, hopefully
either around here or around my hometown of Clinton. Good luck and thanks
for your time.
What they’re saying…
(Joel Dziedzic, 149)… Luke is a great wrestler and person. He's a good guy
to have in the room to keep everyone smiling with his wise comments. He
works hard and has fun while doing it.
(Mike DeRoehn, Assistant Coach)… Luke is one of our team leaders both in
competition and in our practice room. He seeks out the tougher training
partners each day because he knows that is what it takes to improve. He
is very coach able, trains hard, and I believe he's in the running to win
a conference title this year.
(Nick Matiash, Head Coach)… Like almost any college wrestler, Luke has been
battling some bad habits this season. He has worked hard to develop good
skills, but sometimes reverts back to less effective moves during competition.
It is to looking like his time has come. He has been hitting a good first
move off the bottom and putting together offensive combinations on his feet.
He already moves very quickly. When he puts together an attack that combines
his quickness with a flurry of shots, it is quite effective.

Lakeland no match for Titans
In a dual which only six matches were wrestled, the Titans dominated the
visiting Muskies 34-15. The Titans won four of the six matches, all of which
were won by a major decision. Joel Dziedzic, Jason Gruszynske, Sean Fortmann,
and Nick Jasurda won by major decision. Luke Madson, Mike Farchione, and
Jeff Baker all won by forfeit.
La Crosse lives up to ranking
Going into Saturdays match with the 5th ranked Eagles, the Titans (9-3) knew
they were in for a battle. They had no idea they were only going to win
one match though. “I was anticipating that the score would be a lot closer.
Most of the team did wrestle well, but La Crosse won all of the close matches,”
said Head Coach Nick Matiash. The Titan’s Sean Fortmann began the dual by
facing the Eagle’s two-time defending WIAC Conference Champion Nick Patenaude.
Sean was in on many shot attempts but was unable to finish as Patenaude
recorded the only takedown to win the match 4-0. It didn’t get any easier
as Nick Jasurda had to go against 7th ranked Jason Lulloff. Lulloff also
recorded the only takedown to win the match 2-1. With the team score at
6-0, the Eagle’s Matt Morris who entered the match as the 6th ranked wrestler
in division three defeated Mike Farchione. Nathaniel Muckerheide recorded
his 13th pin of the year by pinning Deke Stanek in 1:34. Though that would
be all the Titans would get, they still offered some exciting matches. The
featured match was at 149 pounds where Joel Dziedzic and Troy Fabry squared
off. Both wrestlers entered the match with one win and one loss versus each
other. Dziedzic scored the first takedown of the match and was winning 3-1
going into the third period. Fabry scored a takedown to tie the match at
three, and quickly let Dziedzic escape with less than a minute to go. Fabry
then scored the winning takedown and held on for the 5-4 win. After the
dual was all said and done, the Eagles won 31-6. The dual was held at Fond
du lac high school and the Titan’s head coach Nick Matiash was happy with
the idea of having the meet at a local high school. “I think it was a good
thing. We have a strong high school wrestling presence in the Fox Valley
area,” stated Matiash. “By holding the meet at a high school, we were trying
to promote division III College wrestling to high school wrestlers. We will
be looking to find some more high schools that we can do the same thing at
in the future.”
Upcoming Events
The Titans travel to Stevens Point on Wednesday with the 12th ranked pointers.
Stevens Point has three ranked wrestlers. Cody Koenig is ranked 6th at
174 and Yan White is ranked first at 197. A week later they travel down
to Kenosha to take on Parkside, the 20th ranked team in division two. Parkside
has four ranked wrestlers in division two. Rob Jankowski is ranked 5th at
133, Brad Russell is 4th at 141, Rory Herring is 6th at 184, and Ryan Deprey
is ranked 7th at Heavyweight

One on One
This week’s one on one is with Nathaniel Muckerheide. Nathaniel is a sophomore
wrestling in the Heavyweight weight class. Muckerheide is 16-3 this year
with 13 pins. Here is Nathaniel Muckerheide, One on One:
Q. Are you happy with your season so far?
A. Yeah I’m happy with my season its going good for me right now, I just
have to keep going the way I’m going and I should be good.
Q. On Saturday you were the only Titan to win against Lacrosse. How did
this make you feel knowing that if you didn’t win it would have been a shutout?
A. I'm happy that we didn't get shut out, and I’m also proud of myself, but
if I had a chance to change things, it wouldn't bother me if our whole team
won and I was the only one to lose.
Q. How is this year’s team different from last years?
A. I think this year’s team has a lot more maturity and we are more focused
on winning. We haven't really lost anyone from last year and we also got
Joel back this year so that was a plus. We are more dedicated this year.
Q. Earlier this season you set the record for the fastest pin in UW-Oshkosh
history of 21 seconds. Was this the fastest of your career?
A. I have had a few pins in high school that were shorter than 21 seconds,
but the only one that really stands out in my had was my freshmen year in
high school against (teammate) Mike Farchione in 16 seconds.
Q. What are some of your hobbies outside of wrestling?
A. Things I like to do outside of wrestling are play video games, listen
to music and I’m starting to read biographies on sports people’s lives.
Q. Who has inspired you most in your wrestling career?
A. I would have to say my parents have inspired me the most in my wrestling
career. They are always there cheering me on and I don't think I could do
much of what I do with out them.
Q. What’s your major and what are some of your plans after college?
A. I am majoring in physical education right now considering changing that
to social work, a coaching minor and secondary education. Someday
I plan on coaching football somewhere or else helping young kids who need
help.
Good luck and thanks for your time.
What they’re saying…
(Adam Dorner, 157)… Muck has a talent and motor unlike anyone else on the
team while he is on the mat. He can push his opponent around and toss him
to his back when the team needs it most and I am very proud to have him on
our team.
(Jeff Baker, 133)… Muck is one of the most valuable wrestlers to this team.
He is a great teammate and friend.
(Nick Matiash, Head Coach)… I really like Muckerheide's style. He really
controls the match. His offense is his best defense because he keeps his
opponents on there
heals until they falter, then he capitalizes.

