Wahhab Earns All-American
Honors
Dallas, TX
The UW-Milwaukee Wrestling Club returned to the NCWA National
Championships, looking to improve on last year's #17 finish and earn
All-American honors. In 2006, the top six placewinners in each weight
class were awarded honors, including David Vanden Avond, UW-M's first
All-American (6th, 157 lbs.). This year the awards were expanded to the
top eight placewinners. Although returning qualifier Nick Tadeo (141
lbs.) finished in last year's top eight, he'd have to repeat that
performance to become an All-American.
Along with Tadeo, club founder Gabriel Wahhab also returned to
Nationals, looking to finish his college career on a high note. Wahhab
returned to UW-M for graduate credits, taking advantage of the
eligibility he had remaining upon graduating last Spring. Although he
has been very successful running his own company, Connexion
Technologies, Wahhab wanted to earn the honors for which he had trained
so hard.
After finishing 4th at the North Central Conference Regionals, Tadeo was
challenged at the national tournament. He received a forfeit in the
first round, then had to face the North Central Conference champion,
Kyle Schank of Grand Valley State University, who had defeated former
All-American Cortez Flynn in the conference finals. Despite quick
attacks, Tadeo was unable to overcome Schank, falling 15-3, a defeat
which sent him to the consolation bracket. He then took on Josh Flint,
the 3rd place finisher from the Mid-Atlantic Conference. Flint also used
size to his advantage, coming out ahead 14-2, eliminating Tadeo from the
tournament.
Wahhab was on the mats early in the tournament, taking down Kyle Van
Sice of Shepherd in the each period of the first round, winning by a
major decision, 9-0. He then faced #4-seeded Ben Heist of Northampton
CC, the Northeast Conference champion. Wahhab's patience proved
successful, as he ended a 1-1 tie at the end of the third period with a
single-leg attack, from which he rolled his opponent to his back for the
pin, with just 1 second remaining in the match. Wahhab continued his
solid wrestling with another victory in the quarterfinals, scoring the
winning takedown in the third period. His dominant riding earned him the
riding time needed to secure the 7-6 victory. By making it to the
semifinals, Wahhab also secured his All-American status.
The semifinal match pitted Gabe against freshman sensation Zach Brewer,
the Southeast Conference champion and the #1 seed. Though Gabe held his
own, Brewer's strong position throughout the match yielded the 11-3
major decision.
The next morning, only the All-Americans competed, vying for their
highest possible finishes. In the consolation semi-final, Wahhab had a
re-match against conference runner-up Adam Ortiz of Grand Valley State
University. Though Gabe made the necessary adjustments to defeat Ortiz,
keeping the match to a 1-1 tie going into the third period, a
controversial call kept a fantastic counterattack from giving him the
victory, as his opponent was awarded a takedown and Wahhab the reversal,
after Ortiz had scored an escape. Wahhab gave the final escape but could
not score the necessary takedown. The match ended with Wahhab on the
short end of a 5-3 score. In the fifth place match against conference
champion Travis Eisen of GVSU, a very similar call in the third period
denied Wahhab near-fall points, as the action was called "out of
bounds," despite his opponents' shoulders' being in the wrestling
circle. Eisen gained the victory, 6-3.
Gabriel Wahhab became UW-M's second All-American for his outstanding
performance, finishing sixth at 149 lbs. UW-M finished 33rd out of the
67 teams that had national qualifiers. UW-M results below.

Three Panther
Wrestlers Qualify for Nationals
-February 24, 2007
Grand Valley State University, MI
With a line-up depleted by injuries and other challenges, the
UW-Milwaukee Wrestling Club took five wrestlers to the North Central
Conference Championships, hosted defending NCWA national champion Grand
Valley State University. To qualify for the upcoming NCWA National
Championships, to be held in Dallas, Texas, the wrestlers needed to
finish in the top eight in their respective weight classes.
After a promising first round, three Panther wrestlers, sophomore Nick
Tadeo (141 lbs.), graduate student Gabriel Wahhab (149 lbs.), and
sophomore Brady Hundt (235 lbs.), had the chance to qualify for the
semi-final round. Tadeo and Wahhab secured their trip to the national
tournament early on, scoring a pin and a major decision respectively.
