Oshkosh, Wis. - The UW-La Crosse wrestling team improved to 5-1 and 1-1
in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) with a 32-10
victory at UW-Oshkosh Wednesday night in the Kolf Sports Center.
UW-L won eight of 10 matches to record the victory. Patt Parrillo
defeated Kyle Kleuskens 11-7 in the 125-pound match before Dan Akright
gave the Titans a 6-3 lead with a win by fall (2:29) over Mark Girgis at
133-pounds.
The Eagles then won the next six matches. Ben Kreuzer defeated Morgan
Sickinger 4-3 at 141; Jay Milz defeated Paul Gretzinger 10-0 at 149 and
Ross Needham beat Dallas Moe 13-5 at 157 for a 14-6 UW-L lead.
Scott Dorn defeated Kevin Luedtke 9-1 at 165-pounds while Josh Chelf
defeated Adam Dorner 11-2 at 174 and Jason Lulloff beat Pat Detmer 14-3
at 184. UW-Oshkosh's Justin Schmalfeldt defeated Andy Moore 10-2 at 197
to cut the Eagles' lead to 26-10, but Dan Laurent pinned Kyle Coleman
(2:07) at 285 for the final scoring margin of 32-10
The Titans have had
three competitions since the last update when we competed against
Dubuque and UW at the WWCA Clinic. On Saturday November 11th we traveled
to the Pointer Open and faced some great competition. There were a
number of different schools in attendance ranging from Division I
through NJCAA. In total, we had six place winners in the event, which is
a decent showing based on our team's experience level.
Placing Top 6 were
Dan Akright-133-5th
Paul Gretzinger-149-4th
Dallas Moe-157-5th
Eli Felts-165-2nd
Adam Dorner-174-5th
Justin Schmalfeldt-HWT-2nd
On November 15th, we hosted UW-Platteville who came into the dual meet
ranked #25 nationally. It was a back and forth dual that provided a lot
of excitement for the home fans. The Titans prevailed and pulled the
upset 26-19. This was a great early season win and gives the team some
confidence to compete against national level competition. One of the
biggest wins came from our super tough freshman Justin Schmalfeldt. He
beat up on Ryan Rozek who came into the dual ranked #5 in the country.
Justin is working his way down to 197 and is routinely giving up 50-75
pounds. However, he competes like an animal and is making great progress
early on. Here is a link to the dual results.

Following the big win over Platteville, we headed over to Iowa for the
Coe Invite. Again we faced some great competition including #2
ranked/defending NCAA Champions Wartburg College, #12 Coe College, and
#16 Cornell College. Similar to the Pointer Open, we totaled six place
winners. In contrast we put four into the championship finals. however
it turned out to be bitter sweet as each of the Titans fell in their
finals bout. Earning second place finishes for the Titans were Paul
Gretzinger-149, Adam Dorner-174, Pat Detmer-184, and continuing his fine
freshman season, Justin Schmalfeldt-HWT. Earning 5th was Kyle
Coleman-197 and in 6th was Derek Koenig-133.
To cap off the big news before a short break for Thanksgiving, the
UW-Oshkosh Titans broke into the National Rankings this week at #30.
This is on ly the second time in the history of the program that
UW-Oshkosh has been nationally ranked. This is a great sign that people
are taking notice of the progress we're making and we plan to continue
climbing until we're at the top.

sixth place.

dropping a 3-2 decision to his opponent from Wartburg. Detmer prevailed
in a close semi-final bout before dropping a 2-0 decision. Finally,

Justin Schmalfeldt (Fr. • Burlington) conquered both of his opponents as
the UW-Oshkosh wrestling team opened its 2006-07 season with a victory

in Green Bay.
The University of Wisconsin went unbeaten in the round-robin event by

to its loss to the University of Wisconsin, UW-Oshkosh defeated the
University of Dubuque, 29-10.
In its victory over the University of Dubuque, UW-Oshkosh scored the
last 29 points of the match to gain revenge for last year's 31-12 loss
to the Spartans. The Titans had the winner in seven of the 10 weight
classes, including Pat Detmer (Jr. • Lodi) and Kyle Coleman (Sr. •
Poplar) who won on forfeits at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively.

Pulaski) at 149 pounds, Dallas Moe (Fr. • Seymour) at 157, Kevin Luedtke
(Jr. • Two Rivers) at 165, Adam Dorner (Sr. • Casco) at 174 and

Shumaker posted an 11-2 win over Derek Koenig (So. • Cleveland) and

As expected, the University of Wisconsin had little difficulty defeating
UW-Oshkosh. The lone victory for the Titans came at 285 pounds, where
Schmalfeldt pulled out a 7-4 victory over the Badgers' Jordan Hein.
Schmalfeldt's victory came in the contest of the match.
The University of Wisconsin won two contests against UW-Oshkosh on pins
and another on a technical fall. Collin Cudd of the Badgers pinned
Stratton in 3:30 at 125 pounds, while Dallas Herbst pinned Coleman in

Titans To Wrestle Division I Badgers In Season Opener
The UW-Oshkosh wrestling team opens its 2006-07 season with dual meets
against the University of Dubuque (Iowa) and NCAA Division I University
of Wisconsin on Friday (Nov. 3) at the KI Convention Center in Green

University of Wisconsin. The opening match is followed by a 10 a.m.
contest involving UW-Oshkosh and the University of Dubuque. The final

against the University of Wisconsin.
UW-Oshkosh returns nine lettermen from last year's team that posted a
2-13 dual meet record and finished sixth at the WIAC Championship.
It will be the fifth meeting between UW-Oshkosh and the University of
Wisconsin, with the Badgers winning last year's match in Green Bay,
51-0. The University of Wisconsin also defeated UW-Oshkosh by scores of
23-12 in 1969-70, 24-8 in 1970-71 and 46-6 in 2004-05.

Eat Smart Play Hard
Wrestling Campaign
For over
three decades, USDA’s Food and Nutrition
Service (FNS) has led America’s fight
against hunger and provided nutrition
assistance through a variety of programs
that make up the National Nutrition Safety
Net. The FNS website is
www.fns.usda.gov/fns.
Recently,
USDA teamed up with Dan Gable, wrestling
great and member of the President’s Council
on Physical Fitness and Sports; the National
Athletic Trainers’ Association; and the
National Wrestling Coaches Association to
promote the importance of eating healthy and
being physically active with America’s
youth.
USDA’s
nutrition programs teach America to
Eat Smart Play Hard. As wrestling
encourages sound nutrition and fitness, USDA
would like to explore many partnering
efforts with wrestling and some of its child
nutrition programs, including school
breakfast, school lunch, and summer feeding.
UW-Oshkosh has joined in the fight to "pin
childhood obesity" by participating in the
USDA Poster program. This is sponsored
by the USDA and the National Wrestling
Coaches Association. To encourage healthy
eating and fitness in your school, print
off this poster and distribute it to
children in your school as well as posting
it in prominent areas around school.