Titans go 2-1 in Indiana
The Titans went 2-1 at the Rose Hulman Institute duals in Indiana this
past Saturday. They blanked Rose Hulman 47-0 and defeated Olivet (Michigan)
23-19. The suffered their only loss to William Penn (Iowa). Nathaniel Muckerheide,
Luke Madson, and Joel Dziedzic all went 3-0 for the duals. Muckerheide
pinned all three of his opponents.
Titans pin Warhawks in dramatic fashion
If you attended the dual between Oshkosh and Whitewater and you didn’t
have a Titan card you had to pay to get in. That wasn’t a problem to Titan
fans as they got their money back, and then some. In front of a packed gym
the night started off as a nightmare for the Titans as they lost their first
four matches to fall behind 15-0. “When we were down by 15, admittedly I
was getting worried,” said Head Coach Nick Matiash. “All we could was to keep
trying to win each match as they come up and fortunately we still had enough
matches left to make up the points.” Then co-captain and senior Joel Dziedzic
turned things around when he pinned Ross Babcock. “Coach DeRoehn got me pumped
up before my match and told me how important it was to get out there, get
after my guy, pin him, and get our team on the board,” said Joel on his pin.
Adam Dorner followed Dziedzic with a 6-3 decision over the Warhawk’s Tony
Wright to bring the score to 15-9.
Whitewater would win their final match of the day at 165 pounds, and
it was all Titans after that. The guys from Mukwonago Sean Fortmann and
Nick Jasurda both dominated their opponents and received two points each
because of their opponents stalling technique. Fortmann’s relentless attack,
and Jasurda’s physical style of wrestling was too much for the exhausted Whitewater
wrestlers and tied the match at 18. “It bothered me that the kid kept blocking
me and stalling, but I knew that as long as I kept on him I would eventually
break him, and that is what happened,” stated Fortmann. “I really was not
worried about what he was doing, all I was concerned about was attacking
constantly, trying to tire my opponent out,” added Jasurda after his technical
fall. That led to the final match of the night and you couldn’t have scripted
it any better. In order for the Titans to win Mike Farchione would have
to beat Whitewater’s Mason Wood. Farchione wasted no time taking Wood down
and would go on to pin him in 1:50 to capture the win for the Titans.
The two teams wrestling styles were noticeably different. “The Whitewater
wrestling style is a style that commonly results in a close match. They
scored the majority of their take downs off of our shots,” said Matiash.
“We try to control the match with an active offense. It promotes more majors
and tech falls because you decide when you want to score,” added Matiash.
The Titans proved why they are much deserving of their ranking as they improved
their record to 6-1.
Titans too much for Raiders
Before the Titans defeated Whitewater, they had to wrestle the Milwaukee
School of Engineering. The Raiders were no match for the 30th ranked Titans
as they fell 35-12. Recording pins for the Titans were Adam Pearson, Jeff
Baker, and Joel Dziedzic. Also recording wins for the Titans were Luke Madson,
Adam Dorner, Sean Fortmann, and Nick Jasurda.
Upcoming Events
The Titans start the New Year at home on January 6th with the Titan Duals
at 4:00. The teams participating will be UW-Madison, Lakeland College, and
Harper College. Then on Saturday, January 11th Fond du lac High school will
be the host as the Titans face off against the fifth ranked team in the country,
UW-Lacrosse at 1:00.
One on One
This week’s one on one is with Sean Fortmann. Sean is a red-shirt sophomore
wrestling at 174 pounds. Sean’s win on Tuesday was crucial in the Titans
win over Whitewater.. Here is Sean Fortmann, One on One:
Q. After starting off not as well as you would have liked, do you feel like
you’re at where you want to be half way through the season?
A. I started off real bad and as of late I have been able to pick it up
a bit more. I still think, however that my best wrestling is yet to come.
I have lost a lot of close matches this year and I think that by the end
of the year I be coming out ahead in those matches.
Q. Is this team at where it needs to be half way through the season?
A. Yeah, I think so. We obviously have a couple issues that we have to
work out before the conference tournament, but right now were about where
we should be.
Q. The Titans are 3-0 in conference, what is this team capable of?
A. If we have a full team we are capable of doing anything. The coaches
have us believing in ourselves and in our team, and as long as we keep that
attitude the sky is the limit for us.
Q. You have a very high GPA and you could have gotten into almost any other
school. What made you decide to attend UW-Oshkosh?
A. I would have to say that when coach Marchionda came here I thought it
would be an excellent opportunity for me. I have gotten into the starting
line-up quicker here also. UWO also has an excellent education program,
which is what I want to do when I get out of college.
Q. What are some of your hobbies outside of wrestling?
A. I really enjoy just hanging out with my friends. I enjoy swimming a
lot too. I have also been active coaching both youth football and wrestling
back in my hometown of Mukwonago.
Q. Has the loss of your father last year affected your wrestling career
at all?
A. I think my dad dying last year has really showed me that life is short
and you have to make the best of the time that you have. I think I have
really started to take the sport more seriously because I now realize that
I am not going to be wrestling forever.
Q. Who has inspired you most in your wrestling career?
A. I would have to say Ted Price. He was one of my coaches in high school.
He was just so accomplished in high school and college, that I always want
to try and measure up to him (even though I can't)
Q. What’s your major and what are some of your plans after college?
A. I am an education major and I would like to teach high school social
studies. I also plan to get involved in coaching football and wrestling.
Good luck and thanks for your time.
What they’re saying…
(Adam Dorner, 157)… Sean has really been working hard during practice and
has improved in every aspect since the beginning of the year. He has put
together some hard fought battles on the mat, which has won the meet for
us on a couple of occasions already this year.
(Nick Jasurda, 184)… Sean is great asset to out team. I like his intensity
and work ethic; he is one of those guys you need to make your team better!
He is always pushing himself and his workout partners to be great. Sean
is a great friend and teammate. Keep up the good work Sean.
(Mike DeRoehn, Assistant Coach)… Sean is a huge asset to Titan wrestling.
He has really bought into our system of pressure wrestling and it shows
by his weekly improvement. He's one of our hardest workers day in and day
out. If he continues to train at the intensity level that he does, he has
a bright future ahead.