Wahhab thoroughly controlled his quarterfinal match against the
#4-seeded Carlos Lopez of Indiana Wesleyan. Both wrestlers came up short
in the semi-final round, losing decisions to the #1 seeds in their
brackets.
In the following rounds, Wahhab regained his competitive edge, securing
two additional major decisions on the way to a 4-1 record on the day and
a 3rd place finish. Tadeo also came on strong with a pin, his second of
the day, but fell short in a re-match against Miami University's (OH)
Erik Mayer, leaving him with the 4th place medal. Brady Hundt had the
most pins on the day - three - on his way to a 7th place finish.
With the NCWA allowing multiple entries at each weight class, the UW-M
club was able to enter both #3-seeded Club President Darin Kwilinski and
sophomore Arturo Martinez, Jr. at 165 lbs. However, neither were able to
secure a trip to the national tournament.
Grand Valley State came away with the team title, followed by Mott
Community College (MI), with the University of Southern Indiana rounding
out the top three. UW-Milwaukee finished 7th of the 14 teams entered.
Several other conference teams were unable to compete in the event.
The Panthers leave next week for the NCWA National Championships, March
8th-10th, a showcase event featuring many exciting events for wrestling
fans. Find out more at www.ncwa.net!

UW-M Wrestling Wins One at National Duals
January 14, 2007
-Cedar Falls, IA
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Wrestling Club hit the mats this
weekend at the nation's premier dual meet championships, the NWCA/Cliff
Keen National Duals. Top NCAA DI, DII, and DII programs from colleges
and universities across the country, as well as NAIA, NJCAA, NCWA and
women's division, programs were invited to battle for the national
championship in their respective divisions.
The Panthers had their hands full, taking on currently #1-ranked
University of Central Florida, followed by defending NCWA national
champions Grand Valley State University and top challengers Kansas State
University, in a two-day round robin format competition. In each meet,
the opposing coaches selected an Outstanding Wrestler of the meet, from
the opposing squad.
The first bout, against UCF, was a rough start for the club, which had
last competed December 10th at the Milwaukee Duals. UW-M started the
meet forfeiting the 125-lb. weight class, as freshman Tom Hansen
recently underwent surgery after a season-ending ankle injury. The
Panthers were unable to pull off any victories in the meet, though club
founder Gabriel Wahhab was selected Outstanding Wrestler of the UW-M
squad, for his close loss at 149 lbs.
After a short recovery period, the Panthers faced GVSU in another
high-scoring meet. At 174 lbs., Arturo Martinez, Jr. stepped up his
intensity in a match that ended with his winning by an injury default.
Heavyweight Brady Hundt also scored team points, with a forfeit, ending
the first day of competition for the Panthers. Martinez was UW-M's
Outstanding Wrestler of the meet.
The Panthers re-grouped with an inspirational visit to the newly opened
Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum
(www.wrestlingmuseum.org). Following the second-day weigh-in, the
UW-Milwaukee wrestlers were ready to validate their National Duals trip,
against a tough Kansas State club. Club officer Nicholas Tadeo got
things started at 133 lbs., quickly finishing up an attack and setting
up a spladle his opponent did not see coming, to gain a pin in just
1:32. Freshman Terrance Welch also increased his intensity, controlling
the action and finishing with a 7-4 decision that earned him the final
OW award. Wahhab earned a forfeit, as did club officer Sean Lueck at 157
lbs. Freshman Mike Huth showed potential with a tenacity that netted him
the first takedown of the match; unfortunately, an opportune countermove
by his opponent ended the match early. Martinez (174 lbs.) earned his
second victory of the tournament by forfeit. Club President Darin
Kwilinski fought
to save team points for the team by moving up a weight class but was
overtaken by NCWA All-American, and eventual OW of the NCWA division of
the tournament, Steve Kern. Brady Hundt gained another victory, by fall,
after working hard to create an opportunity to attack, which he seized
and maximized.
The Panthers, many of whom moved up a weight class or two for the dual
meets, to avoid giving up forfeits, will be in full force, at their
competitive weight classes, this coming weekend, as they return to the
Florida Classic, hosted by the University of Florida, in Gainesville.

National Contenders UW-M Panthers Win 2nd Annual Milwaukee Duals 12/10/06
-Milwaukee, WI
The Wrestling Club at UW-Milwaukee played host this weekend to Northland Baptist Bible
College and the recently approved UW-Madison Wrestling Club, at the 2nd Annual Milwaukee
Duals, the unofficial NCWA dual meet state championships. The round robin meet, held at
Riverside University High School, was a good measuring stick for all three clubs, as
they faced their first NCWA competition of the season. The Panthers seized the
opportunity to use its early season experience to the team's advantage, keeping their
opponents on the defense for most of the day.
Several Panther wrestlers scored their first wins of the season with dominance. After
attacking with impressive speed, Freshman Terrance Welch (141 lbs.) pinned both
opponents, with times of 3:12 and 3:38. Fellow freshman Mike Huth (165 lbs.) also
got his first win by way of pin, in just 2:34, after taking a forfeit in the first
match. Freshman Tom Hansen (125 lbs.) went 2-0 on the day as well, with a solid 6-1
victory over Scott San Filippo of UW-Madison and a forfeit.
Several sophomores also showed intensity, including Tanner Vanden Heuvel (197 lbs.),
who scored two pins, including one in just 26 seconds, despite wrestling up a weight
class. Young team leader Nicholas Tadeo filled a gap in the line-up by moving up two
weight classes, to 149 lbs., for the day, and was spectacular, with a pin in 1:32 and
a 19-2 technical fall. Jeremy Gee scored his first victory of the season, with a 17-1
victory against NBBC. Sean Lueck, up a weight class, at 157 lbs., gained a decisive 22-5
tech fall against NBBC but was overcome by UW-Madison standout Dan Rivers. Club
President Darin Kwilinski (174 lbs.) moved up a weight class for the dual meet and
was challenged by team leaders Aaron Scott of NBBC and John Wahhab of UW-Madison in
close decisions. Heavyweight Brady Hundt hit the mats for his first meet, gaining a
forfeit but coming up short against Jeff Schuttenhelm of UW-Madison.
Along with the powerful Rivers at 157 lbs., UW-Madison's Kyle West (184 lbs.) and
Jeff Schuttenhelm (285 lbs.) also went undefeated. Northland Baptist's team leader,
returning NCWA National Qualifier Aaron Scott (174 lbs.) went 2-0 on the day. Teammate
Josh Trygstad (149 lbs.) also showed promise with aggressive upper body attacks.
The UW-Milwaukee Wrestling Club will be vying for a national dual meet championship,
in its next competition, as the club has just been added to the line-up for the
NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, January 13th and 14th, at the University of
Northern Iowa. The Panthers will be competing in a round robin format against
three of the other top NCWA teams, while teams from Divisions I, II, III, NAIA,
NJCAA and Women will all be facing their top rivals at this premier national event.

UW-Milwaukee Opens Season at Pointer Open
November 11, 2006 – Stevens Point, WI
A young Panther squad tested its claws against the competition, in the
opening meet of the UW-Milwaukee wrestling season. Several starters
missed the Pointer Open due to injury, but the club brought eight
wrestlers to the 19-team tournament. Five wrestlers competed in the
Silver division, for first-year college wrestlers, including Tom Hansen,
Alex Mor, Mike Huth, Dan Wesley, and Tanner Vanden Heuvel. The remaining
club members competed in the Gold division, for those with previous
college experience, including Nick Tadeo, who finished top 8 at last
season’s NCWA Nationals, Darin Kwilinski, also an NCWA national
qualifier, and Panther newcomer Jeremy Gee.
Competition was fierce. Although all 8 wrestlers wrestled well, overall
the opposition was quicker on the attack, leaving the Panthers working
defense most of the day. Alex Mor scored the first wins and the first
pin of the season for the club, finishing just out of the top 6, losing
to eventual place-winner Anthony Azarian. The Panthers will take
motivation from today’s setback to the mats next weekend at the
Concordia Open (Mequon, WI).