(Nick Matiash, Head Coach)… Sean Fortmann is one of the most coach able wrestlers
I have ever run into. He absorbs all of the direction that is given to him,
and is eager to put it into practice. Some times wrestlers will try something
once, and when it does not work, they will lose faith and go back to their
bad habits. Sean has been very determined to learn how to do things right.
He did not establish himself overnight, but he has taken
the hard road and truly developed himself. He is to the point of being a
solid wrestler and he still improves every day. I have never heard him say
anything like, "that move just doesn't work for me" or "but I have always
done it the other way". That is the attitude of some one who wants to be
a champion, and it allows me to help him get there.

Upcoming Events
The Titans host MSOE and Whitewater in the Kolf
Center at 7:00 on Tuesday December 10th.
They will finish the first half of the season on the 13th and
14th when they travel to Terre Haute, Indiana for the Rose
Hulman Duals.
One on One
This week’s one on one is with Adam Dorner. Adam
is a true freshman wrestling at 157 pounds.
He hails from Luxemburg-Casco High School where he won an individual
state championship and
was on three team-state championship teams. He is 6-4 this season and
has taken 2nd place at the
Pointer Open. Here is Adam Dorner, One on One:
Q. How has your teammates been in making you
feel welcome here at UW-Oshkosh?
A. My teammates have welcomed me with so much
respect and friendship. They have been there
for me all through this year whenever I had questions or if I needed a
friend.
Q. What other colleges were you interested in
attending?
A. My senior year I was thinking about attending
UW-Parkside because many of the guys from
Luxemburg went there before me.
Q.
What made you decide to attend UW-Oshkosh?
A.
I had talked to both Brad and Jeff Baker my senior
year
and they kept
telling
me that I would
have a spot on the team at Oshkosh and that they could
use
me on the team. They both inspired
me very much during high school as I watched them wrestle
so
I knew it would be great to wrestle
with them in college.
Q.
Earlier this season you took 2nd at the pointer
open.
Did
you picture that success coming that
early?
A.
No I didn't really picture myself doing quite that good
for
my first tournament in college but it
was only freshmen and sophomores so I can't be satisfied
with
that but it was a start.
Q. Also
earlier this season, you beat Mark Meyers, the 6th
ranked
wrestler in the nation at the time.
That was a big win in the Titans beating the 19th
ranked
UW-Platteville
squad. What was your motivation?
A. First
of all my motivation for that match was being
that
Platteville was ranked 19th and we had the
chance to beat them, so I wanted to do my part. Also the
fans
were so loud and encouraging that my
adrenaline was so high that I felt no pain and kept going.
Q.
In your opinion, how does college wrestling differ from
high
school wrestling?
A.
In college there are no easy matches. Everyone is a
battle
that lasts to the last minute, while in high
school you get an experienced guy once in awhile.
Q.
Coming from a traditionally strong wrestling program
in
high school, what is similar from your
high school team to the team here at UW-Oshkosh?
A.
In Luxemburg we always had tough practices which made
us
more conditioned than the opponents
we wrestled. I feel Oshkosh is much the same that we can
outlast
the other opponents because of the
tough coaching staff and hard workers on our team.
Q.
Who has inspired you most in your wrestling career?
A. My
dad has inspired me the most with his stories of
himself
in high school when he was backup to
some of the best guys in the state. He started me off early with
wrestling and have loved it ever since.
He has pushed me through my wrestling career by living his wrestling
dream through me.
Q.
What’s your major?
A.
My major is Business Administration and I plan to own
a
small business in building houses.
Good luck and thanks for your time.
What they’re saying…
(Joel
Dziedzic, 149)… I really look forward to watching Adam grow as
a wrestler. He already has a
tremendous amount of talent and is always improving. He's a great
asset to our Titan team!
(Nick
Jasurda, 184)… Dorner has an excellent work ethic and great attitude.
His basic skills and intensity
make him a very tough wrestler. He is definitely a great asset to
our team.
(Jeff
Baker, 133)… Adam is one of the hardest workers in the room. He
is a great guy to have in the
room because he knows what it takes to be a champion.

RECENT NEWS
TITANS PLACE SEVEN AT CONCORDIA
With over 250 wrestlers and just 10 weight
classes, you can just imagine how tough the Concordia Open was this
Saturday.
The Titans had seven wrestlers place including Senior Joel Dziedzic's
2nd place finish in the 149 pound weight class, a weight class
that was hands down the toughest of the tournament. "I would say
this was a very tough open this year. I can remember years in
the past at Concordia where there were only 10-12 guys
in a bracket," stated Joel. Head Coach Nick Matiash added, "149
was a very tough weight class. The eventual champion, Chris
Vogel, had a close match first round and an over time match in the
quarterfinals. Even some of the opponents Joel Dziedzic beat
decisively, were tough competitors from last year.
For whatever reason, 149 was definitely a tough weight class at this
tournament." If thirty-seven wrestlers wasn't enough of a challenge
for him, he broke his nose in his first match which forced him to wear a
mask the rest of the tournament. "It was quite difficult. I
was fine
until I would tie up and then
(the mask) kept coming down over my eyes and made things difficult,"
said Dziedzic when asked about wrestling with the mask.
After a first round bye, Joel rounded up four straight wins before
losing to Chris Vogel of Loras in the Championship. Vogel was
voted the tournaments most outstanding wrestler.
Senior Nick Jasurda and Sophomore Nathaniel
Muckerheide finished the tournament taking home third place honors.
Nick lost in the semifinals to Paul Cleary of Loras before winning his
next two matches, including a 9-4 decision over Greg
Sparks of Lakeland for third place. Cleary is ranked first in the
nation in division three. Nathaniel recorded the fastest pin in
UW-Oshkosh history this weekend with a time of 20 seconds.
"I just went out there hoping to pin, but I never thought it would be
that fast," said Nathaniel. He won five matches including a
double overtime win over Tim Daly of Chicago in the third place match.
Daly gave Muckerheide his only loss of the tournament
in the quarterfinals. "I think I just wrestled smarter, and
didn't do dumb things the second match," said Muckerheide about his
second match versus Daly.
Mike Farchione lost his 3rd place match in overtime,
however it was not his best match of the day. Mike gave everything
he had in a semifinal match with the returning 197 pound national
champion Yan White of UW-Stevens Point. Both wrestlers
recorded a takedown, but Yan had one more escape than Farchione did.
When asked how he felt going into the match Mike
said, "I was a little nervous, but I had nothing to lose.
I gave it my all and came up short."
Also placing for the Titans were Brad Baker,
Jeff Baker, and Luke Madson. Brad went 3-3 to take
6th place. Jeff barely missed the championship losing in the
semifinals and took 5th place. Luke forfeited
his 5th place match due to a concussion sustained in his previous match.
Just as Jeff did, Luke also lost in the semifinals.
Adam Dorner and Sean Fortmann wrestled well and were one win away from
placing.
Overall the Titans had one of those days that
could have been better, but could have been worse.
"I think it was a good performance and most of the team feels good about
how they did," said Coach Matiash.
"They are the only ones who know what goals they have set for
themselves. I am happy as long as they continue
working toward their goals." Besides results, one of the best
things that happen on Saturday
was the fact that the ten
varsity Titans had a total of 50 matches. That's a lot of matches
to work towards reaching those goals.
The Titans have two weeks before their next match, a dual tournament in
Lacrosse.
UPCOMING EVENTS
The Titans don't have another match until December 7th when they
travel to Lacrosse for the Lacrosse Duals
where they will face four teams from Iowa. Then on the 10th they
host Whitewater in Albee Hall at 7:00.
They will finish the first half of the season on the 13th and 14th when
they travel to Terre Haute, Indiana for the Rose Hulman Duals.
COACH'S CORNER
In an open there is no team score, and there is a wide variety of
competition. In this particular open there
was also an opportunity to wrestle a lot of matches in one day.
This gave our wrestlers a great opportunity to really
test their skills.
As I mentioned last week we were going to work on our defense in the
neutral position and scoring off our
opponents' shots. We did work on it, and we had plenty of chances
to try it out this weekend. Improvement was
evident. I think our wrestlers feel more confident with the change
in style after trying it out this weekend.
Look to see us using ties that prevent the competition from slowing the
match down. After Thanksgiving, we
will be ready for some fast passed wrestling.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving,
Coach Nick Matiash
ONE ON ONE
This week's one on one is with assistant coach Mike DeRoehn.
Mike is in his first year coaching at UW-Oshkosh.
Before coming to Oshkosh he wrestled at Plymouth State College in New
Hampshire and then worked for Ken Chertow's
wrestling camps. Ken is considered by many one of the best
clinicians in the world. Here is Coach DeRoehn, One on One:
Q. How has Oshkosh treated you so far?
A. Oshkosh has been great! I really enjoy working with all
of the athletes as well as Larry and Nick..
Q. What was the deciding factor in coming to Oshkosh?
A. After I spoke with Larry and Nick on the phone this summer, it
really made me want to relocate back to Wisconsin.
Larry is such a positive person with so much experience. When
speaking to him, I could tell that he "lives" for wrestling,
which I do as well. Nick and I share so many of the same views on
how we want our athletes to wrestle. We both believe
in a system of wrestling (pressure wrestling), and mastering the basic
skills. This made it easy for me to want to coach at UWO.
Q. Is this team at where it needs to be at this time of the year?
A. I think we're just about on pace. I don't feel that we're
behind at all, but we're not ahead either. I believe that all of
our competitions between the Stevens Point Open and the Eau Claire
Invite are all just preparation for conference and
nationals. We need to continue to enjoy our wins, learn from our
losses, and keep the end result in mind as we progress through the
season.
Q. What are some of your goals for the team this year?
A. My goals for this team are to win the conference title and be
highly competitive at the NCAA Championships.
I believe in setting your goals high with concrete objectives set to
help get you there.
Q. Was the win against Platteville just another win, or was it
something extra?
A. Probably a little bit of both. It was certainly nice to
know that we're making progress and the win let us know
where we're at within the conference. It was a fun dual too, with
the crowd being so loud and into every match.
But that win is behind us now and I expect us to compete at that level
week in and week out.
.
Q. How has working for Ken Chertow's wrestling camps for two years
help you to become the Coach you are?
A. Coaching with Kenny was great. He is a class act and
helped me learn the complete game of wrestling. He is
a leader in our sport and it was a terrific experience to work side by
side with him, and the many outstanding
clinicians/coaches that he brings to his camps. I learned a great
deal from all of my coaches though, and that is
what makes coaching so fun. You are always learning new
techniques, tactics, and trying to develop quality
people, as well as quality wrestlers. My assistant coach at
Plymouth state, Chad Brakke, probably had the
biggest impact on me. He instilled in me the importance of having
sound fundamentals, consistently attacking your
opponent, and he modeled that philosophy in our wrestling room.
Q. What level of coaching do you like coaching most: youth, high
school, or college, and why?
A. I love teaching wrestling to all ages, but I really enjoy
college coaching the most. It is fun to coach intense,
pressure wrestling and see it happening in the practice room and in
competitions. The little kids and high school
kids are fun too, but the level of intensity is different.
Luckily, I still get a chance to work with the younger age
groups through the World Class Wrestling Club, and working a lot of
summer camps.
Q. Who's your favorite wrestler of all time and why?
A. My favorite wrestler of all time would have to be Rick Sanders.
He was kind of a free spirit, but lived to
wrestle and had fun while doing it. When watching video of him, he
always looked so relaxed and comfortable
when he was out there. You can tell he was in it because he
enjoyed it. He isn't as well known as Gable, or
John Smith, because he died before his career was over, but he was the
first American to win a world gold
medal and also earned two Olympic silvers.
Q. Could you explain a little bit about the clinics you run during
the week?
A. I'm glad you asked about that. The world class wrestling
clinics run on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
nights from 6:00 PM-7:30 PM It is open to all area wrestlers in
grades K-12. This allows me to stay in touch
with the young guys and help them to attain their goals. I think
it is important for them to learn proper
techniques/drilling at a young age so that they don't develop poor
habits. We also focus on mental training
and continually having a positive attitude. The mental aspect is
so important in wrestling, that if we can it at
a young age, I think it will have a large impact down the road. As
I said before, I truly enjoy teaching
wrestling and hope I will have the opportunity to train many of these
kids all the way through high school.
If anyone would like more information on the clinics, they can email me
directly at
deroehn@wiwrestling.com.
Good luck and thanks for your time.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING.
(Brad Baker, 125).Coach is one of the greatest technicians I have
ever wrestled for. He is great for UWO
and even greater for the sport.
(Mike Farchione, 197).He's a very intense coach who likes non-stop
action and nothing less than 100%.
He compliments Coach Matiash very well.
(Jed Lechleitner, 197). Coach DeRoehn is a great asset to our program
because he has great enthusiasm
and he makes everyone work hard from 125 to Heavyweight. He has a
lot of knowledge about wrestling
and he is a great teacher.
(Nick Matiash, Head Coach). Coach Mike DeRoehn really completes our
coaching staff. Not only is he a
good technician, but he also knows how to teach. The team learns a
lot from him and they respect him.
With the clinics he puts on for high school and younger wrestlers, he is
proving to be a real asset to wrestling
programs in the whole area. He really cares about wrestling, and
we are very lucky to have him helping us.

the championship.
Finally, all the Titans would like to thank the many fans that attended

OSHKOSH DEFEATS 19TH
RANKED PLATTEVILLE!!!!
The UW-Oshkosh wrestling team put Oshkosh on the map Friday with
a big win against Platteville 22-19
in front of a packed house. Platteville
entered the meet as the 19th ranked team in division three.
Nathaniel Muckerheide started the night by doing what he does best and
getting a pin over Ned Lease.
Being the first match of the night is something new to Muckerheide.
“It was
kind of weird wrestling first cause
I never did it before. I kind of liked it, because I started it
all out so then I didn't have to worry about anything and
could cheer everybody on,” said Muckerheide.
“I thought a win right off the bat would bring the fans into
the match
a little more, and if the fans were in it that would pump up the
wrestlers more and it worked.”
Then Brad Baker increased the lead by 10 with his major decision of Dan
Colburn. “Muck got me
pumped
with his first period pin,” said Baker after his 24-10 victory.
“I was happy with the win, but you never win by 14,
you have to get that extra team point.”
Platteville bounced back with a couple of wins then it was Joel
Dziedzic’s time to change
the momentum.
After getting taken down to his back right a way, he came back strong to
get the pin. “I was a
little shocked
to find myself fighting off my back, but I knew that I was going to be
able to pin the guy,” stated Joel. “ I just got
off to a slow start and was nervous wrestling in my first competition in
over a year.”
Dziedzic’s pin set up the nights featured match and what a
match it was. True Freshman
Adam Dorner
used 6 near fall points in the third period to beat the sixth ranked guy
in the nation, Mark Meyers.
When asked about his mindset entering the match, Dorner said “I had
nothing to lose and lots to prove.
I had wrestled Mark my Junior year (in high school) at state and had
lost.” Adam had
some extra
incentive to get his revenge. “All
the fans there made my adrenaline go sky high. I really wanted to
win
for the team for all the things they have done since I have been here to
make it a more enjoyable experience.”
Some people may consider this an upset, but not the Titans.
His teammates knew what he was made of
and never counted him out. Captain
Joel Dziedzic had this to say after Dorner’s big win, “He's
wrestling
awesome and has a lot of drive and motivation in him. I think that
he has a great chance at beating some
quality wrestlers this year and making a big statement as a true
freshman.” Head coach
Nick Matiash added
“Meyers is a tough opponent, but Adam just
wrestled that match like he would any other. He was down by
a bit going into the third period.
It was a situation were many wrestlers would break, but Dorner
was undaunted.
Some times we lose sight of what determination can accomplish.
Dorner exhibited great determination and kept
wrestling all out.”
Platteville would go on to win the next two matches to bring the
match score to 19-16 in the Titans favor
with two matches remaining. At
184, Nick Jasurda got a reversal in the third period to tie the match at
3-3.
He then rode him out to secure the riding time point and the win over
Peter Moe. “I felt in good condition to
attack in the third period. I remember just before the third
period started that I needed to attack and stay in
good position. Once I had the reversal, I just tried to tire my
opponent out. Thankfully, I was able to keep
the top pressure on my opponent to win with riding time,”
Jasurda said. Platteville’s Rob Forsyth went on
to get the decision at 197 to end the night.
Going into the match, the Titans had nothing to lose.
With Platteville being nationally ranked and the
Titans coming off a season in which they finished sixth in the
conference, its no doubt this was a huge win.
The Titans scored some extra points in three of their five wins, however
Head Coach Nick Matiash believes
the other seven matches were just important as those three.
“It is not about doing just enough to
beat your
opponent, it is about doing as much as you can to score extra points for
the team. Don't forget the
guys
who may have lost but gave the extra effort to fight out of a pinning
situation and save us team points.
You can not win a meet like that without everyone.”
The
Titans feel as they had some extra adrenaline wrestling at home in front
of a packed gym.
Matiash made sure to make notice too. “The
crowd was so loud that the referee could not hear the
buzzer on three separate occasions and had to be "flagged down”
when time ran out. That
level of fan
involvement makes our competitions extra enjoyable.”
This
win was a special one for Head Coach Nick Matiash. Nick
wrestled for Platteville where he
won two conference titles. “The
fact that it is my old team makes it exciting, because I know how
hard
they work, and that they are not easy to beat.” Beating
a nationally ranked team sometimes comes with
some extra luggage though. “Platteville
is a solid team and is ranked 19th in the nation. By
defeating them
we can reassure ourselves that we are headed in the right direction. It
also helps us gain respect as a solid team.
However, with respect comes expectation. We
will be expected to perform at this level from now on,” Added Matiash.
The Titans travel to Mequon on Saturday to see if they can continue to
perform at that level.
OSHKOSH TAKES IT TO LAWRENCE!!!
The Titans started the season strong with a 31-6 win on Tuesday
over Lawrence. The
meet started at 157 pounds
and Lawrence got it started right away when Ric Scannel beat Adam Dorner
4-0. The Titans bounced
back with
Jason Gruszynske’s convincing win at 165.
Lawrence would see there second and final win come at 174 and
it
was all Titans after that. Senior
Nick Jasurda got the momentum going with a 8-3 win over Adam Nickle.
Mike Farchione kept it going with a 4-0 win over Mark Schmoll.
After Nathan Muckerheide’s pin at heavyweight,
the lighter guys came to the mat with some exciting matches.
Brad Baker had the closest match of the night winning
10-9 thanks to his one point riding time advantage.
Brad’s brother Jeff had a more convincing win using six
takedowns to get the major decision.
The Titans Luke Madson got a takedown with little time left in
the third
period to send the match into overtime where he eventually got the first
takedown to win the match. It turned
out to be the last match of the night as Lawrence declined to wrestle
against the Titans Joel Dziedzic.
For being the first dual of the year the Titans will take the win, but they know they still have work to do.
“We need to be more offensive against Platteville. Having
wrestled for Platteville, I know that we must wrestle
offensively, or they will. If
we let them take the offensive, that will obviously put us at a
disadvantage,” said
Head Coach Nick Matiash. “I
was not very familiar with Lawrence however from watching some
matches
that involved us and Lawrence at the Stevens Point open, I felt we would
win the meet.” The Titans
will face
19th ranked Platteville in Oshkosh on Friday night.
Upcoming Events
The Titans travel to Mequon, Wisconsin on Saturday
for the Concordia open.
Some of the teams that will be there will be Platteville, Stevens Point,
and Parkside.
Coach's
corner
I have
expressed most of my feelings and thoughts about this last week in the
above articles.
However, I would like to add a thank you to all those who support our
team. Admittedly,
in the grand scheme of things, a wrestling competition is insignificant. However,
these young
men are learning to do there best, learning to work as a team, to take
responsibility for
themselves and seeing just how much they can accomplish, that is an
experience worth supporting.
Thank you,
Coach Nick Matiash

One on One
This weeks one on one is with Nick Jasurda.
Nick is a Senior and one of the captains of this team.
He took 2nd in the WIAC last year and was an alternate at the
NCAA Division three national championships.
Here is Nick Jasurda, One on One::
Q.
What are some of your goals for the team this year?
A. (1) Top 3 in WIAC (2) .750 dual meet record (3) Gain Respect
(4) Out work out opponents.
(5) Many national qualifiers!
Q.
Last year you took second in the WIAC. When the guy who beat
you couldn’t go to nationals
due to some violations, the conference selected an alternate from a
different weight class and not you.
Can you explain how you felt at the time?
A. Honestly, it kind of
left a sour feeling in my mind. I really do not like to
dwell on "what if's,"
but I do kind of use that one to fuel the fire! In the general
scheme of things, I felt it was very cheap
of our conference to leave some weight classes open at the national
conference.
Q.
You recently took second place at the pointer open, losing 3-2
to the 7th ranked guy in Division
two, were you satisfied with how you wrestled at the tournament?
A. It was a tough
tournament to open the season. I felt like we prepared our
selves good. Personally,
I just tried to take it one match at a time. I was happy with
some aspects of each match. Though I did
loose a close match in the finals, so I guess there are some things
that need to be worked on.
Q.
On Tuesday the Titans beat Lawrence by 25 points, was this a
statement if so what is it?
A. Yeah I guess it was
kind of a good debut for us! It was nice to go into Lawerence and
win one!
It did wonders in getting our confidence rolling in the right
direction. Statement being, it was a nice
conference win!
Q.
After the big win against Lawrence, the Titans had an even
bigger win against 19th ranked Platteville.
What does this mean for this team and this program?
A. This was definitely
a statement for us! It just was a culmination of a great
coaching staff, hardworking
team, and positive attitudes. The win in itself was huge,
seeing they are nationally ranked. Hopefully if we
continue to work hard, this will be just a glimpse of what is to
come in the future.
Q.
At both dual meets this week, you had an enormous fan support
including packing the gym against
Platteville. Is this the most fan support at UW-Oshkosh in your
tenure?
A. Oh for sure! I
remember talking to some alumni after the dual meet, and they said
that they have
never seen the gym that packed during their days here either. It
was awesome to hear the crowd
getting into the matches, it just elevated the evening even more.
Much thanks to our fans!!!
Oh and special thanks to the ladies on the UW-Oshkosh gymnastics team
for your support!
Q.
If you could name one person in your life who has inspired you,
who would it be?
A. I would definitely say
it would be my old high school wrestling coach, Ted Price, who now is
the
head coach at Muskego High School. The man's attitude on life in
general just amazes me.
I think he was the one, besides my family, who really drove home
the fact that hard work
does pay off. He is one of those in your face kind of guys;
who installed the "here I come, like it or not,"
kind of philosophy. And yes, THE PRICE IS RIGHT.
Q.
What are some of you hobbies outside of wrestling?
A. Snowboarding is definitely
a fun sport. Lifting weights and golfing are some of my hobbies.
I like watching movies, it just seems to take you into this other
world for a few hours.
Video games are sometimes fun, but not nearly as exciting as watching This
Old House episodes, wuhoo.
Oh and beating Joel in Backgammon definitely ranks! I definitely am
going to take to surfing once college is done.
Q.
What are your plans for after College?
A. Good question! I
have no idea right now! I do see myself moving out to either of
the coasts in
pursuit of a job within criminal justice. Federal Probation and
Parole does appeal to me on the
aspects of the job. Warm sunshine year round with oceans, and
mountains sounds good to me.
Maybe after living in the real world for a couple of years I might be
inspired to go back to school
for a graduate degree in international business, or teaching.
Hopefully I will have an opportunity to
coach wrestling as well!
Congrats on your 5-1 start this season.
Good luck and thanks for your time.
What they’re saying…
(Joel Dziedzic, 149)… Nick is an excellent wrestler and hard worker. He has
come a long way in his
wrestling. He brings a lot of great leadership skills to the team
and is an excellent team leader.
He's an excellent friend and teammate.
(Jeff Baker,
133)…Nick has an excellent aggressive style of wrestling and great
technique.
He is in great condition and I would hate to be the one to have to go 7
minutes with him.
(Luke Madson, 141)… Nick is one of the hardest
working guys I know. he is also a great
leader and friend to me and everyone on the team. He is a great captain
and a real asset to the team...
keep up the great work roomie.
(Nick Matiash, Head Coach)…
Nick Jasurda started to develop an aggressive style of wrestling last
year.
It started to show when he qualified as an NCAA tournament alternate. This year,
he is continuing to develop
his wrestling techniques by working on the fine points that
will take him to the next level. He is a great captain to have for our
team because he leads by example
and looks out for the team.

ONE ON ONE
This weeks one on one is with Joel Dziedzic. Joel is a three time national
qualifier, a two time WIAC conference champ, an all-American, and a team
captain. Here is Joel Dziedzic, One on One::
Q. How’s the team looking this year?
A. I think that the team is looking as good as ever. We have a lot of good
returnees and some tough looking new freshman. I’m excited for the action
to begin.
Q. Is this the best Titan team in your tenure?
A. I would have to say “yes”! We have an excellent coaching staff and a hard
working team. Two key factors for success!
Q. What are some of your goals for the team this year?
A. I would like to see us have at least 4 national qualifiers and as a team
place in the top two at conference.
Q. We all know what Larry (Marchionda) has brought to this program, could
you explain how it was before he got here?
A. I wouldn’t want to say anything bad about the previous coach, but Coach
March has really turned this program around. He has brought his great expertise
and motivation to our program.
Q. Do you see anything special about this year’s team compared to the other
teams you have been on?
A. I feel that this year’s team is probably the best that I have been on
because of all the great coaching available on and off the mat.
Q. Could you explain a little bit about your practice partners and how are
they going to help you achieve your goals?
A. Well, my practice partners are the ones who will make me a better wrestler.
I would have to say that I am very impressed with Adam Dorner and the drive
that he has. He is a true freshman and he pushes me. I am really happy
to have him in the room. Luke Madson is also my practice partner and he
pushes me a great deal as well.
Q. If you could name one person in your life who has inspired you, who would
it be?
A. That is an easy question. Coach March has done a lot for me and brought
me to new levels. I have had the opportunity to wrestle and coach in Japan
and Bulgaria and these were awesome experiences that I will remember forever.
He has inspired me to work hard and have a good attitude while doing it.
I would also have to mention that my brother, Mark, has inspired me a great
deal. If it weren’t for him I don’t know that I would be wrestling at UWO.
Q. What are some of you hobbies outside of wrestling?
A. I really enjoy the outdoors and keeping active. I spent a lot of my
summer mountain biking, trail running, and wakeboarding. In the winter time
I try to get out and snowboard as much as possible, although with wrestling
it is hard to find the time.
Q. What are your plans for after College?
A. Once I finish college, hopefully next year, I plan to move out west.
I would like to continue my participation in wrestling through coaching.
I am an Elem. Ed. major and will hopefully find a good job as a middle school
math teacher. After living in another state for a few years I plan to come
back to Wisconsin to teach and coach.
Thanks you so much for your time and good luck this year.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING…
(Nick Jasurda, 184)… Obviously Joel brings a lot to our team. I like his
dominate style of wrestling, which speaks for itself with his experience.
He is one of those in your face kind of guys, always pushing himself and
our team past our limits. Joel is a great leader and a great friend. I
am just glad he is back for this year, THANKS JOEL!
(Brad Baker, 125)…Not only is Joel one of the hardest workers on the team,
but he also makes everyone around him work harder. He is a great captain,
wrestler, and friend. He’s going to make a great teacher and coach someday.
(Adam Dorner, 157)… Joel is one of the hardest workers on the team and pushes
me to keep going harder and to get better. He teaches me what’s right and
how to do the moves correctly. He always there for me if I want to go for
a run as well. Thanks to Joel I have been able to keep a good work ethic
in college.

RECENT NEWS
The Titans will be coached this year by Nick Matiash. Nick was an assistant
last year under Larry Marchionda. Nick wrestled for the University of Wisconsin-Platteville
where he was a two-time WIAC Champion. Before coming to the Titans, Nick
helped coach at Fond du Lac High School for two years. Larry has stayed
with the team as the director of wrestling operations. Larry received a
new hip last year and the doctors have ordered him to stay out of the room.
Mike DeRoehn will be Coach Matiash’s Assistant this year. Mike spent the
past year and a half working for one of the best clinicians in the nation,
Ken Chertow. He also wrestled in college for Plymouth State University.
Mike Hunter, the head coach at Oshkosh North, will be volunteering his time
until the high school season starts. Joel Dziedzic and Nick Jasurda have
been named the captains this year. The new Titans are Adam Dorner, Dan Winkler,
and Brad Glapa.
UPCOMING EVENTS
The Titans open up the season in Stevens Point on November 9th for the pointer
open. The pointer open is one of the toughest opens around. Some of the
teams there include division one Wisconsin and Northern Illinois, division
two Wisconsin-Parkside, and division three power house Wartburg. Then on
Tuesday, October 12th, the Titans travel north to Appleton to face off against
Lawrence. On Friday the Titans will face Platteville in Oshkosh. We hope
to see you there.
COACH'S CORNER
This year should prove to be very exciting for UW Oshkosh wrestling. We have
a more experienced group than we have had in the past few years. This is
a solid group that is spread well, across the weight classes. We are fine
tuning our wrestling skills through consistent incremental improvement.
As each practice ends, the wrestlers are better than they were before they
walked into practice.
Expect to see action filled matches this year. Coach Mike DeRoehn and I
both agree on coaching an offensive style based around high percentage moves.
We have been practicing constant pressure and creating our own openings
instead of waiting for them to develop. We also "live" by the basics and
earn our points with solid moves. This helps to avoid "living and dying"
by the gimmick moves. I mean the kind of moves that take your opponent to
his back half the time, and back fire on you the rest of the time. In short,
we are working on taking as many good shots as needed, and scoring with a
sure thing when we go to finish.
Good luck with your involvement in wrestling this year.
Thank you,
Coach Nick Matiash
WEIGHT BY WEIGHT:
125-Brad Baker (Freedom) returns from a year off, however will be unable to
participate in any team events for the first semester. Aaron Burbach (Markesan)
might drop down from 133 to fill the spot.
133-Competing for this spot is a pair of 3rd place finishers at the Wisconsin
State tournament. Jeff Baker (Freedom) is coming off of a redshirt year.
He placed 5th at the WIAC conference tournament in 2001 as a freshman.
Aaron Burbach returns as a redshirt freshman.
141-Luke Madson(Clinton) returns after placing 5th in the WIAC last year.
He has been bothered by injuries the past couple years and when he’s healthy,
he’s very tough. He is a two time letter winner. Also at this spot is freshman
Dan Winkler (North Fond du Lac) who took 3rd place at the Wisconsin state
championships last year.
149-Joel Dziedzic (Kewaskum) returns for his senior year after red shirting
last year. Joel was a three time national qualifier and earned all-American
honors once. He is one of the captains of this team. Matt Kehoe (Grafton)
a sophomore, Josh Murnane (East Troy) a sophomore, and Josh Russow (Laconia)
a senior will also compete at this weight.
157-The Titans welcome in Wisconsin state champ, Adam Dorner (Lux-Casco).
Not only has he achieved individual success, but he has also been on his
share of good teams. While at Luxemburg-Casco High School, he helped win
three team state championships. Look for some of the backups at 149 to compete
at this weight. Brad Glapa (Thomas More) will redshirt at this weight.
165-Jason Gruszynske (Laconia) a sophomore and Ethan Krumnow (Thomas More)
a junior will compete for this spot.
174-Sean Fortmann (Mukwonago), a sophomore, returns after a year on and off
of varsity and appears to be the only Titan at this weight class. Krumnow
could possibly move up to this weight and back Fortmann up. Also at this
weight is Bren Nimke (Oshkosh West).
184-Nick Jasurda (Mukwonago), a senior, brings a lot of experience to the
mat this year. He returns after a second place finish in the WIAC last year.
Nick is one of the captains of this team. Also at this weight is Mike Kratz (Oconto
Falls). Mike was a state champ in high school and wrestled one year for
Marquette before their program was dropped. Mike plans on red-shirting this
year. Also at this weight is sophomore Mike Croninger (Oshkosh West), a former
state qualifier.
197-Mike Farchione (Kewaskum), a junior, is a former Wisconsin state champ
and will return at this weight. Adam Pearson (Beloit), a former place winner
at the state championships also plans to compete at this weight. Jed Lechleitner,
a sophomore from Tomahawk and a state place winner in 2000, will also challenge
for a varsity spot here.
285-Nathaniel Muckerheide (Oostburg), a former state champ, and Dustin Drexel (Campbellsport),
a former state place winner will battle for the number one spot at this weight.
Both were on and off varsity last year.
ONE ON ONE
This weeks one on one is with the newly labeled “Director of Wrestling Operations”
Larry Marchionda. Larry has been involved in wrestling for over 50 years.
Larry is going on his 3rd year in the UW-Oshkosh program. Here is Larry
Marchionda, One on One:
Q. First off, how’s the new hip?
A. The new hip has been great, wonder why I waited so long. It’s nice having
no pain and being able to sleep at night.
Q. Are you a little disappointed about not being allowed in the wrestling
room.
A. The doctors have my best interest at heart. They worry about me getting
down on the mat or someone falling into me. With the present coaching staff
of Nick Matiash and Mike DeRoehn we have the expertise, motivation and energy
we need to get the team to the next level.
Q. What are some of the things that you will be doing this year as the director
of wrestling operations?
A. This year we will continue to upgrade the wrestling program at UWO and
serve the community around Oshkosh with wrestling clinics and camps. I
will be in charge of academics, recruiting and summer camps.
Q. What are some of your goals for the team this year?
A. As a coach your goal is always to see your wrestlers achieve to their
fullest potential. When individuals achieve success, then good thing happen
to the team. We need to have a winning dual meet season and try to get many
into the finals of the WIAC Championships.
Q. What does Coach Matiash bring to the titan program?
A. Coach Matiash brings many things to the mat. He is organized, a great
technician and teacher. He has the ability to motivate and is willing to
sacrifice for the good of the team and this makes him a good leader.
Q. Congratulations on getting married. When’s the date?
A. I knew you would have to ask that. Joanne will become Mrs. Marchionda
on December 21, 2002.
Q. With all the college wrestling programs getting dropped, is the UW-Oshkosh
program in any danger?
A. Great question, this was discussed briefly last spring and the Chancellor
has gone on record as saying there will be no sports dropped at UW Oshkosh.
We have great support from Athletic Director, Al Ackerman and the entire
athletic department.
Q. How’s this years recruiting class?
A. Because of the hip surgery in March we were not able to get out and spread
the “good news” about UW. Oshkosh wrestling. We have excellent quality but
not great numbers in this years recruiting class. We are fortunate to have
a very quality young group of returning wrestlers.
Q. How does the WIAC rank among other Division three conferences?
A. WIAC is a very strong conference with quality coaches. The WIAC is
the toughest conference in Division III. With 3 NCAA national champions
and 8 All Americans there is not much of an argument.
Q. What are some of the things your doing to promote wrestling at UW-Oshkosh,
and wrestling in general?
A. We are hosting several events like the Oshkosh On the Water tournament
with 52 teams in December. We are hosting a dual meet between the WIAA Division
I State Champions Milton and The WIAA Division II State Champions Luxemburg
at Albee Hall on February 4th. The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh will
be wrestling UW. LaCrosse at Fond du Lac High School on January 11th. All
these things help promote wrestling at all levels.
Q. What’s one reason why our readers should come watch the Titans this year?
A. The new attack style of wrestling will be exciting. The team is working
on being an “in your face” offensive style of wrestling. This will make the
matches very exciting and the Titans will be successful.
Thanks you so much for your time and good luck this year.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING…
(Joe Dziedzic, 149)… He's a great coach and friend. He's done a lot for the
wrestlers and the program here at UWO.
(Nick Jasurda, 184)… March has done so much for this program, we are definitely
blessed to have him here at UW-Oshkosh.
(Sean Fortman, 174)… Larry is one of the main reasons that I came to Oshkosh.
He has really done a lot for not only me but this whole program.
(Nick Matiash, Head Coach)…The Oshkosh wrestling program owes many thanks
to Larry Marchionda. He came out of retirement 2 seasons ago to help keep
the program going. After two years as head coach and hip surgery with complications,
he has
repositioned himself. He is now the wrestling program director. In this
position, Larry looks out for the well being of the athletes individually,
